Where the Fish Meets the RoadGreenspace and the California Conservation Corp join forces to help SLO steelheadThroughout the County of San Luis Obispo, the inter-section where creeks and streams meet the highway is acritical juncture in the life of a steelhead. This is often thepoint where adult steelhead have a hard time making itupstream to spawn and juvenile steelhead are disrupted intheir swim back to the ocean. The cumulative effect of

hundreds of these blocked streams is significant in thedestruction of this endangered species.Greenspace has been awarded a grant from theCalifornia Department of Fish and Game to manage the evuation of 75 locations in the county where roadways crossstreams containing steelhead. After a thorough study ofeach stream crossing, Greenspace and the CaliforniaConservation Corps will ultimately produce a document cotaining a comprehensive analysis of the areas where corretive measures must be taken. The document will includeprioritized scheduling of restoration activlties that the coucan use when assessing and organizing their resources. The study will initially inventory and measure thestream crossings, including stream flow, pool depth, velocmeasurements, and other data essential to this evaluationprocess. The age, wear and performance of the culverts wbe noted, including the culvert's potential capability duringWhere the Fish Meets lcont'd on Paqe
