VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT

Away Meets: 1 timing shift at each meet per family per day that your swimmer competes

Child Swims=Parent Times

Home Meet October 21st-22nd: Timing shifts

Board of directors opportunity:We are looking for a new board member for our fundraising chair. Have your voice heard, make an impact, and be an integral part of this organization. Serving as RST Board Member automatically credits your family with their volunteer commitment hours!

Fundraising committee help opportunity: We also need 2 additional volunteers to help our fundraising chair.

Please email Ismara at [email protected] if you are interested in either position. This is a huge gap in our organization that we need filled. Fundraising will help us pay for 50,000+ in pool rental feeds, $150,000+ in coaching expenses, and insurance costs of over $20,000. Monthly dues do not cover all of these expenses. In order for us to continue to grow and succeed while keeping costs competitive as a non profit organization we need you!

USA SWIMMING VS. REC SWIMMING➔ Year Around (Most swimmers get a three week

break in August and a week break for Christmas)

➔ 1-2 swim meets per month

➔ Swim meets are 2-4 days long

➔ Swimmers must be registered through USA swimming. This can be done through www.swim-smarter.com.

➔ Teams are part of local swimming committees (LSC) that typically have 50 to 200 teams in them.

➔ Swim coaches must be registered through USA swimming and go through a variety of testing and certifications.

➔ Seasonal April thru July (extra clinics Sep-Jan & Mar to extend season)

➔ Swim meets are weekly or biweekly

➔ Swim meets are 1-2 days long

➔ Teams are part of leagues which typically have 8 to 10 teams in them

➔ Athletes are offered 6 events per meet and can swim 3 of those events.

Page 12: FALL & WINTER TEAM Meeting SCY 2017-2018 (1)...Microsoft PowerPoint - FALL & WINTER TEAM Meeting SCY 2017-2018 (1) Author: Patricia Created Date: 10/12/2017 4:32:00 PM ...

SHORT TERM VS.LONG TERM DEVELOPMENTShort term approach:➔ Focus is on immediate results➔ Swimmers are often training too much at a young

age. ➔ Coaches and parents expect swimmers to get

best times at every meet. ➔ Technique is often sacrificed for increased

yardage and speed.➔ Swimmers often specialize in a few strokes and

events before college.➔ Swimmers typically do not play other sports.➔ Swimmers often peak at a young age only to burn

out and quit.

Long term approach :➔ Focus is to create well rounded

swimmers that can be successful in multiple strokes and events

➔ Coaches and parents understand that swimmers will not get best times every meet.

➔ Some meets are used purely for training purposes to to experiment with different racing strategies.

➔ Swimmers are tapered 2-3 times per year for high level championship meets.

➔ Swimmers usually play other sports up to age 13.

➔ Technique supersedes training.➔ Strength training progresses with

swimmer’s body.
