Shorin-Ryu-Karate This Class is conducted in a traditional dojo environment. Men and women, old and young, all train together without distinction. What an excellent activity to achieve good physical condition as well as gain an appreciation for the vulnerabilities as well as the beauty and capabilities of the human body and mind. No experience necessary.

Shorin-Ryu, Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate is rooted in the Okinawan art of “te” dating back several centuries. It is one of the original karate “styles” and the American Shorin-Ryu Federation (ASF) has worked diligently to maintain its purity since its introduction into the United States in the 1950s. All ASF dojos are non-commercial entities and do not participate in sports competitions.

Instructor Jeff Violet, 5th degree Black Belt, ASF has been practicing over twenty five years and is director of Northern California ASF dojos. He was previously the instructor at the Stanford Shorin-Ryu Karate dojo. Each student needs a solid white Gi (uniform) and white belt free of any color or markings. A “gi” can be provided at cost ($20). Testing for promotion occurs at the discretion of the instructor. Promotions reflect the ability of the student and no fees are required.
