THE EDITOR

It’s 2014 and FACT is on the way up! We’ve got your

social calendar, and so much more, covered for January…

I hope you’ve all had a fabulous festive season (and your pockets, or your waistline, wasn’t hit too hard!). With a new year comes new goals, a fresh start and renewed motivation, and that’s what we’re doing with FACT in 2014. We head into January with an exciting announcement to make - FACT will be expanding with a great team and yours truly at the helm - stay tuned for what’s coming up! This means, not only, a thrilling start to the year for the magazine, but a bittersweet farewell, to Bahrain, for myself too. It has been an incredible seven months working on, undoubtedly, one of the best magazines on the island. I’m forever grateful to the fantastic team, the lovely people I’ve met through work and socialising, but, most of all, to YOU, FACT’s loyal readers and followers – you’ve made the all-nighters, the countless takeaways, and the hundreds of Facebook posts and tweets, really worthwhile! Before I sign out, let’s take a look at what’s in store for Jan in Bahrain. This month there’s everything from the Bahrain International Air Show (p20), the Autumn Fair (p22), the annual Bahraini Farmers Market (p14), and a number of great arts festivals too (p24). To top that off we’re looking forward to the photography exhibition ‘Inside India’ and have all the details on p36. Anyone looking to make those dreaded New Year resolutions (or those in need of a little TLC) turn to p31 where FACT has you covered from health, fitness, and relaxation. Aside from that, FACT is looking to

“New Year, New Beginnings”

continue supporting all events, parties and cultural activity on the island to make sure that 2014 is as adventurous and action-packed, as possible, for you all! I’m passing the reigns, now, to the lovely Apple Sharma, who will take over the hot seat as Editor of FACT Bahrain from here forth… I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did!

Hello, lovely readers! I would like to take this opportunity to not only say a big thank you to Shabana for flying the flag for FACT for the past seven months, but also to introduce myself as the new editor of FACT. I am indeed very excited to be taking on this challenging and motivating role, and to be working along with the entire FACT team (a very talented and eccentric bunch!) I look forward to continue bringing to all you wonderful readers the latest news, events and happenings of this beautiful island (or an archipelago to be exact ;-)) that I have called home for the past eight years! I sit here with bated breath and cannot wait to bring you our exciting February Valentine issue, so watch this space…

An apple a day keeps the doctor away - so the saying goes! But, we all know that in most of Bahrain’s major supermarkets, fruit and vegetable is quite overpriced (BD3 for Iceberg lettuce – what?!). Whether it’s because the big supermarkets charge a premium, as many like to do their shopping in one place rather than roam the island for one item at a time, or because of the import charges – the further oranges (and any other food for that matter!) travels, the more expensive it gets.

So, we hear you ask, how do you keep stocked up on fresh fruit and veg for that all-important healthy lifestyle? Simple. The Bahraini Farmers Market! It’s a great option for those living in and around the Budaiya area, bringing together fresh local produce from farms all over Bahrain.

Set in the idyllic Budaiya Garden, this is more than just a place to take a shopping trip; it makes for a great day out

Get your five-a-day now as the Bahraini Farmers Market is back for those looking

to boost their health, save some dinars, and support the local economy…

too. You can pick up home grown produce at local (code for a LOT cheaper than supermarkets) prices, ranging from lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, and herbs and spices. By making a purchase you’re not only bagging fresh foods, you’re supporting many low-income Bahrainis as well.

It’s organised by the National Initiative for Agricultural Development and Marine Resources, and this year 30 Bahraini farmers are participating in the market, until the end of May.

You’ll also find vendors selling traditional snacks, foodstuff and beverages so, get the family together, and head down to the Bahraini Farmers Market for a unique (and healthy) shopping experience.

GO: The Bahraini Farmers Market takes place every

Saturday from 8am to 12pm at Budaiya

Garden, until the end of May.

CHECK IT OUT

Fact FindsThe Butcher Shop

& Grill ’s Tasty New MenuDiscover more of Bahrain with FACT Finds – every month we’ll bring you our

favourite eatery, activity or interesting find from around the island.

We all love The Butcher Shop & Grill for it’s juicy steaks, but the restaurant is stepping it up a notch with some fabulous food additions to its already great menu.

The eatery is renowned for its home-cooked-style grub, and, more importantly, the great value for which you can dine there – so it was only a matter of time before the Master Butchers behind the scenes came up with more yummy culinary creations.

