Seasons of faith : Summer . How does summertime remind you of faith? At times we assume that our faith is not vibrant, full of life. Perhaps we think of ourselves as lacking faith. Consider summertime. As long as it rains, and it often does, everything grows. The grass grows fast, the trees, more slowly. We work to contain the growth and encourage the summer life according to our wishes. Yet in all the managing, we don’t produce the growth. We defend what we have planted from pests and other plants that would overtake them, but the growth is a joyful mystery. So it is with faith. We nurture faith in ourselves and others and it grows by nature. Unlike plants in the fall or winter, faith never stops growing. It might go “underground.” It might be disguised. It might appear dormant, but it is always growing, and it never depends on us. We do not produce our own faith. Sure, we can be more aware or less aware of our faith, and clearly it is more helpful to be aware of our faith than not, but there are no “magic” formulas or necessary step -by-step processes for faith production. Faith grows as summer foliage: It just does. Mingled with all the extra work managing the “growing season” of summer, we also rest (vacation!). Likewise, in our faith, we rest knowing that God welcomes us as children. Baptism reminds us of the gift of faith and of our belovedness as children of God. All of life, faith included, is the gift by which we live in the presence of Mercy and Peace, with joy. You are beloved, foibles, “failures,” frustrations, mistakes, disappointments, and all. Along with all of our gifts. No one is excluded in this giftedness and mercy. The family of God has no boundaries. Sure, we tend to set limits, but these are not the work of the Divine Mystery, the source and ground of all life. Seasons of faith: Summer.

Sure, we can be more aware or less aware

of our faith, and clearly it is more helpful to be aware of our faith than not, but there are no “magic” formulas or necessary step-by-step processes for faith production. Faith grows as summer foliage: It just does.

SPAGHETTI SUPPER - MARCH 26, 2017 Thank you everyone who helped in the kitchen to prepare, cook, and serve the spaghetti supper. Also, a big thank you to everyone who donated food. We couldn’t have raised money for Habitat For Humanity without your help. Total donation made to Habitat of York April 9 was $500.00. Thank you all for your support towards this worthy cause.

BLOOD DRIVE - APRIL 10, 2017 Central PA Blood Bank was pleased and grateful we provided space for a blood drive in the church house. They saw 24 people and were able to collect 19 units of blood. So, with everybody’s help, we were able to save 57 local lives. To the ladies and businesses who provided food, thank you so much! It was delicious as usual. Our next Central PA Blood drive is Monday, September 11. Mark your calendars now and hope to see you then!

LWR BLANKET MAKING - MAY 6, 2017 Part of our Lenten project this year was to make blankets for Lutheran

World Relief to distribute to refugees across the world. Thanks for

everybody’s help and also thanks to Thrivent’s Action Team for the food

they provided for us as we made the blankets.

CHURCH HOUSE RENTAL

COMMUNITYAID CLOTHING

COLLECTION BIN Barren’s Council has approved partnering with CommunityAid by placing a clothing collection bin at the end of our side parking lot.

The donated clothing in the bin will be removed several times each week and sold in CommunityAid thrift stores. Based on the weight of the clothing in the bin, Barren’s is awarded with a quarterly cash donation per pound. This is mainly a clothing/shoe bin; however, small household items may be included, as long as they are not glass or breakable items. In addition, we will receive free clothing vouchers for the needy in our area, which can be used in any CommunityAid thrift store. After one year, we are also eligible to apply for a grant.

Please help get the word out that we have a bin in our parking lot; this is not only a fundraiser for us, but also helps improve the quality of life for individuals and families in our local communities.

Place your unneeded/in

good condition clothing into the bin today!

Visit CommunityAid website for additional information: www.communityaid.net.

