Duration of study Duration of study The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is normally offered on a part-time basis, over the recommended period of fifteen weeks. Where offered Where offered The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety will normally be offered at the Chester campus. Assessment Assessment Students are assessed with written examinations for each of the two taught units. A unit certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. A certificate award parchment is issued on completion of the two units and a practical assessment.

Management of Health and SafetyManagement of Health and SafetyThis module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop awareness of risks and hazards in the working environment. Specifi cally, students will develop awareness of the structures, processes and procedures for the identifi cation and management of health and safety in the workplace setting. Additionally, students will consider the impact of health and safety policy on the provision of a healthy working environment.

Controlling Workplace HazardsControlling Workplace HazardsThis module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to gain an understanding of the major risks to health in the working environment. Specifi cally, students will develop an in-depth knowledge of the processes for the identifi cation and control of common occupational hazards.

Certifi cate InformationCertifi cate InformationThe University aims to off er qualifi cations that prepare students to develop the qualities necessary to be eff ective within their own professional area relevant to the practice of Occupational Health and Safety. The NEBOSH National General Certifi cate in Occupational Health and Safety is a globally recognised health and safety qualifi cation that is held by more then 1,000,000 people in the UK and world-wide. It covers the main legal requirements for safety in the UK, a range of workplace hazards, and methods of control. Many people take the NEBOSH Certifi cate as a fi rst step on a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview in health and safety, and is a sound basis for further professional study.

Rationale for Developing the CourseRationale for Developing the CourseAwareness of risks and hazards in the working environment is an essential skill for health and safety practitioners. The NEBOSH Certifi cate is accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) for associate membership. This certifi cate would appeal to managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The Certifi cate syllabus is based on the Employment National Training Organisation (ENTO) standards. These are reviewed regularly to keep up with developments in the workplace and in legislation.
