Page 5: Fairmont Focus 7: 5 March 2015

All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.

Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.

Saturday 14 March : Fairmont Family Workparty

Calling all Monty Families!

We are holding a work party on Saturday, 14 March 2015, from 09h00, in the Grade 9 Quad. These work parties end at approximately 14h00 with a bring-and-braai. Mr and Mrs Dingley will be joining us on this occasion. We will be building new table-benches for the quads. The working teams will consist of a bench assembly team, a paint and spray team, a bench repair team, and a general clean-up team.

Page 6: Fairmont Focus 7: 5 March 2015

Please come along: join the fun and make new friends, while doing something practical to improve our children’s school!

Bring along any woodworking power tools you may have such as drills, sanders, screwdrivers, saws, etc., including extension cords, sandpaper and sandpaper blocks. Rakes, spades, garden brooms, shears, secateurs, saws and black bags will also be useful. Please also remember your cooler box with some meat to braai and some drinks.

Fairmont K-Day Competition and Civvies Day

On Thursday 26 February Kfm Personality Tim Thabethe visited Fairmont with other members of the Kfm team, to do the draw of 2 lucky winners for K-DAY tickets. Learners who had paid R10 to wear civvies and to be entered into the draw to win 2 sets of 4 K-DAY tickets, gathered on the field at 2nd break. Our 2 lucky winners were Dylan Squair 9Lp and Romano Cigana 12Ne and we hope that they and their families and friends enjoyed all the fun of K-Day last Saturday. Tim also handed out a number of other prizes to lucky Monties. This fundraiser, organised by the Parent Forum and run as a team effort with the help of the Fairmont Staff, raised over R7800 for our school! THANK YOU to Kfm for the donation of the tickets and to all the staff, parents and learners who supported this fundraiser and showed great school spirit.

The Adventure Club is extending an invitation to the learners of the club to join in our first outing for the year. We will be joining the Surfshack in Muizenburg for a surf lesson, including those who are inexperienced with no equipment of their own. We will be hosting outings throughout the year and all events are optional for the learners. We would like to encourage you to send your child on these outings as we will only have five throughout the year.

Please see the details below for our first outing:

Date: 29 March (Sunday)

Place: Muizenburg, The Surfshack

Time: 13h00

Transport: Own transport required

Page 8: Fairmont Focus 7: 5 March 2015

Cost: R250 (includes lesson, instructor, surfboard and wetsuit)

Paid by: 25 March 2015 (Bring proof of payment and indemnity form to Ms.Soga)

As these outings require own transport, we encourage you to form a lift club where each parent will alternate each term. As there are only five outings, the transporting on your part will be kept to a minimum.

Please feel free to contact [email protected] for any further information.

9) CCEA CAREER EXHIBITION (GRADES 9 & 11)

On Tuesday, 3 March 2014, we had 45 tertiary institutions displaying their details in the Student Centre for our pupils to enquire about possible career options.

It was a very successful venture, with pupils asking very pertinent questions.

10) WON LIFE : VOLUNTEER AT OUR LITERACY CENTRE

The Literacy Centre, run in Fisantekraal, is a volunteer-driven organization that relies on willing members of the public to volunteer their time reading with those learners eager to learn this very important milestone.

Page 9: Fairmont Focus 7: 5 March 2015

With each volunteer, Won Life is able to extend their reach and really make a difference in the community of Fisantekraal. If you can spare an hour or two each week, please email Won Life on:

[email protected]

Watching the faces of these children as they reach each small milestone will give you a great sense of reward.

11) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE

A HIPPO LOVE STORY by KAREN PAOLILLO

When the threads that hodl human society together unravel, the animal kingdom suffers. Karen Paolillo discovered this first-hand in Zimbabwe when she developed a close connection with thirteen hippos in their natural habitat, the Turgwe River.

Her mission to save these exceptional animals after they came under threat of drought, land invasions and poachers developed into a beautiful African love story. It is also the stirring tale of how one woman faced personal and financial adversities while ensuring the survival of a family of hippos, with Bob, a three-ton bull, as their leader.

With the establishment of the Turgwe Hippo Trust, Karen has triumphed as guardian of the hippos, and the animals have prospered ever since. A Hippo Love Story shares this heroic journey of a nature lover who became an ally of one of Africa’s most fearsome animal species.

Theodor Demasius was selected at the Feedem Pitseng Cricket Tournament in Worcester, in September 2014, to go to Sri Lanka as part of a Western Cape Schools’ Invitational Cricket Tour. He will be leaving for Sri Lanka from 1 April - 12 April 2015.

Ben Vorster (Class of 2008)

Ben has passed his final board exam and is now a Qualified Chartered Accountant, at 23 years of age. He is doing his articles at First Rand in Johannesburg and will finish at the end of this year.

Ben is seen here with his wife.

Congratulations, Ben!

Jordan Grossett Gr. 9

Jordan is currently doing his 3rd level SANPARKS Jnr Rangers.

A few weeks ago, Jordan and his brother Connor (the little boy in a blue t-shirt in the video) were asked to participate in an IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) video against international wildlife trade that will be shown around the world and at a summit where world leaders will see it. Individual children from all over the world were filmed. There was so much footage that only some of the kids made it into the final video so this is even more special! Please note that Jordan is proudly sporting his Jnr Ranger t-shirt! This is an amazing initiative by SANPARKS and I am very proud that these kids, globally, are taking a stand to make a difference. Now we just hope the world leaders take notice!

If you would like to watch the video, kindly click on the following link:

http://www.ifaw.org/international/news/4-ways-get-seriousaboutwildlifecrime

Keep up the good work, Jordan.

16) PRINCIPAL

On Wednesday night we witnessed our swimming team perform in the A-League Gala at Newlands.

Whilst we were up against some fierce opposition, that did not stop us from having some good individual performances.

Thank you to Mrs Friedenthal and the 100 pupil supporters who cheered the swimmers along. Thank you to all the teachers who came along to support our highly spirited swimming team.

To the Monty Community, have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely
