A day at the Thurston County Fair wouldn’t be complete without corndogs, elephant ears, or some ice-cold lemonade. However, eating at public events tends to generate a lot of trash. The Thurston County Fair is committed to reducing waste, and has placed organics (compost) and recycle bins in many locations around the fairgrounds.

Last year, Thurston County Fair-goers recycled and composted over 500 lbs. of waste. This year we expect to collect twice as much! You can help us by properly recycling and composting items from food vendors here at the Fair, as well as items brought from home.

Not sure which bin your item goes in? Use the guide shown below:

Dog Agility Event Comes to the 2012 Thurston County Fair

If you happen to be at the Thurston County Fair on Sunday, August 5th and hear a lot of dogs barking, you may ask “who let the dogs out?” Don’t panic – the dogs aren’t loose. The barking is a joyful noise from the dogs that are running free

in the agility trials that will be going on at the Hicks Lake Barn.

For the second year, the Thurston County 4-H Dog Project will be conducting qualifying agility trials at the fair. 4-H Dog Project members and their dogs will compete in two events – a standards (obstacle) course and jumpers course in an attempt to earn qualifying scores that will make the eligible to be selected for the State Fair Agility Team that will compete in Puyallup in September.

This event is a fun spectator opportunity to watch kids and their dogs working as a team to accomplish a common goal – completion of two different types of obstacle courses. The standard course consists of a series of obstacles such as tunnels, tables, walks, A-frames and weave poles. The jumper course consists of mostly jumps with tunnels and weave poles. The complexity of each course varies by competition class (Elementary through Excellent), and classes are further divided by the dog’s jump height and the handler’s 4-H age group. The handler and dog travel the course in a specified pattern. They must score a minimum number of points and complete the course in a calculated amount of time to qualify for the state agility trial in September.

For those who are unfamiliar with a dog agility event, it looks much easier to do than it is. The 4-H member/dog teams who are competing in these events have been training for several months or longer. Some members also compete in other dog agility events that are sponsored by agility organizations established to promote this popular sport; these teams have been training for one year or more.

The Thurston County 4-H Dog Project sincerely thanks Fido’s Farm in Olympia, who is providing the agility equipment, the judge and offers special agility training classes for 4-H members on Sundays. In addition, Fido’s Farm offers their facility regularly to the Dog Project for other events throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more about Fido’s Farm, look them up at www.fidosfarm.com.

The Thurston County Fair is partnering with The Crisis Clinic who will be coordinating volunteers to work in the Thurston County Fair Information Booth this year at our annual fair. The Information Booth will be staffed by volunteers from our local community and the Crisis Clinic to assist fair visitors find what they are looking for and provide up to date information. We are excited to have the Crisis Clinic as a community partner providing valuable assistance in staffing the fair.

The Crisis Clinic normally provides the only free, confidential and immediate emotional crisis response, information and referral service in Thurston and Mason Counties. They are an anonymous 24/7 crisis intervention service which includes their Youth

Help Line. They strengthen the community through the training of crisis line volunteers and educating community groups on crisis intervention skills and community resources.

The Crisis Clinic lightens the load on emergency services and treatment providers by having trained, compassionate and non-judgmental listeners to defuse anger, sort through issues, including suicidal thoughts and help develop next steps toward problem resolution.

If you need help or want to talk, call theCrisis Line at: 360-586-2800 or theYouth Help Line at: 360-586-2777, or you can stop by the Fair Information Booth during Fair to get more information regarding the Crisis Clinic or find out where the nearest food vendor is!

General Fair Information

Plan to join the fun at Thurston County Fair’s Fall 2nd Hand Safari Community Garage Sale and Reuse Fair! This community event is being held the first Saturday in October from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Thurston County Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds is located at 3054 Carpenter Road in Lacey. Event includes garage sale booths, educational booths, free book and magazine exchange table, food, music and more! This is a great opportunity to sell, trade, and barter with others in your community. October will be a great time to sell your old holiday decorations and find some new ones. Don’t forget to bring your old books and magazines for the free exchange table. There will be $2 early-bird admission between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. and $1 admission after 9:00. Sign up now to have a garage sale booth and get ready to clear out your clutter. Coordinate with your friends, make it a family event, or use the opportunity to raise money for a charity. Booth space is $25 for an outdoor space and $40 for a covered space. Set up will be the Friday before from 12:00 noon until 10:00 p.m. The doors will be locked after set up Friday evening and security will be on-site until Saturday morning. Goodwill will have a trailer on-site and will be accepting donations throughout the day. This is a great opportunity to donate your leftovers at the end of the day. Visitors can also bring reusable items to donate. Items accepted for donation at Goodwill’s discretion. If you would like to have an educational booth, display, or be part of the presentations happening throughout the day sign up now! All community groups, non-profits, businesses, agencies and individuals working on sustainability issues are welcomed. Reuse is an important way to prevent still usable items from ending up in our landfills and save money on disposal costs. Reuse also has other far reaching environmental and community benefits. So come and take advantage of this great opportunity to pass on treasures to others, and benefit from the advertising and exposure you wouldn’t otherwise get with a garage sale at home! To reserve your space or for more information please call 786-5453 or visit www.co.thurston.wa.us/fair.

The Thurston County Fair’s Secondhand Safari Garage Sale and Reuse Fair happens twice a year, the first Saturday in May and the first Saturday in October. The Fair partners with Solid Waste, Pacific Disposal and the Goodwill for this event. We have over 100 vendor spaces available and average over 3,000 individuals who attend this event.

Antique ApprAiSAlS At tHe FAirBring your treasures to the fair and have them verbally appraised by a professional. On Friday from 4-7pm, you can find out just how valuable that whatzit of great-grandmas is worth. Costing $5 per item, you can have three items appraised at a time. If you want to have more appraised, you can - just get back in line. The event will happen on the grassy area on the east side of Heritage Hall. Buy your tickets at the appraisal site. It’s first come, first served so don’t delay. Keep in mind, however, that the fair cannot be responsible for storing items while you see the fair before or afterwards, so plan to put your treasures back in the car once your valuation is over. And please – no weapons of any kind to be appraised.
