Welcome to the2012 McLeodCounty Fair

What’s Inside

By Scott SchochenmaierPresident of the McLeod County Agricultural Association

On behalf of the McLeod County AgriculturalAssociation and my fellow ambassadors ofthe county fair, welcome to the 140thMcLeod County Fair.

It is hard to believe that less than a monthfrom now, the McLeod County Fair will be in the historybooks.

As the Fair Board finalizes plans, you can feel the excite-ment and anticipation growing stronger each day. The phoneis constantly ringing and entry applications are being downloaded off our brand new, user friendly, website. Take a minute and check it out … lots of great pictures andtons of helpful information.

Along with all of our old favorites, the 4-H program, open class competitions, finearts, gardening displays, and grandstand entertainment, the McLeod County Fair istruly a remarkable cross section of all McLeod County has to offer. With 140 years ofthe fair, we are truly fortunate for the gifts and talents of our county residents.

Many new and exciting events are planned for this year’s County Fair. I will try andhit some of the highlights that are planned.

This year’s fair runs from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Sunday, Aug. 19, at the fair-grounds in Hutchinson.

Two nights of Extreme Autocross and motocross will be featured in the grandstand, along with our very popular, Extreme Demolition Derby. I’m told by my grandstandambassadors that the demo derby this year is a “don’t miss” event!

Our annual sweet corn feed will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, in theoutdoor mall area.

For our tractor enthusiasts, we have arranged for the Allis Chalmers tractor paradeto make a stop on Wednesday evening at the fair. Come out and take a look at thevintage equipment as it makes its way across Minnesota.

Wednesday will also feature the band Them Pesky Kids on the C&L Stage in theNorth Corporate Tent. This is their second trip to Hutchinson. The band rocked theCivic Arena a year ago and we had to book them to kick off the 140th County Fair instyle.

Thursday evening, a new event is planned. “Rock and Wrestling” takes centerstage. We are happy to welcome back to Hutchinson the American Wrestling Federa-tion. Last spring at Hutchinson High School, we were all treated to the marvels ofprofessional wrestling.

The AWF promises a new and exciting show for us, and we can’t wait to see them. This is an all-ages show, and 12 or younger will be admitted for free.

Kids, bring Mom and Dad, and enjoy a beautiful Thursday night at the County Fair. And, by the way, our local favorite teacher/wrestler, Chad Harlander, is promising a

“return to the ring” that night, so come out and cheer Chad and the others on. Blurred Vision takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. and will play before and after wrestling,

so plan on staying late.Friday is jam packed with a full slate of activities and music. Once again, we are

turning the clock back to the 1980s. Back by popular demand is Ladies of the ’80s.The band debuted on the C&L stage two years ago and was a huge crowd pleaser. Itwill be opening for regional favorite Hairball, who puts on a show like no other.

Outdoors under the big tent is the only way to reminisce about those big hair days.

StayinghealthyThe fair always has the best foods. Fromcheese curds to gyros, the options are tasty— and often packed with calories.

At 4:30 p.m. in the North CorporateTent, we will recognize all veterans inMcLeod County and the surroundingarea. Many special events are planned forthe program.

We will also welcome to the C&L Stagenational recording artist Rockie Lynne.Rockie’s powerful voice and deep patriotic

Diamondback will close out the daywith their country rock show starting at 8p.m.

Sunday will bring the 140th County Fair

to a close, but not without finishing it upin style. This year, we welcome a fun newevent to the North Corporate Tent — wine.

Our friends at Crow River Winery willjoin us this year to teach us all about wineand offer some samples along the way. Itwill be a great way to get the day rollingalong with strolling through the classiccars which will return for the second-annual McLeod County Fair Classic CarShow.

If that is not enough, Ribfest is back andbetter than ever. Check the website fortimes to taste some of the area’s best ribs.Classic Cars, wine and ribs will sure getyou in the mood for the County Fair’sfavorite, the Whitesidewalls, again back bypopular demand. The boys will be takingthe stage at 5:30 p.m. to help us dance the140th fair away.

Thanks to the countless volunteers, oursponsors for donations and the supportwe receive from McLeod County through-out the year. A big thank you to countystaff for keeping the fairgrounds in greatshape.

Let’s face it, it’s hard to resist a just-off-the-grill bratwurst in a toasted bun, anorder of hot-from-the-fat cheese curds ora powdered sugar-dusted funnel cake.

It’s all so good.It might make it easier to “just say no” if

you knew the ugly truth. A brat in a bunweighs in at as much as 800 calories with60-plus grams of fat, fried cheese curds tipthe scale at about 560 calories with almost40 grams of fat, and a funnel cake will setyou back about 760 calories and 44 gramsof fat.

Oh, the pain. Through the years, fair treats have gone

from the traditional such as snow conesand root beer floats to encompass justabout everything from fried pickles on astick to fried candy bars, egg rolls andgyro sandwiches.

No matter how you sip, slice or slatherit, it’s hard to say no to the trifecta of fat, sugar and salt.

Better fair food options exist. Sugges-tions for saving calories and fat gramsinclude: cotton candy at 171 calories andno fat, a large pretzel at 340 calories and 2

grams of fat or a hot dog on abun with ketchup and mus-tard at 250 calories and 15fat grams.