Our graduates will be recognized during worship on Sunday, June 4 at Barren’s and June 11 at Emmanuel. As our graduates look forward to the next phase of their lives with excitement, anticipation, and perhaps a little apprehension, we hope these words will serve them well: “Do not pray for an easy life; pray to be a stronger person. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers but for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you will be the miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself and the richness of life which has come to you by the grace of God.” (source: The Newsletter). May God bless you wherever the road may lead you. CLC FILEY’S VBS July 30- August 3, 2017

6:30 – 8:30PM

Can you imagine being 500 years old? Come and discover how Martin Luther changed the church 500 years ago! At Reformation Station kids will discover how God called Martin Luther and us to change the church. Kids participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, singing catchy songs, playing teamwork building games, digging into yummy treats, and testing our crafty creativity to remind them of God’s calling. Each day concludes with Martin Luther lyrics that gets everyone involved in living what they learned. Kids at Reformation Station will join mission efforts to support New Life for Girls. We will not have a closing program on our last day. Instead, we will have Kona Ice visit here at Filey’s for a special treat for the children participating in VBS.

Reformation station is for kids from preschool through 5th grade. For more information call the church office at 717-432-4878 or visit our website at www.clcfileys.com and find our 2017 VBS page under our events tab.

Barren’s Council Meeting Minutes - April 11, 2017

Treasurers Report; Carl: $353 from the pancake supper held in February is to be donated to the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund and $500 from the spaghetti dinner held in March will be donated to Habitat for Humanity . Comptroller Report: The discrepancy in the comptrollers report was caused by the absence of the Property Insurance Line Item because the premium had been paid in December 2016. There was nothing of note to address this month.

Unfinished Business: • Plaque acknowledging the donations for church house windows/blinds has been ordered. • Linda left message for East Shore Church’s altar guild about cleaning our paraments.

New Business: • New rule to be added to current list will state that the church will not be held responsible

for anything left behind in the Church House or anything that is lost as a result of using the Church House. For example, if someone stated they lost a laptop computer or a cell phone, we would not want to be liable for such an item.

• Ralph has volunteered to install a motion detector light outside the CH kitchen door. • A service of “Renewal of Wedding Vows” will be held at Barrens Farmer’s Fair Weekend

for family members of a former member. The service will not be officiated by Pastor Roy. In lieu of the usual $75 charge, council agreed to a donation to the church instead.

• The blood drive was successful with 19 donors. • Boscov’s annual “Friends Helping Friends” Campaign will be held in October. Laurie

volunteered to contact Boscov’s and schedule a day to sell the $5 coupons with all proceeds going to the church. The coupon is good for 25% off most purchases made October 17 only.

Building and Property Report: There was a clarification of the duties of the sexton to include shoveling sidewalks as soon as possible after a snowfall and especially if the church will be in use.

Unfinished Business: • Diane Shearer will repair the paraments, as she is able. Tammy will call Paul Davis

Restoration and Service Pro to see if they offer any kind of cleaning service for church paraments or if they can recommend someone who does.

• The CommunityAid Donation Bin will be delivered soon. Deb Racer is the contact person. • The plaque listing all those who donated windows or blinds for the church house has been

New Business: • Anyone scheduling meetings or activities in the church house should make sure they appear on the Google calendar

so the sexton will have adequate time to do any cleaning necessary prior to the date. Lois Diller and Deb Racer handle the scheduling of the church house. Any extra work requests can be placed in the sexton’s mailbox.

• A financial review of the treasury books will be done by Jones Accounting in April. This is done routinely to make sure there are no discrepancies.

• Synod Assembly at Messiah College is June 2 & 3. Pam Arndt and Rich Harner have volunteered to attend on behalf of Barrens. They also will attend the West Shore Conference meeting April 2 at 3 pm in preparation for the Assembly. A motion was made by Lori and seconded by Ralph to accept Pam and Rich as our representatives.

• The annual Bike Tour that passes by the church house will be held June 17. Volunteers provide refreshments to the riders and portable toilets are available for their use. An additional Bike Race will be held June 24 and it was agreed by the church council to allow these riders to use the bathroom facilities in the church house, if needed.
