School’s out for Summer!Holiday camps, clubs and loads of stuff to do

GIVE US AN S!

GIVE US A U!

GIVE US AN M!.....well you get the picture. Yes, we’re pretty excited about summer – and yet again we live in hope that this year will be the scorcher we’ve been waiting for. Certainly, at the time of writing this, it’s the hottest it’s been so far – but we’ve been stuck indoors researching Holiday Camps and Summer What’s on! That’ll teach us to leave everything to the last minute.

But we’re hoping we’ll soon be able to put our prettily painted toenails on display, while we relax and sip something icy cold, complaining about the heat.

Wishing you all a great, sunshiney season and safe travels wherever you go.

Till September,

Stuck for entertainment ideas this summer? Here’s a selection of some of the great summer holiday camps and courses on offer in the area…

School’s Out is providing over 6 weeks (17 July – 2 September) of outstanding Holiday Club childcare this summer for children ages 3 – 14, with lots of imaginative activities planned around inventive weekly themes: Up, Up and Away, Circus in Town, World of Craft, Black and White, Animal Mania and Greenfingers Week.

There are optional trips and workshops each week (as well as daily adult led activities) so children of all ages are engaged and enjoying themselves. These include various sports sessions (all run by Shooting Stars), trips to Chester

Zoo, a Climbing Wall, Bean & Brush Art Café and Jodrell Bank.

Back at base there’ll be a visit from Zoo Lab where children can get up close with a variety of different animals, Bouncy Castles and plenty of parties. For the Year 5+ children who are too cool for school, there is even a separate Chill Out Zone! And don’t forget the Xbox Ones and iPads! Thurs 17 – Fri 25 July: Altrincham Preparatory (8am – 6.30pm)Mon 28 July – Tues 2 Sept: Bollin Primary, Bowden (7.45am – 6.30pm)Mon 28 July – Fri 29 Aug: Cloverlea Primary, Timperley (7.45am – 6pm)For more info, go to www.schoolsoutgroup.co.uk

School’s Out Summer 2014 Holiday Clubs

Sam, who runs Enjoy-a-Ball, says: ‘Every day of the camp is action packed with energetic activities, games, arts and crafts, treasure hunts, stories, free play and much, much more.

It’s a great opportunity for children to make friends and burn off energy; the sessions fly by!’One 6 year old boy, when asked if he had a good time at camp said “Enjoy-a-Ball Camp was not good, Mummy... It was AWESOME!!”This year, Enjoy-a-Ball’s Summer Camp runs from 9am – 1pm on Mon 21 – Fri 25 July at Brookburn Primary School, Chorlton, and is for boys and girls aged 4 – 9. Places are limited so early booking is advised. You can complete an online booking form or contact Sam on [email protected] 886783 / www.enjoy-a-ball.com

Enjoy-a-Ball Camps are Chorlton’s holiday hit!

Based at St Ambrose Prep School in Hale Barns, OK Mum has been providing flexible, quality, out-of-school childcare for children aged 3 – 14 for over 20 years.

The dedicated team of child carers – most of whom have been part of the club for 15 years or more – pride themselves on providing a friendly, warm and inviting “home-from-home” environment. This year, their Holiday Club runs from Monday 14 July right through until September, and is open 7.45am – 6.30pm, with full or half days available.

Children have use of the school’s

extensive outdoor facilities, including school fields, running tracks, football and cricket pitches, climbing frames with rope ladders and balancing beams. There are also two playgrounds and outdoor picnic areas.

On rainy days, they make use of the sports hall as well as rooms for quieter activities, arts & crafts, dressing up, etc.

Electronic games are available, but time on these is limited, with children encouraged to interact and join in other activities. And if that’s not enough, they also organise trips – The Crocky Trail, Manley Mere, Blackpool Pleasure

OK Mum is more than just OK!

Beach and Ice Skating are just a few of the outings they’ve done over the years.

Breakfast, a mid morning snack and lunches are all provided, and parents who currently use them can’t recommend them highly enough!

Their Breakfast and After School Clubs are really popular, so if you want to book a place for September 2014, you really should call them now – they currently collect from 16 schools in the area for their After School Club!

RNCM Young Strings provides children of 5 – 11 years with musical training and tuition on a stringed instrument.

Their integrated approach, which uses Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Kodàly, ensemble training and group instrumental teaching, aims to nurture a love of music and to inspire children to work to their full potential on their chosen instrument. All Young Strings tutors are experts in their field and are highly experienced at working with young children. The emphasis in

Is your child a budding musician?

classes is on learning through fun group music-making, games and exercises, all of which help the children to develop excellent musical and technical skills. The first year of the programme, aimed at 5 year olds, is a foundation year, in which children begin to develop key musical skills, without the technical and physical obstacles that can be presented by an instrument. From their second year, children receive a small group lesson on their chosen instrument and an ensemble class, in addition to continuing their musicianship training.