Need help to avoid adiet meltdown? Here aresome tips to follow: Plan your

munchies. Don’t go tothe fair hungry becausethat’s a guaranteedrecipe for disaster.Take the edge off yourhunger at home. Itwill give you morecontrol when facedwith a steady streak offood vendors. Pick and choose your

favorites. With the variety oftasty treats available, it’s easyto become overwhelmed andoverloaded. Take a walk aroundthe fairgrounds before makingany food choices. See what’savailable and choose your veryfavorites. Share it. If you’re itching to sam-

ple everything in sight, take a friend alongand split the items. You’ll only do half the

damage. Drink water. There’s

nothing like a cool drink ofwater to clean your palette.

Often, when you thinkyou’re hungry, you mayactually be thirsty.

Drink up.It was Scarlett

O’Hara in “Gone WithThe Wind,” who said,“I'll think about ittomorrow ...” If that’syour approach to

County Fair eating,that’s OK.

Just know that it takesabout five steps to walk off

one calorie. A slice of pep-peroni deep-dish pizza at390 calories per slice willcost you 1,950 steps. Exercisephysiologists recommendwalking 10,000 steps per day. This equals about five miles.

If you can’t say no andbreak the calorie bank at the

Country Fair, there’s hope —increase your exercise and cut back onyour food intake.

DOUG TUMANISN’T JUST A

SUCCESSFULFARMER, HE’S

THE MANBEHIND McLEOD

COUNTY’SANNUAL DAIRY

COMPETITION

By TERRY [email protected]

McLeod County has been a land of dairyfarms ever since settlers of Europeandescent began moving here in the 1850sand 1860s.

Even with a decline in the number ofdairy farms in recent decades, McLeodCounty farmers continue to produce someof the best dairy cows in Minnesota, according to Doug Tuman.

Tuman should know. Not only is theHutchinson farmer a well-respected dairy-man and dairy breeder himself, but he hasoverseen the McLeod County Fair’srenowned dairy competition for more than40 years as superintendent of the fair’sopen class dairy division.

“McLeod, Steele (Owatonna) and Olmst-ed (Rochester) are probably not only thebiggest county fair dairy competitions, buthave excellent quality, too,” Tuman said. “It

is pretty prestigious to win here. I’ve alwayscalled this a mini-state fair because somany of our exhibitors go on and do well atthe State Fair.”

And that continues even as numbershave slipped slightly in recent yearsbecause of the decline in the number ofdairy farms.

“We’ve gone down in numbers, but notin quality,” Tuman said. “We’ve got a gooddairy fair even though we don’t have the(number of) farmers we once had.”

Overflow crowdThat dairy is perhaps the most popular

animal exhibit at the McLeod County fair iseasy to see. The Agribition/Cattle barn isstuffed with dairy cows, leading to thesetup of an overflow tent the past severalyears.

While now directly under Tuman’ssupervision, 4-H dairy exhibiting contin-ues strong. Perhaps the fastest growing cat-

egory, however, is the 4-H beef show. It isoverflowing, from using space in the swinebarn to needing a large tent this year, too.

Tuman arranges the procurement of thetent and oversees the “stalling” for the 4-Hdairy. He helps set up the gates, makes surethe milkhouse is prepared and arranges tohave manure hauled away each day.

The open class attracts about 175 dairyanimals from several breeds — everythingfrom calves to aged milking cows. They’llbegin rolling in at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug.15.

“The biggest challenge we have is gettingeveryone stalled at the fair — making sureeveryone has enough room,” Tuman said.

The open class dairy show begins at 9:30a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, the fourth day of thefive-day fair. Tom Foss of Cambridge is thisyear’s dairy judge.

“We’ve got a good dairy fair even though we don’t have the (numberof) farmers we once had.”

New Century Academy is an “environment thatgives students everything they need to succeed.”

“It is kind of a big day for everybody,“Tuman said.

The 4-H Dairy Show is at 9 a.m. Thurs-day, Aug. 16.

Tuman said he relies on a good crew ofvolunteers to help set up everything tomake the stars of the show — the cattle —comfortable.

“I have three very good helpers — ScottRickeman and Tim Albrecht of Hutchinsonand Mark Vacek of Glencoe,” he said. “Wehave a lot of good people involved in (thedairy) organizations.” Many of themworked at the state Holstein Show thattook place at the fairgrounds in June.

He also credits his wife, Jeanne, for all thework she puts in helping to stall the entriesand then clerking the show.

“She is a big help,” Tuman said.

Never envisioned 40 yearsThe Tumans had been married only a

couple of years and were farming justsoutheast of Hutchinson when Alfred

Block and Reuben Ulrich approached him. They thought he’d do a good job and prom-ised that the area’s competitive dairy farm-ers wouldn’t give him any trouble. Andthat’s pretty much been the case for theentire time.

“It is an honor. It’s been OK,” he said.He praised now retired fair secretary

Marian Filk for coming up with the annualherdsmanship award. It rewards theexhibitor or family who does the best job ofkeeping their exhibit area clean through-out the fair.

