Dan Hole Pond Watershed Trust News Letter Summer 2011 Number 18 Dan Hole Pond Watershed Trust Mission Statement “To preserve the quality of the natural resources, wildlife habitat, and beauty of the Dan Hole Ponds watershed area for the benefit of the general public.” The Dan Hole Pond Watershed Trust Established in March 2000 as a 501(c) (3) tax exempt, publicly supported organization Membership Goal for 2011 Set at Two Hundred Members Since its inception in 2000, the all- volunteer Dan Hole Pond Watershed Trust has had a loyal cadre of supporters who have generously contributed for specific conservation projects and have also become part of the Trust as annual supporting members. They have provided critical financial support with their yearly membership contributions. A minor part of those contributions has paid for our very minimal routine operating expenses. But each year the rest of those funds have been added to our Land Protection Fund and then used for the next conservation project. That is how we were able to act quickly last year to initiate the Gulf Brook project. Now we need to replenish the Land Protection Fund to be ready for the next land protection opportunity. We will assign almost all of this year’s membership contributions to the Fund. Please renew your membership as generously as possible. And if you have not yet become a member, please join this year. Membership in our dedicated conservation family will help preserve and protect the land that we value in the Ossipee Mountains. Last year over 190 persons or families supported the Trust through membership contributions and/or Gulf Brook project contributions. That set a new record of community participation. Now, we want to sustain and expand that level of support into the future and have set a 2011 goal of 200 members. Please send your membership contribution today by using the form on the back page. Strong Start to 2011 Membership Drive The 2010 membership list below shows 118 members. A total of 192 contributions were made when additional donors to the Gulf Brook Project are counted. The spring 2011 mailing urging renewal of membership or initiating a new membership has elicited a strong initial response. So far 85 membership contributions have been received. The generous support of the individuals and organizations listed below has allowed us to continue and expand our efforts to conserve the forested landscape of the watershed. Your contributions are greatly appreciated and are vital to our success. We have made every effort to accurately list those who made contributions in 2010. We apologize if there are any errors or omissions and hope that you will notify us of them

30 July Annual Meeting to be Held at Camp Merrowvista The annual meeting will be held at Camp Merrowvista on the Tuftonboro end of Big Dan Hold Pond this year on Saturday July 30 at 4 pm. The meeting committee has begun planning and is working with the Camp to make the meeting a unique experience. We will be using Danforth Lodge as the focus of the event. It will serve as the site for the Pot Luck dinner – which is becoming an annual meeting tradition. Tables and chairs will be set up and a kitchen is available for warming dishes and limited preparation. Restroom facilities are also available. Limited handicap parking will be available close to Danforth Lodge and onsite parking for all is available at specified location within the camp. Please note: Merrowvista is "dry" during the summer, so as much as we will be celebrating our past and future successes, we will be doing so with non-alcoholic beverages. Merrowvista was a strong supporter of the DHPWT initial purchase of the “Merrow Property” and they are very pleased to host the meeting. Dan Cassidy of the camp will lead a "green" tour of the camp facilities to show their solar arrays, water power generation and other work prior to the 4 pm start of the meeting. And Dr. Rick Van De Poll has offered to lead a “mushroom walk” then also. These activities, combined with Jeff Lougee's power point presentation of the Ossipee Mountains Conservation Coalition study will make this a very attractive meeting. (See the article on the next

page for more about the OMCC report.) Please come and join your fellow supporters of the DHPWT for an interesting and informative meeting. If you plan to attend, for our planning please RSVP to Martha Copithorne at [email protected]

Volunteers Needed For Trail Clearing Events Trail clearing projects are planned during July to maintain and improve access to our properties. All hands are welcome to participate in these events. Contact the group leaders to sign up:

Land Trust Alliance Update As a member of the national Land Trust Alliance (LTA) the DPWT continues to evaluate our operations to be compliant with the requirements and suggestions provided by the LTA. We are also preparing to comply with the requirements set by the LTA to participate in a specialized insurance program to protect our land investments.

DHPWT Participates in Ossipee Mountains Conservation Resource Assessment Project The Dan Hole Pond Watershed Trust has participated for two years in a resource evaluation of the Ossipee Mountains resulting in the issuance of a final report identifying the key conservation features of the mountains. In conjunction with the Green Mountain Conservation Group, Lakes Region Conservation Trust, The Nature Conservancy, The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and representatives from the individual towns which are part of the Mountain community, Trust members have taken part in surveys, assessments and mapping of the Ossipee Mountain area.

The Ossipees represent the second largest area of contiguous forest land in New Hampshire south of the White Mountains. As such it offers a unique and valuable habitat for game and a variety of plant species. The objective of the “Land Conservation Resource Assessment of the Ossipee Mountains” conducted by representatives of the above named groups was to identify the features of the area that are significant for conservation and husbandry of the wild life, flora and water resources that are valued in this key open space area.

The working groups focused on the following resource components to arrive at a weighted view for conservation evaluation of the survey area:

• Agricultural land and open space • Cultural, historic and

archaeological resources • Recreational resources • Views and aesthetic resources • Water resources • Wildlife and biodiversity • Working forest resources

The end product is an overlay map which provides cumulative value shading to indicate areas that are important for conservation protection as well as identifying those areas that are of key economic interest for the tourism and forestry industries in the area. The graphic below depicts how the overlay process is completed and on the following page the final map is shown.

The map also indicates with green shading those areas already protected for conservation purposes by easements or outright ownership.

Ensuring the Preservation of the Trust Through Estate Planning One way that members and friends of the DHPWT can help ensure the continued viability of the Trust is to remember the DHPWT Land Protection Fund in conjunction with estate planning. A bequest to the fund will provide an enduring legacy for future generations.

Window on the Ossipees “Window on the Ossipee Mountains” view site on Route 16 has seen major advances this winter and spring with the placement of boulders to define the parking area and the erection of a kiosk which will contain information about the mountain vista and the site ecology for those who pause to enjoy the view. Members of the board recently walked the site as part of our annual easement compliance inspection.
