FMD TCP Core
Clerkship Senior
Clerkship
MDCM
A 4-year, 200+ credit program with the following components:
• Fundamentals of Medicine & Dentistry (18 months)
• Transition to Clinical Practice (6 months)
• Core Clerkship (12 months)
• Senior Clerkship (12 months)
With a series of themes running through all 4 years.
McGill’s new MDCM curriculum will build on the excellences of the past and transform the teaching methodology, content and context to train the physicians of the future to respond the needs of society and to adapt to the technological and scientific revolution of the 21st century. Key features:
Integrative
Longitudinal
Early patient interaction
Socially accountable
Student-centred
Cumulative
The curriculum is based on a set of fundamental premises:
The basic sciences and scientific
methodology are fundamental pillars of
medical knowledge.
A physician fulfills two roles in service to
the patient: that of a professional and of a
healer. This is referred to as
‘physicianship’.
Physicianship; Family medicine longitudinal experience; Public health; Evidence-based medicine; Research; Inter-professionalism; Student Wellness and Career Advising; Diversity; Indigenous Health; Patient Safety; Ethics & Law; Emphasis on community-based care
“The human body reacts to an infinite number of insults in a finite number of ways. By identifying all of these ways, the domain of medical knowledge can be defined in a comprehensive manner.” (Mandin 2003) The MCC Clinical Presentations (120) attempt
to capture all the reasons patients visit doctors. The MD, CM program should equip every
graduate with the knowledge and skills to handle these CP’s.
CPs are a vehicle through which applied scientific concepts are taught.
Preparing students for clerkship:
•Universal precautions (protecting patients and
themselves);
•Minor procedural skills
•Differential Diagnosis
• Increased practical application of clinical method
(interview/physical examination on patients)
•No patient responsibility
Continue to develop differential diagnosis
Patient management (approach to treatment
of common diseases)
Increased patient responsibility (as part of
healthcare team)
Exposure to specialties requiring an
advanced knowledge base (e.g., geriatrics,
emergency, surgery).