“It has really kept the barns clean,”Tuman said. “It is one of best things we’vedone.”

Once the fair is up and running, Tuman’srole switches from organizer to ambassa-dor.

“I usually walk around and answer ques-tions,” he said, “and I usually have cattlethere, too, to exhibit.”

Though he has been at the job more than40 years, Tuman still is having too muchfun to think about stepping aside. He nolonger milks Brown Swiss cows himself athome, but he raises breeding bulls andheifers that are sold all over the UnitedStates, Canada and Mexico. He has about100 head of cattle on X-Cello-O Farm alongState Highway 22.

“The people,” was his short answerwhen asked what he most enjoys aboutbeing the fair dairy superintendent. “I’ve

never had a problem with anyone. Anyissues that have come up have gottenresolved.”

Sitting at the big oak desk in the fairmanager’s office is Casey Walters. Herdesktop is littered with stacks of papers, and a laptop computer is open, sitting inthe middle of it.

Last year, Walters was the new kid onthe block, shadowing Marian Filk, then-fair manager, through the County Fair sea-son. This year she’s on her own.

“There are definitely things I’m learningalong the way,” said the Hutchinson

native. “It’s been going well. I really like it.”The official transfer of duties from Filk

to Walters took place in October at theannual meeting of the McLeod CountyAgricultural Association. Like Filk, Walters’title is executive secretary/fair manager.

While the face is different, the work has-n’t changed. With the County Fair onlyweeks away, there are still plenty of thingsto do.

One of the changes on Walters’ watch isa new McLeod County Fair website. Theweb address has stayed the same —www.mcleodcountyfair.com — but thesite has a new look. Navigation is easierwith County Fair information along theleft-hand side of the home page.

Each day of the fair has its own blue tab, which can be found along the top of thehome page. Looking for opening dayinformation? Click on the Wednesday taband a schedule of events is available.

Premium books are available at theCounty Fair office at the McLeod CountyFairgrounds in Hutchinson. Information isalso available online.

Non-livestock entries were due Aug. 1.Entry Day is Tuesday, Aug. 14.

“Open class entries from 2010 to 2011were up,” Walters said. “Quilts have reallytaken off and wine has expanded, too.”

A new family dining area is being addedthis year. It’s behind the South Tent in theoutdoor mall area. More picnic tables will

be available, plus new triangle-shapedtables for cozy conversation.

Walters said memorial money that oncewas used to purchase benches at the fair-grounds will now go toward buying moreof the new three-sided tables.

“Donations are welcome,” she said.

Thanks to grants from the SouthwestInitiative Fund and the Hutchinson Com-munity Foundation, the children’s barn-yard at the McLeod County Fairgrounds isbetter than ever.

“We decided to expand the children’sbarnyard to increase agricultural aware-ness in our community,” fair managerCasey Walters said, “and to educate youngchildren and families about the impor-tance of agriculture in their everyday life.”

All the popular animals will be back, plus new interactive areas. One exhibitguaranteed to attract the younger set is“Farmer For A Day,” where children will beable to experience a variety of farm-relat-ed activities.

Favorites the Cogley Sisters, MonaHjerpe and Maizy the Clown are returningto perform on this year’s Promise Stage.

In an interesting twist, a couple of per-formers who have appeared at RiverSongMusic Festival are making their firstappearances at the County Fair.

Last month, the duo — the Okee DokeeBrothers — entertained in the children’stent at RiverSong. They will play from 9:30to 10:15 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15p.m. Friday, Aug. 17.

Playing bluegrass and folk, the OkeeDokee Brothers share their humor andhomespun wisdom through their originalmusic. Their jokes appeal to their audi-ence — children — as well as to parents.

If you’re looking for a good reason forthe kids to turn off their video games andstop watching TV, this is it.

Taking the Promise Stage on Sunday,Aug. 19, is Patchouli, featuring BruceHecksel and Julie Patchouli. The acousticduo will perform from 11 to 11:45 a.m.and from noon to 12:45 p.m.

One-half of the duo has a connection to

Hutchinson. Hecksel is a “PK” or “preach-er’s kid.” His dad, the Rev. Stanton Heck-sel, served as pastor of Our Savior’sLutheran Church in Hutchinson, from1967 to 1976.

Hecksel said he and Patchouli are oftendescribed as “Joni Mitchell meets San-tana.”

They write and perform their ownmusic, which Hecksel described as “mod-ern day folk music with the purpose ofinspiring and uplifting.”

Patchouli draws heavily on inspirationfrom the 1960s and ’70s folk revivalistssuch as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, CatStevens, Simon and Garfunkel. To thismix, they add elements of Spanish fla-menco and many other African and Latinrhythm styles.

New performers on the Promise Stageinclude: Greta Grosch, actress; the Scot-tish Dancers; Star Michaelina, magician;Theatre of Fools; Stoney Point; DavidMalmberg, ventriloquist; and DazzlingDave, the yo-yo master.

New, familiar acts fill Promise Stage schedule

Patcholi — Bruce Hecksel and Julie Patchouli — will perform Sunday, Aug. 19. The duodescribes their music as “Joni Mitchell meets Santana.”