Children attend weekly classes from 4.30 – 6.30pm on Wednesdays or Thursdays during term time. Foundation year classes finish at 5.50pm. There is no audition process. Young Strings is an open access programme. For more details please see www.rncm.ac.uk/about/in-the-community/young-projects/rncm-young-strings.

To perform at your best in any situation, whether at a sports event or in an exam like the 11-plus it’s really important to do two things. The first is to prepare by practising. The second is to be in the right frame of mind.

Unfortunately exams make us stressed and the expectation around this exam in particular can be quite hard on such young children. Will they get to go to the best school? Will they get to go with their friends? Many parents buy in additional coaching for their children but to date there has been little to help children understand and cope with the stress of it all.

To address this issue, Dr Lucy Russell, the lead clinical psychologist at Everlief Child Psychology has written Thinkerbud, an online course for children preparing for their 11-plus.

There is some recent published evidence to support initiatives like Thinkerbud. Researchers at the University of New Orleans presented a group-administered, test-anxiety-reduction intervention including relaxation techniques to 325 eight to

Is your child getting stressed about the 11-plus?

17-year-olds, all of whom were found to be experiencing higher than usual levels

of exam stress. By reducing exam anxiety the researches also observed reductions in symptoms of anxiety disorders, depression and lack of control.

So how does Thinkerbud work? When you have registered on the Thinkerbud website, your child is

guided through a course by “Bud” which takes around an hour. Thinkerbud

will teach your child about stress, how it affects people and what you can do about it. It will also work with your child to build their own action plan which they can print at the end.

The course is designed to be taken by your child but of course you could take part with them which might be a good way to help them learn. Thinkerbud can be found at www.thinkerbud.com and costs £25.

Over 50% of state grammar schools are planning serious changes to their admissions policies in order to attract pupils from more disadvantaged backgrounds, according to the Grammar School Heads Association.

30 of the country’s 164 selective schools have already agreed the move, with another 58 planning to do so shortly, following a report from education charity the Sutton Trust which

Grammar school shake-upsaid that grammar schools were being monopolised by students from wealthier homes. Michael Wilshaw, chief schools inspector, said they were ‘stuffed full’ of middle class children and so failed to improve social mobility. Under these new changes many grammar schools will reserve places specifically for pupils from poorer homes who pass the 11-plus. Barry Sindall, chief executive of the GSHA, added that the new admissions rules would not mean a reduction in the number of places for children from better off homes. These changes follow on from Schools Minister David Laws revealing that the Government is involved in talks with grammar school heads to make 11-plus tests less ‘coachable’, to avoid middle class parents gaining an advantage through being able to afford private tutoring.

Tried and tested – Kozi KidzWe recently tested the Vind Fleece from Kozi Kidz for those Summer days with bit of a breeze.

More than just a sweatshirt as a cover up, this fleece has a windproof membrane and is water resistant in a light Summer shower. Logan (age 4) put the Vind Fleece to the test on several family trips out, from dog walks and bike rides to country shows. He loves this fleece; it zips right up to the chin with a high neck, covers hands with the thumb holes cut into the cuffs and comes right down over his bottom at the back with the clever cut to avoid chilly

draughts. It isn’t bulky at all so he’s free to move and play with ease. As a mum I love it too, it washes well and dries quickly. I also love the reflective spots along the back and piping on the sleeves. If I ask Logan to grab a fleece on the way out of the door this is the one he will pick from the drawer.

For Logan’s 4th birthday party I wanted an activity that would really engage him, as at ‘traditional’ parties he loses focus on the games and just runs around. I also wanted something that would feel very much like a boys party but that his sisters and other girls attending would enjoy too. I think I found the perfect thing – Kids Go Karting in Stockport.

Kids Go Karting aim their parties at ages 3 – 10 years old. The electric karts are so simple to drive – just one pedal and steer – so even the youngest children were straight in and driving around. The party guests were split into teams of four, each team having three turns on the karts and the top driver from each team getting back on again for a final race, so all the kids had plenty of driving time. When not driving there was still plenty of other stuff to do.… air hockey, a mini climbing wall, Wii games and colouring in.

After the final race, the kids sat down to a lovely spread of food supplied by Kids Go

We are delighted to announce Families Online is now much easier than ever to use. Our fresh re-branding expresses our aim to cover all things ‘families’, as well as offering ‘endless ideas for families’.

Kart-tastic!

Karting before Logan was presented with an amazing Kart cake. With candles blown out it was then time for his lap of honour while his guests cheered him on which he loved!

To round off the party, all children were presented with a special Kids Go Karting driving licence and Logan even got a medal.

