Women of Hope ConferenceMarch 4 & 5, 2016

To Register: www.hhi.org/womenofhope

Overflowing HopeTo every woman of Hope, This year has been full of celebrations, sorrows, challenges, and growth. When the theme for this year’s conference was determined, there was no way we could understand how timely this message would be. Our theme verse is Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” We invite you to join us for our annual women’s conference in Murfreesboro, TN on March 4 & 5, 2016 at the Embassy Suites.

Make it a girls’ trip and stay at the hotel! If you put four people in a room, it comes out to about $39/person/night and it includes a delicious hot breakfast! We will again offer a wonderful lunch at an additional cost. This year we are hosting three NEW Friday morning class/workshops from 9-11 am. Start the weekend off early and enjoy the Murfreesboro area in the afternoon before the evening sessions. We look forward to seeing you there! May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in Him.

If you have questions, please call Jana Owen at 615-832-2000 or email her at [email protected].

18 year old Sarah Bullock of Las Vegas, Nevada dreamed of making a tangible contribution toward eradicating cholera in the world. After researching the topic as part of earning a Gold Award from the Girl Scouts (equivalent to an Eagle Scout Award), she discovered that the country of Haiti has been severely affected by cholera, and unclean drinking water is a major factor in the spread of this preventable disease.

“These innocent people drink contaminated water and it is slowly killing them,” Sarah says. “I knew I had to do something, so I raised the funds to build a clean water well in Haiti.” Through several garage sales, selling Haiti20 T-shirts, and asking friends and family for donations, Sarah raised the funds to drill a well. “I decided to work with Healing Hands International because they were so welcoming and so attentive to completing this project. They made me feel

like I built this water well and I was a part of the whole process. They made my dream to help others come true by working with me to provide clean water.” Sarah says, “I just kept telling myself, it only takes one person to change the world and that person could be me. It is so much more rewarding

to help others than to be focused on yourself.” She encourages others who want to make a difference to “Get out there and change the world!” Thank you Sarah for being such an inspiration! If you would like to learn more about the clean water program at HHI, please contact Lara Jenkins at [email protected].

Teen Takes Action in Haiti

In October, Dr. Bobbie Solley took a group of teachers with her to Haiti to work in the schools and conduct the fourth Education Seminar for teachers in the Port-au-Prince area. The participation we experienced was amazing. All four directors along with six-eight teachers from each school were present. “The buy-in from school directors is vital,” said Dr. Solley and she added, “Teachers are much more likely to modify their teaching if the directors are behind the change.” God has answered every prayer preceding this year’s conference. We prayed for a Haitian teacher to rise up and lead other Haitian teachers. She did in the person of Madeline Joseph. We prayed God would prepare the Haitian teachers’ hearts to perceive Madeline as a leader. They did. And we prayed that Madeline would take her role as leader to heart and take charge of teaching and modeling. She did.

“God’s timing is perfect in everything he does. He has been at work in Haiti in the lives of teachers and directors for the three and a half years I have been there.” After 21 visits to Haiti, working and directing, teaching and modeling, Dr. Solley added, “The week we spent in October going into all four schools and ending with the seminar could not have been more perfect. God has shown us what is possible when we trust in him and abide in his teachings.”

HHI would like supporters to know that the education work in Haiti will continue in spite of the untimely death of Roberta Edwards (See page 7). How it will continue and what it might look like is still to be determined. If you have questions about the Education Ministry, please contact Bobbie Solley at [email protected].

Your response to our article in the last newsletter about empowering girls in Ghana has been truly

amazing! In three short months, we have raised $3,000 to send fifteen of Elizabeth’s girls to school.

Healing Hands International has had the pleasure of being involved with the school for two years now, and we look forward to even more involvement. If you would like to

participate in this project, we are still accepting gifts. The cost to support one girl for one year in Elizabeth’s trade school is $200. This includes all food, uniforms, and supplies for the school year. Stay tuned for updates as they become available! If you would like to support a Ghanaian girl or if you have questions, please contact Lydia Steger at 615-832-2000 or email her at [email protected].

“Ready for Business” in BajaThis fall, we partnered with Baja Missions to spend a week in Mexico to work with women in multiple churches teaching basic business practices for Christian women. Mexico is the fourth location for HHI to host business conferences for women. Other locations have included: Haiti, India, and Mozambique.

Many of the Mexican women had already started or were planning to start their own small businesses to help support their families. Others came up with new ideas.

Cleotilde, pictured below in blue says, “Before this conference, I had tried to think about starting something on my own, but I was too scared and timid. Now I feel confident and ready for business!” Pilar Natera of Baja Missions, pictured below in grey added, “This conference is so good for the women here! They’ve never been taught some of these basic business principals.”

Jana Owen, Director of Women’s Ministries at HHI says, “This business conference is so important! Our role is to start the conversation between women in the community about business and provide tools and resources. In most cases, there are already experienced business women in the church who just need a platform to share their expertise.” Over the course of two conferences during the week in Mexico, HHI began this conversation for over 50 women. We are eager to see what God has in store for these women and their new business ventures!

If you have questions or would like to support Women Worth a Million, please contact Jana Owen at [email protected].

“Now I feel confident and ready!”

Tribute to Roberta Edwards, 1960-2015Roberta Edwards. Partner. Servant. Friend. These are words that describe Roberta as she assisted in the work of Healing Hands in Haiti. Prior to her untimely passing, Roberta had many passions, the most important being the children of Haiti. She fostered them at her home and directed a daily feeding program for street children. In addition to taking care of so many children, she managed to successfully coordinate a host of other efforts.

HHI’s relationship with Roberta began after the 2010 earthquake. She served as the focal point for all relief distribution in the weeks, months, and years after the earth-quake. “Had it not been for Roberta, HHI’s major relief effort would have never happened successfully,” says Vice President, Chris Gingles.

In 2012, Bobbie Solley began the education work in Haiti. Roberta believed in this work stating, “The only way to change the culture of Haiti is through education.” She worked tirelessly to assist in that work and her belief in the value of education never wavered. Her support for the education work in Haiti will be missed.

Roberta also had a passion for women. When approached by Healing Hands to become part of the Women Worth A Million program, Roberta didn’t hesitate. In July 2013, the first Christian Business Women’s conference was held at Roberta’s pavilion for over 100 women. As a result of the conference, many started their own businesses and are now able to send their children to school.

“I don’t think anyone will ever know all the things Roberta was doing in Haiti,” says Bobbie Solley, Director of Education. Roberta Edwards, friend to Healing Hands for many years, will be missed. If you would like to contribute to the Education or Women

Worth A Million program in Haiti, please send your check to Healing Hands International. All other contributions toward Roberta’s work should be sent to:
