“There are special times that we eachlike to do things on our own, but we stillhave lots of activities that we enjoy doingtogether. He enjoys playing baseball and Ienjoy going to the games and watchinghim,” she said.

“Also, I think we have enough trust ineach other that allows us to have special

Four Teche Area couples cele-brating 50 and 70 years ofmarriage agree a successfulmarriage doesn’t justhappen.

It is built on respect, love, compatibility, trust, communication and a strong faith. It is about sharing dreams and fears andworking together as a team to deal withcrisis and adversity.

It is about having fun and laughingtogether.

With 220 years of combined maritalexperience between Iona and Thomas H.Rochon, Judy and Edward AnthonyDauterive III, Bernice and Ronald Grayand Margaret and Robert Trahan, newly-wed couples may want to take note oftheir advice to a long and successful rela-tionship that has led to a life fulfilled withjoy.

Iona and Thomas RochonWhen Iona Pellerin Rochon and

Thomas H. Rochon first laid eyes on eachother, they knew they had found the rightperson to share their life with for theirremaining years.

She was only 17 years old and he was 19when they exchanged wedding vows. Each never doubted that they would havea strong marriage and be able to grow oldtogether to enjoy life to the fullest.

The New Iberia couple celebrated their70th wedding anniversary on June 11.Those 70 years resulted in nine children, three of which are deceased, 14 grand-children, 21 great-grandchildren and twogreat-great-grandchildren.

“We went together exactly two years, six months and 10 days before we weremarried, but we knew we were rightfor each other.

I guess you can say I did a pretty goodjob of picking out a wife. The proof is inthe pudding,” he said.

“My thought was that this is going to befor a lifetime. At that time people resolvedßtheir problems and stayed married

longer.”Iona Rochon said she knew immediate-

ly she had found the perfect husband withwhich to share her life.

“We’ve always had respect for oneanother and that is important in a mar-riage. You just need to make sure there islots of love between you before making acommitment.”

Thomas Rochon said every marriagehas rough times and couples often facefinancial problems, which can lead to bigtrouble.

The Rochons said they always made it apolicy never to spend more money thanthey had on hand and to always leave afew extra dollars at the bank to preparefor an enjoyable retirement.

“The younger generation has moreopportunities than we ever did, but theyneed to remember its takes cooperationand working together as a family for asuccessful marriage,” he said.

Judy and Edward A. Dauterive IIIWhen Edward Anthony Dauterive III

tells a joke, his wife, Judy, still looks at

him adorningly and begins to giggle justas she did when they were first married50 years ago.

The New Iberia couple celebrated their50th anniversary on June 11. As the twolook back on their years of marriage. They agree trust, understanding andstrong religious faith played a big part intheir successful marriage.

“You must always remember the thingthat you loved the most about your spousewhen you first met,” said Judy TrahanDauterive. “I remember one of the firstthings that attracted me to Eddie was hissense of humor. He still makes me laughtoday at the stories he tells.”

The Dauterives said young couplesentering into marriage should be pre-pared for some rough times.

“We had a rough first year of our mar-riage and that was the hardest. In ourfirst year, we had to cope with the deathof our first child. But if anything, thatbrought us closer together because wehad to console and comfort each other,”she said.

If health allows, the Dauterives are hop-ing to have the opportunity to celebratetheir 70th anniversary.

“My maternal grandparents were ableto celebrate 72 years of marriage so thatwould be wonderful if we could do thesame. I think the word divorce was neverin my family’s vocabulary. We always hada lot of examples of love and devotion,”she said.

The Dauterives said it is important fora couple to spend time together, but it isequally important for both husband andwife to each enjoy their own passions.

“I knew when I married him he had apassion for hunting and fishing, so Iwould always let him go to the camp onweekends and I would use that time formy quiet time or to do things I enjoyed. We still never stopped doing thingstogether and with family,” she said.

As they look back over the past 50years, they consider themselves fortunateto have a good marriage which resulted

“You just have to remember that theroad to a good marriage has its peaks andvalleys,” she said.

Both agree that compromise, respect forone another and dealing with controver-sial issues by talking problems out aresome of the best tips that can be given onsucceeding in a lasting marriage.

“In all the years we’ve been married,we never raised our voices to each other.Whenever, we’ve had a controversialissue, we’ve always listened to each otherand talked it out,” he said. “I guess whenwe grew up and raised our family it was agood time. Life was a lot simpler then -those were good times.”

Bernice and Ronald GrayBernice and Ronald C. Gray celebrated

their 50th wedding anniversary on June11.

The New Iberia couple said a successful

marriage is all about picking the rightpartner, deep love, patience and under-standing each other’s needs.

“When I got married, I never thoughtthat I would be married for 50 years. Wehad a lot of ups and downs in our mar-riage, but we listened to each other andmade it work,” said Bernice Vallot Gray.

Just as many other married couples, the Grays have gone through some roughyears in their marriage but always man-aged to survive by drawing support fromeach other.

In 2000, they were faced with the deathof their son Eric Gray Sr.

“We had to turn to each other for com-fort and we did find comfort in knowingthat he left us a beautiful grandson EricGray Jr.,” she said.

Ronald Gray said marriage should beviewed as a job if it is going to be lasting.“You can’t just have a good marriage withlove alone, you have to want it to work,”he said. “ Instead of trying to solve theirproblems today, many turn to divorce as asolution.”

The couple said they worked hardthroughout the years but now they areenjoying retirement together.

“We both enjoy yard work and we really

enjoy visiting our family. There are cer-tain things that each of us like and thethings that we each dislike we try to avoid

as much as possible,” she said.Their advice to newlyweds is to never

put too much emphasis on materialthings, placing more importance on find-ing the best qualities in each other.

Both agree, a successful marriage is notjust based solely on love — the couple hasto be compatible if they expect a long andhappy marriage. In fact, the Grays are socompatible, they each coincidentallybought the same anniversary card foreach other proclaiming “50 years – a life-time of love.”

“When we gave our cards to each other, all we could do is start laughing. That’show much we think alike,” she said.

The Grays said the key to finding a per-fect partner to work along the side of forthe rest of one’s married life is to find apartner that will stop and listen.

“I’ll always remember, God said, ‘to loveone another as I have loved you.’ I’m hop-ing we can see many more years togetherwith God’s help,” she said.

Robert and Margaret TrahanMargaret and Robert Trahan know

their decision to make a lifelong commit-ment was a good one.

Fifty years later, the New Iberia couplelooks back over their life with a sense offulfillment as they prepare to celebratetheir anniversary June 25. Their liveshave been filled with plenty of love and astrong family bond with their five chil-dren, seven grandchildren and threegreat-grandchildren.

Little has changed since their first dayof marriage. They still end each nightwith prayers, a kiss and profess their lovefor one another.

“We never end the day without saying ‘Ilove you.’ It is something we have alwaysdone every night throughout the years toremind each other of our love,” saidMargaret Delcambre Trahan.

Both credit their strong Christian faithto the success of their marriage andagree a strong faith can help to keep amarriage on the right track.

“No marriage is perfect, but you have to

really want a good marriage and be will-ing to work at it,” she said. “We’ve hadour bad times and good times, but thegood times far outweigh the bad.”

The Trahans had their five childrenwithin the first 10 years of marriage sothey quickly learned the importance ofcompromise and seeking support fromeach other.

“When we were in disagreement oversomething about the children, we neverdiscussed it front of them. We alwaysshowed support for each other and waiteduntil we were alone to discuss the prob-lem,” he said. “There has to be a lot ofcompromise. It can’t be all one way.”

The Trahans said they always dideverything together.

“We never went anywhere without eachother, always finding something that wecould both enjoy,” she said.

The couple said divorce has become aneasy solution for those who won’t putforth the effort to solve their problems.

Robert Trahan said he has been blessedand there would be very little he would

want to change. “There’s only one thing— 12 children would have been betterthan five,” he said.

“I can’t wait until the day that we arethe couple giving advice after 50 years ofmarriage,” she said.

The newlyweds have already estab-lished their priorities and needs as towhat they believe will lead to a successfulmarriage.

“We believe trust and companionshipare vital in having a strong marriage.Your spouse has to be your best friend.Faith also plays a major role in our rela-tionship,” she said.

he joined us as one. Whenever the timecomes we will lovingly welcome children.I thank God every night for sending memy soul mate,” she said.

The Youngs said they already recognizethe importance of spending quality timetogether and just enjoying each other.

“Caleb’s schedule requires him to beaway for 21 days. The time away makes usreally appreciate our relationship, shesaid. During his time home, we trulyappreciate our time together and it helpsthat we enjoy the same hobbies.”

“I feel blessed that I get to spend therest of my life with my best friend,” hesaid.

Jena and Jared BabineauxJena Cantrelle of Jeanerette and Jared

Babineaux of Erath were married onJune 5.

The newlyweds are eager to begin theirnew life, and they agree with some of theadvice they have received from older cou-

ples. They are confident they will cele-brate a 50th or even 70th-year anniver-sary.

The newlyweds have known each otherfor three years and pretty much knoweach others’ likes and dislikes. “We knowwhat buttons not to push,” he said.

Both agree some time alone is impor-tant, but there should be a good balancebetween alone and together time.

“There are special times that we eachlike to do things on our own, but we stillhave lots of activities that we enjoy doingtogether. He enjoys playing baseball and Ienjoy going to the games and watchinghim,” she said.

“Also, I think we have enough trust ineach other that allows us to have special

time for ourselves.”The Babineauxs believe it is important

to keep strong family ties and alwayskeep in mind the importance of settlingtheir differences by talking through theirproblems.

“Sometimes we take a little time to cooloff and then discuss our problem,” shesaid. They try to respect each other’s in-laws and know it is important to keep astrong relationship with them.