I’m thrilled with how successful the party was; all children taking part really got involved and had a brilliant time. The birthday boy was certainly made to feel very grown up and special. As a busy parent it was the perfect easy solution for me as everything was taken care of – entertainment, catering, cake, party bags… all I had to do was fill in the invitations which I printed off the website – a real hassle free option.

WIN a Vtriker Elite Tri-Scooter* worth £69.99

©UKayed. All rights reserved

We were very excited to try out the new Vtriker Elite – especially me, as I can’t quite build up the confidence to rollerblade with the kids around the neighbourhood since my first (and last) embarrassing attempt. So being fairly stable, having a bit of a lower body workout and looking like a cooler, younger version of the mum I really am was pretty appealing.

It’s far more than just another scooter – its unique design just lets you use a scissor action, pushing your feet together and apart to propel yourself forward. It has two handle powered brakes so that you can control the speed on the rear wheels, and the scissor action means there are some great moves you can try to master. It’s also got an easy to use Quick Lock system so you can fold it down for transporting and is available in four different colours - Black, Pink, Blue and Green. We gave it a whirl in the quiet close next to our house and were very impressed. Both Declan (15) and Ben (8) loved it and I had to pull rank to have a go. It’s suitable for children age 5+, and as it can hold up to 80kg of weight, I know they’re not going to outgrow it quickly. I can see we’re going to have to get a second one to avoid a family war.

We’ve got one of these fabulous new Vtriker Elite’s to give away to a lucky Families reader! Simply go to www.familiesmanchester.co.uk to enter now. Entries close Thurs 31 July. Good luck! For more information go to www.vtriker.com *Colour selected randomly

Summer

1. Go wild swimming: swimming in a pond or lake, or in the sea, is a very different experience from an indoor pool

2. Build a den: whether you do this indoors or in the garden, or out in the woods or on the beach, you’ll have loads of fun.

3. Go fruit picking: not only will you have a good time, you’ll also be setting up your next family project - making jam!

4. Sleep under canvas: for families that haven’t camped before, even one night away, or even in the back garden, can be a huge adventure.

5. Cook on a campfire: this is a perfect add-on to your camping adventure. Get advice online about how to build your fire and what foods are best to cook on it.

Ping! Time to unplug and reconnect with your familyJoanna Moorhead has some ideas on how to do it

6. Go on a long bike ride: if you’ve all got your own bikes you probably do this all the time. If not, it can be a really fabulous and different day out to hire bikes and follow a cycle trail.

7. Play a board game: a game like Monopoly or Cluedo, which children can play from a young age or can play in teams, is a genuinely bonding experience.

8. Reorganise your family photographs: online galleries can be a great way of sharing pictures with relatives and friends – but there’s a huge amount of fun to be had from creating an old fashioned album together.

9. Borrow a dog for a weekend: if you’re not a dog-owning family, having one on loan for a few days can be a hugely rewarding experience. See www.borrowmydoggy.com

10. Climb a big hill: this can be a mountain or a fairly small hill, depending on how old your children are.

11. Go fishing: you can do this with a net in the rock pools at the beach, or in a stream or river inland.

12. Have a snail race: find some snails, and set up the course; place bets on which snail will win, and watch the action unfold.

13. Go star-gazing: do some research beforehand, and when you get a clear evening, head off in to a space where the sky is open in search of the North Pole, Saturn and the Plough.

14. Hunt for treasure or bones: beaches can be great places for this, or look online to see if there are any ‘treasure troves’ near you (eg if you’re in London, mudraking on the banks of the Thames has plenty of potential).

15. Go geocaching: ok, so this is one activity you will need your mobile phone for. But the high-tech treasure hunt is fascinating, and it pulls all members of the family in. Try it! More information at www.geocaching.com

16. Switch roles in the kitchen: if you’re usually the meal-maker, and the children are usually the table-setters, do things the other way round.

17. Have a family talent show: this is a good one when you have another family or relatives visiting. Everyone has to do a turn; no wriggling out allowed, however shy the mums and dads are.

18. Make a family journal or scrap book: this can be a good project for a family holiday or a school holiday. Like a talent show, everyone needs to contribute something – a review of a local pub, an accounts of a day out, or a book review.

19. Fly a kite: they’re cheap and easy to buy, or you can even make your own. Read up on tips about how to fly them at www.thekitesociety.org.

20. Go birdwatching: you don’t need to know anything about birds to enjoy watching them, but if you go to a birdwatching sanctuary or wetlands centre you’ll learn loads. For more information see www.wwt.org.uk

Summer is a great time to enjoy being together with your nearest and dearest. But for many families these days, even together time is dominated by mobiles phones, iPads, TV and other devices. According to a recent survey, though, even kids themselves recognise the need to unplug and welcome the chance to ‘do something different’. Here are our top 20 ideas for what that ‘something different’ might be.
