TYGER RUN – SATURDAY, 21 MARCH 2015 (06H00 – 09H00)

There will be a Tyger Run taking place this Saturday, 21 March 2015, from 06h00 – 09h00.

Please note that this event includes a 21km, 10km and 5km fun run and might affect your travel plans in parts of Kenridge, Durbanville Hills and D'Urbanvale. The race starts and finishes at Tygervalley Centre.

The main roads and intersections that will be crossed by runners and walkers are:

Old Oak

Kendal

Tindale Way

Race Course Road

Vissershok

Please also take care when crossing or driving on Franshoek Road, Kenridge Avenue, and the top part of Van Riebeeck Avenue.

Tygervalley Road and Carl Cronje drive will not be affected.

GR. 8 CAMPS

The first of the four Grade 8 camps leave for Rawsonville tomorrow and we hope that our Grade 8’s have a wonderful time. A report on the camps will appear in the first issue of the 2nd Term.

Some important tests and exams still remain to be completed and we ask all pupils to keep focused until the term ends.

URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL PUPILS

NO pupils will be allowed to go home early on any day or after a test without a written letter from the parent requesting this. No emails!

Permission for going home early will only be allowed for emergencies.

If a pupil is too sick to stay for the full day after a test, then they must not come to school to write, but must provide the school with a medical certificate.

PLEASE NOTE!

All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.

All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.

Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.

Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

4) BOYS’ HOCKEY TOUR TO HOLLAND – 21 MARCH TO 2 APRIL

Tomorrow we bid farewell to our hockey boys, accompanied by Mr Elgie, Mr Clarke, Mr Goslett and Mr Dreyer.

We wish them well ‘on tour’ and hope they return with many happy memories.

Thank you to the parents and the tour committee for all their hard work and for making this tour possible.

Photos will appear in the first Focus of Term 2.

APPEAL FOR PROPS FOR THE ANNUAL SCHOOL PRODUCTION

Every second year, Fairmont’s actors, singers and dancers put on an Annual Production. This year, we look forward to another original production from our talented script writer, Mr Fanie Basson.

Although the Production will take place in August, there are a couple of props that may prove a little difficult to source and so we are asking Fairmont families for help in sourcing these timeously.

We are looking for pieces of antique furniture similar to those shown below. If any Fairmont families have any which they would be willing to sell, donate or lend to the school, we would be grateful if you would contact us. Alternatively, if you have contacts in the antique furniture business, perhaps you could help us?

THANK YOU MONTIES

On Saturday, 14 March 2015, the Grade 9 or ‘Monty’ Quad resounded to the sounds of enthusiastic hammering, power drilling, chain sawing, compressor spraying and lots of chatting and laughing! Members of Monty families, young and old, rolled up their sleeves and joined in to make 10 brand spanking new wooden bench-tables, and to refurbish 4 old ones, making them good as new.

The Quad went from having no bench-tables to having 14 in just the space of one (long, but fun) morning! In addition, the three trees were cut back and work was begun to repair the damaged fixed wood and concrete benches under the trees. From Roxy Dunleavy (aged 8) painting bench supports and Devon Gdanis (Grade 9) high up in the trees pulling out dead wood, to Nicholas Johansson’s (grade 8) grandfather determinedly repairing a very rickety old bench-table, we had three different generations side-by-side helping to improve the School environment for our children.

Looking around the Quad at the hard work and the social interaction, as people who had never met spent a few hours together doing very unfamiliar (for most) but highly rewarding manual work, it was clear that Fairmont is truly a UNIQUE School! What a great team we made – learners, RCL and Green Society members, siblings, mothers, fathers, past parents, the Principal and his wife, and even grandparents! Our heartfelt thanks goes to Henry Nel, a member of the SGB and a tireless supporter of the school, for enabling this workparty.

7) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE

THE LITTLE OLD LADY WHO STRUCK LUCKY AGAIN!

The little old lady is back! This time Martha Andersson and her friends - The League of Pensioners - have left behind their dreary care home in Stockholm and are enjoying the bright lights of Las Vegas.

This is their opportunity for a new lease of life and they plan to make the most of it. But before long, they are up to their old tricks. And with ingenious tactics, a pair of false teeth and a wheelchair each, they plot to outwit the security system at one of the casinos.

