Ok, ok, so last issue we enthused about the early spring weather and clearly we jinxed it! The mini heatwave that was promised didn’t materialise (or if it did, it certainly didn’t live up to our definition of a heatwave). So even though we write this in the more traditional damp and grey British summer weather, we’re determined to break out the pretty nail polish and fake tan as soon as we get this issue off to print.

With the long school break looming, there’s loads to do in the area, so check out our listing of some of the great holiday camps on offer as well as all the activities available to keep the little darlings entertained. And as an added bonus, don’t miss our great ideas for rainy day play on page 12 – it seems you’re going to need them.

Happy holidays and safe travels!

New nursery and pre-school staff will be required to undertake paediatric first aid for the first time, thanks to new government proposals.

The new proposals will mean that newly qualified staff with a childcare Level 2 and 3 qualification must have an emergency paediatric first aid or full paediatric first certificate – a lifesaving change which will add approximately 15,000 additional trained early years professionals to our nurseries and pre-schools every year. There will also be a new deal in place to help Early Years providers to buy life-saving defibrillator machines at a reduced price. The plans have received the support of parents Joanne and Dan Thompson, who have

Compulsory first aidbeen campaigning for the change following the tragic death of their daughter Millie at nursery in October 2012. Their important campaign culminated in an e-petition signed by over 103,000 people. Sam Gyimah, Childcare and Education Minister: ‘‘These proposals mean that thousands more staff will be able to respond to emergencies more quickly, making sure parents really can access the very best possible childcare choices for their families. Not only will this help ensure children are safe while they learn, grow and develop but it will also raise the quality and skills of the Early Years workforce to help them deal with day to day first aid issues such as allergies and knowing when to call parents.”

Over 30,000 people have signed a petition by the British Heart Foundation to ban junk food adverts before the 9pm watershed, as new statistics show that the majority of UK parents believe stopping children being exposed to junk food adverts will help prevent obesity.

Around 30% of children in the UK are overweight or obese, increasing their risk of

Cut out obesitybeing overweight as an adult and developing coronary heart disease in later life. Yet loopholes in the UK regulatory system mean that junk food adverts which are banned during children’s programming can still be shown during family programming, such as X-Factor, when children’s TV viewing peaks. ‘By protecting young people against the sophisticated marketing techniques of junk food advertisers we can help tackle the obesity crisis which threatens the heart health of future generations,’ said Mike Hobday, Director of Policy at the British Heart Foundation. ‘We urge the UK Government to heed the public’s clear all and take immediate action.’

Holiday camps

Research shows that many children make steady progress in their reading throughout the school year and then go backwards during the long summer holidays.

The consequences are cumulative and long lasting, often having a powerful influence on reading ability throughout school life and beyond. Whilst summer holidays should be remembered for beaches, camping and chilling out, it is important to keep children reading. Here are a few fun favourites of Reading Chest to keep your children reading this summer:1. Fishing for Sounds: Using a permanent

marker, write letter sounds onto cut out plastic fish or ducks and let them swim in your paddling pool. Scoop them out with a net and use the sounds to play games e.g. make words beginning with the sound / ending with the sound / invent silly rhymes etc.

2. Shaving Foam: Get messy outside with shaving foam on a table. Have fun practising writing letter sounds with your

finger in the foam. If you want to get really messy – add a little paint!

3. Get into Top Trumps: Top Trumps is becoming more and more popular in schools as it delivers a range of educational benefits through ‘camouflaged learning’. As well as being great fun, it improves literacy, numeracy and subject knowledge. The card games are perfect for taking away on holiday. www.toptrumps.com

4. Get children cooking: Everything involved in cooking is fantastic for children’s learning, from reading the recipe and weighing ingredients, to sharing cakes with friends. This can be made into a more social event with friends by recreating programmes such as ‘Come Dine with Me’ or ‘MasterChef’ with friends, where children have to read and write their own menus too.

5. Listen to audio books: Audio books are a brilliant way to keep children’s interest in stories alive. Long car journeys are a great place for a captive audience! These can either be bought as CDs or downloaded from websites such as www.audible.co.uk.

