Introduction

Complete, accurate and user-friendly plant documentation is essen-tial for proper operation and maintenance of a complex electrical plant such as a FACTS plant. Proper plant documentation is also important for the manufacturing, installation, testing and commis-sioning phases of a project prior to the hand-over of the plant to the customer.

In order to support all of these different, and in some cases contra-dictory uses for the plant documentation, ABB places the technical process in the center. For each of the main types of documentation, such as system design, electrical, software and mechanical/civil design, the objective of the documentation is to provide a consis-tent, easily understood description of the plant and its fundamental elements, both from a functional and a constructional viewpoint.

The plant documentation delivered by ABB complies with interna-tional IEC and ISO standards.

The key to understanding and using the plant documentation is to fully understand the item designation and document numbering systems used by ABB. The item designation is the link between a physical or functional part of the plant and the plant documentation, as well as a link between documents. The item designation system follows IEC 1346-1.

The document numbering system, which provides cross-references between related items and functions, provides a second method to locate information within the plant documentation.

This section of the plant documentation provides overall system related information such as overall system descriptions, single line diagrams, block diagrams, plant circuit diagrams , software docu-mentation, fault tracing and preventive maintenance instructions.

Highlights

• Operation, Plant Overview and Fault Tracing describes how to operate the plant, described in the Plant Overview and how to use the tools for fault tracing

• Plant Circuit Diagram shows the plant from the electrical point of view

• Plant Cable and Interconnection Documents show how the components are connected to each other

Design Documents

Conceptual Civil Design

This section of the plant documentation includes the system design reports that are prepared during the course of the project. The Main Component Design report is the most important document in this section and is always included. Examples of other reports that might be included in this section are:

• Control Strategy

• Insulation Coordination Study

• Thyristor Valve Design and Protection Report

In some cases the customer may require special system design stu-dies and/or reports. In order for ABB to be able to make allowances for the time and costs of preparing these technical reports, the requirements must be clearly described in the customer specifica-tion. For the purpose of clarity ABB will include in the tender a description of the additional technical reports to be provided.

The level of documentation supplied to customer for mechanical and civil design is dependent upon what is purchased. If the custo-mer is responsible for the civil work, then the supporting concep-tual civil design documentation provided by ABB will be sufficient to support the customer’s detailed civil design.

If the contract includes civil work then ABB will perform the detailed civil design. This documentation will be used by the civil design contractor, and will be submitted to the end customer at the completion of the project.

These documents describe the civil design of the site and include:

• Foundation plans

• Foundation data

• Cable trench/Conduit plans

• Civil design information (building)

• Heating and ventilation data

These documents describe the physical design of the site and include:

• Branch drawings

• Grounding layout

• General installation instructions

Documentation

The inspection and test plans (ITP) are specifying documents for the inspections and tests to be performed after manufacturing by the equipment suppliers.

The ITP’s provided with the plant documentation include factory acceptance test from external equipment suppliers of main circuit equipment, control and protection, and auxiliary systems, as well as ITP’s for installation and commissioning at site.

These documents provide a record of the inspections and tests, performed during the installation and the commissioning at site and include:

• Civil Work Inspection

• Installation Work Inspection

• Commissioning Test Reports

Any additional plant documentation specified by the customer will be included in additional binder and/or electronic files in an appro-priate part of the standard plant documentation.

If the customer has clearly defined the additional documentation requirements in the plant specification, then this documentation will be included in the tender price. Otherwise, there will be additional costs for supplying plant documentation, which is not described in this brochure. Routine Test Records and Type Test Records are two examples of documents that are not normally included in the standard ABB plant documentation unless this requirement is clearly indicated prior to tender submittal.

The item designation system follows the IEC 750 standard. A complete item designation consists of three blocks:

Block l identifies the functional systems of the plant. Letter codes are freely chosen to fit the terminology with which the customer is acquainted. The following examples show common functional systems for FACTS plants.

In practice, item designations are built up from a combination of block 1 and block 3 letter codes, i.e. functional oriented item designations or from block 2 letter codes, i.e. location oriented item designations.

As indicated in examples 1 and 2 above, the blocks are divided into groups. As group separator a period is used. A group designation following another group designation indicates that the second item is a sub-division of the first item.

The document numbering system is a second navigation tool for the plant documentation. Within a specific document page numbers are used to give cross references to related items and functions. Signal names, when provided, can also be useful information when searching connections on other pages within a specific document. The example below shows how to find the physical parts related to a specific signal in the protection function ( TCR1 0/C TR) in =OVER CURRENT PROTECTION TRIP:

The plant circuit diagram shows further detail of the control, protection and auxiliary circuits in the plant. The diagram contains all item designations and terminal markings for study of the func-tion, fault tracing etc. For some complex functions and for third party deliveries, references are given to equipment circuit diagrams.

An interface diagram showing the signal interface between the supplier and the customer may also be included in the plant circuit diagram.

Cable Documents The cable documents are in the form of cable tables and intercon-nection tables with all connections sorted in alpha-numeric order with regard to item designations. The cable documents are automa-tically generated from the engineering CAD system.

Electrical Circuit Diagram An equipment circuit diagram shows the functional units built up of co-operating components. A dash-dotted boundary frame indicates the limit of each functional unit. All elements in the components, which form the functional unit, are included in this boundary frame.

Cabinet Documents The Cabinet documents are produced by the manufacturer and consist of:

• Assembly drawings; showing the mechanical assembly and location of the various components, including terminals.

• List of apparatus; specifying all electrical items in the cabinet.

• Wiring tables; with all internal connections sorted in alpha- numeric order with regard to item designations. The wiring tables are automatically generated from the engineering CAD system, and are used solely in the manufacturing process.

The application software for the ABB control and protection system for FACTS plants is produced using a fully graphical code-genera-ting tool called HiDraw.

The programming for a specific project is performed using a simple pick, drag and place method with well-proven functions that are available in a comprehensive library.

The computer pictures that are provided in the Human Machine Interface (HMI) for a FACTS Plant are probably the most impor-tant part of the plant documentation. For each project ABB Custom Design the HMI screens to show the relevant single-line arrang-ement, settings, alarm and event lists, and other plant information. Specific details of the HMI to be supplied are normally presented in the tender descriptions.

The program diagram is the key to the software documentation and shows detailed programs with graphical symbols. The software code is automatically generated from the program diagrams and code library once the programmer completes a programming task or subtask

Tasks and Subtasks Each page from the bottom level (most detail) of the Program Diagram shows the programming logic of a task or subtask. The logical functions are taken from a comprehensive library. If a new function is needed the programmer designs a new page with blocks and links it to other pages with name references.

The conceptual civil design for the control building shows room arrangements, loads, room heights, and openings for bushings, con-duits, etc. Depending upon the scope of works for the project, the conceptual design is used by either the customer or ABB for the preparation of the detailed civil design for the building.