As their antics become more and more daring, Martha and her friends head back to Sweden to continue their money-making schemes. However, they aren’t the only ones planning on stealing bucket loads of cash, and they soon find themselves pitted against a gang of dangerous criminals.

9) WON LIFE : VOLUNTEER AT OUR LITERACY CENTRE

The Literacy Centre, run in Fisantekraal, is a volunteer-driven organization that relies on willing members of the public to volunteer their time reading with those learners eager to learn this very important milestone.

With each volunteer, Won Life is able to extend their reach and really make a difference in the community of Fisantekraal. If you can spare an hour or two each week, please email Won Life on:

10) DESIGN DEPARTMENT

THEME FOR THE TERM: INSPIRED BY A RECIPE!

At the end of a busy first term, the Gr.12 Design students managed to hand in some beautiful and exciting projects after much research, brainstorming, planning and prototyping. Well done, Matrics! We celebrate your progress, creativity and hard work!

Some of our staff members, Ms Cillie, Ms Hofmeyr, Mrs Herselman and Mrs Uys attended the annual Design Indaba Conference held at the CTICC with 30 of the Gr. 12 Design students for much needed inspiration!! We came back knowing that a spirit of excellence in our own professional careers is still the key to producing engaging learners who can make a difference in every area of society. Design should improve the quality of life.

11) PREFECT CAMP

Last Sunday, my wife and I visited the Prefects’ Camp at High Africa.

It was an amazing experience to once again witness the prefects in action at the camp.

14) FAIRMONT HOCKEY NEWS

Our 1st Team Girls’ Hockey beat Bergvliet 5 : 0 on Saturday morning in the 1st round of the Spar Knockout Tournament, progressing to the next round.

A reminder goes out to all hockey players to keep checking the hockey notice board. Training times will go up for all teams and they will stay the same now for the rest of the season, due to

summer sports ending.

Good luck to our girls that are reaching the final stages of the WP Hockey Trials.

Our Boys 1st team and U16A teams played against Paarl Boys High School in a 2-match series where both Fairmont teams won the Trophy for winning the 2-match series.

The U14A Boys’ Team drew 1 : 1 with Paarl Boys High School.

Good Luck to our Boys’ and Girls’ U14A teams as they take part in the D.F. Malan Tournament this weekend.

The 1st Team Girls’ Hockey ended the indoor season off with a 1 : 1 draw against Rustenberg.

Our Boys jet off to Holland this tomorrow, Friday, 20 March. We wish them all the best and hope they make lifetime memories.

15) U14A & U15A CRICKET TEAMS

Attached are some pictures taken of the U14A vs 15A cricket match on Saturday. The U15A team won the match, and have yet to lose a match since the beginning of 2014.

16) WELL DONE

Hishaam Essop (Gr. 11) & Jihad Essop (Gr. 8)

Hishaam Essop (U/18) and Jihad Essop (U/14) participated at the Individual District Schools’ Chess Trials held at Fairmont High on Friday, 6 February – Saturday, 7 February 2015.

They qualified to compete at the Western Province Individual Schools’ Chess Trials held at Wynberg Boys’ High on Friday, 6 March – Saturday, 7 March 2015.

Both have been awarded W.P. School Colours and will be representing W.P. at the Western Cape Tournament to be hosted in Worcester from 1 May - 3 May 2015.

Hishaam has also qualified, via the Top 10 Grand Prix Rating Nationally, to participate at the South African Junior Individual Closed Chess Championships being held in Pretoria from 3 April - 10 April 2015.

From the Zonals, a Western Cape team has been selected and we are very proud to announce that Ethan Noble was awarded a place in the team representing the Western Cape.

Tristan Hamilton (Gr. 12)

Tristan represented South Africa at the Curro sponsored SA JUNIORS’ INTERNATIONAL which is part of the Global Jnr Golf Tour held 9 – 12 March’15.

He finished 18th out of 146 International Junior golfers from 22 Countries. Well done Tristan, a great result and a privilege to represent your country amongst the best junior golfers in the world.

17) PRINCIPAL

Nine school days remain before close of school this term.

As we head towards Wednesday, 1 April 2015, we start looking back at a term filled with a variety of activities and achievements.

Parents are reminded that reports will be released on 1 April and details of closing time will be published in the next Focus.