You can join readingchest.co.uk to receive regular deliveries of books at your child’s chosen reading level delivered to your door. Members also get reward charts, certificates and write book reviews online.

Holiday camps

Summer holidays are a perfect time for kids to get creative and build a shelter or den.

Whether it’s a sheet between two clothes-airers, tablecloth over the back of the sofa or a rug over a rope between two trees, it’s a great way to encourage kids to work together and get inventive in creating a fun space to play. In fine weather why not sleep out in your den and experience the sights and sounds of night-time.

Kids and adults alike will love riding the thrilling activities in the Snow Park; enjoying the bumps of the Downhill Donuts, racing on Sledge ‘O’ Mania and whizzing down the Luge Slip ‘N’ Slide. For under 4’s, the new Mini Moose Arctic Adventure is the perfect place to explore!

Let your kids rock out this summerEvery parent knows just how difficult it can be to fill those long weeks of school holidays with exciting things to keep your teens and tweens engaged and smiling.

Well… if your kids are budding musicians, then BIMM Manchester’s got the perfect solution!

They’re running a five day long music Summer School from Monday 27 to Friday 31 July for guitarists, bassists, drummers and singers aged 11+ who are looking to develop their technique and confidence as live performers.

Powered by MusicRadar, the course has been specifically developed for those who love classic indie rock and pop, and students will strut their stuff to artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Attendees will have access to first-class music facilities with dedicated tuition and guidance from expert BIMM tutors, including Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller, The Who), Kieron Pepper (The Prodigy), James Hester (Malakai), Elliot May (Basement Jaxx) and Martin Wright (Slash, Ronnie Wood).

Students will also get direct input from different music industry guests

each day, with past visitors including Ben Thompson (Two Door Cinema Club drummer), Ace (Skunk Anansie guitarist), Adam Pitts (Lawson drummer) and vocalist Liela Moss of The Duke Spirit.

On day five, students will form bands and perform their favourite track of the week in front of family and friends. Plus they’ll have the chance to win a whole host of goodies and giveaways, such as guitars, amps, gig tickets and more, courtesy of the best brands in the music biz.

Courses are only £299 and open to musicians aged 11+ who are not absolute beginners.

to pass the time. No one in the Butters household will ever forget the day a game of Battleships descended into an actual World War. And if I’m to be honest, I’ve never quite got over being beaten by my children at Scrabble after they came up with ‘zumba’ on a triple word score. However this is a chance to encourage your family to forget the iPads and Xboxes of today and remember the fun you can have with three dimensional people.Take a dipIf the summer showers won’t allow you to get dry, grab your swimsuit and head to your local leisure centre. News that half of primary school children can’t swim the length of a pool should be a wakeup call for all parents. Many local swim schools offer intense holiday courses for children looking to master

this life saving skill and you can support them with a rainy day trip to your local pool. This time of year provides the perfect opportunity to make swimming fun and get the whole family summer holiday ready.Keep learning aliveSix weeks is a long time to be out of the classroom. Make a note of the days your local after school support centre is running holiday sessions. For example, Explore Learning is open daily over the school holidays and offers a range of learning opportunities for children from 4 years old. Keeping them occupied on a rainy day during the summer may give your child a head start once they’re back at their desk in September.Create a rainy day jarHas your child ever asked to do something that you’ve not had the

time for? Maybe it’s baking a batch of biscuits, building some Lego they’ve had since their birthday or showing you a dance routine they’ve created. Whenever time is against you, get your child to write the idea on a piece of paper and pop it in the Rainy Day Jar. It means you can reach into it for ideas as soon as you hear the words ‘’It’s raining!”Head indoorsYour local museum is rain proof and packed with family activities to keep you all occupied. The summer holiday is a time for the attractions on your doorstep to put out the welcome mat for families. Take a look at our What’s On guide to find out what’s happening near you and make a note so that when that typical British summer does arrive, you know where to head.