For meat-eaters, there are new treats in store, and for seafood or veggie lovers there’s a whole array of mouth-watering dishes to choose from.

Some of the standout mains, for us, include Prawn Towers – prawns and vegetables wrapped in a light pastry fried to golden brown (simply delicious!); Chicken Coxinha – deep fried chicken coxinhas with a special filling served

with an orange aioli mayonnaise; and the mighty Espetada – a combination of marinated beef cubes served on a hanging skewer with garlic butter & potatoes (dare you to eat that with a hangover!).

Now, let’s talk mussels, one kilo of mussels that is! The generous Mussel Pot is an absolute must-try off the new menu; it’s delectable goodness at its best, and a dish that will definitely be a conversation starter at any table. The mussels are steamed to order in a light sauce of garlic, butter and a dash of cream served with garlic bread – so.so.tasty!

We also tucked into the roast duck, lamb shank, and veal tenderloin – again, each was generously portioned, and the

meat cooked perfectly – but the real heroes on the plate were the different sauces used in each one. The plum sauce for the duck, the truffle sauce for the veal, and the smooth gravy poured over the lamb shank – all made these hearty drop-off-the-bone dishes exquisitely yum!

And don’t hesitate to ask the helpful staff for any recommendations or details on the ingredients used; they’re knowledgeable and passionate about the food, which makes your dining experience all the more enjoyable.

The Butcher Shop & Grill prides itself on quality, comfort and value, and with this selection of delicious new food, we’re sure it’s going to be a serious lunch or dinnertime contender that is definitely worth your money and time.

Don’t believe us… well, then you should go and see for yourself !

GO: Try the new menu at The Butcher Shop & Grill in Bahrain City Centre Mall.

Fair FrenzyFashion, food, and all sorts of unique goodies, you can pick up exciting products at one of the island’s biggest shopping fairs this month…

Hungry shoppers pay attention! Though slightly confusing with the seasons, one of Bahrain’s largest exhibitions is taking place this month – the Autumn Fair - an absolute haven for the bargain hunters amongst us. Held under the patronage of the Bahrain Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the annual consumer products expo will see Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre (BIECC) transformed into a 14,800sqm labyrinth of stalls, shops, and vendors, coming to trade their goods from far and wide for the people of Bahrain. More than 750 exhibitors from 21 countries, including China, Egypt, Kuwait, Turkey, Syria, UAE and Pakistan, will set up with thousands of products, from colourful clothes bazaars, to amazing antiques, fabulous furniture, and great techie gadgets and toys, for the nine-day event. And shopping is not the only thing you’ll find here. There’s an outdoor children’s play area, a live band and costume characters providing entertainment throughout. Mohammed Ebrahim, Arabian Exhibition Management’s project manager, says, “The Autumn Fair is now in its 25th successful year. The show is full to capacity and we are looking forward in all confidence to another hugely enjoyable and successful event.

“The sheer number of exhibitors means that prices at the Autumn Fair can be competitive. There are potential savings on new to market products and a host of regular visitor favourites.”Local companies will also be doing the island proud, with 121 Bahraini businesses taking part. There’s guaranteed to be a rumble for the best products, because, let’s face it, who in Bahrain doesn’t like bargains? We’ll be there – you should definitely check it out too!

GO: Entry to the Autumn Fair 2014 is 700 fils. Children under the age of 5 years will be

admitted free of charge. The exhibition will open daily from 21 to 29 January. Ladies only mornings will be held on 26 and 27 January.

As renowned French photographer Marc Riboud says, “Taking pictures is savouring life intensely, every hundredth of a second”, and with that in find, four top Bahrain-based photographers set out to capture the true meaning of this saying in the form of powerful pictures. ‘Inside India’, taking place in Bin Mattar House, Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research, is a collection of striking images by photographers Haya Al Khalifa, Rasha Yousif, Saji Antony and Stephanie Ravel. Their photographic journey explores the captivating landscapes and intriguing people and traditions, alongside vibrant colours and basic shades, through constant movement and still life – all representing the characteristics of India. The techniques that were used by the four photographers differ from one another and yet manage to bring the imprints to life. Charged with emotions of pure admiration of what is revealed before the eye, torn between the obvious beauty, pureness and hardship of life in an exotic environment, these pictures will take you on a trip through the heart of India, that is not to be forgotten.

Haya Al Khalifa

Haya headed to rural Rajasthan to bring this series of photographs to Bahrain. Born in Bahrain in 1979, her passion for photography began at the age of 14 in high school. Here, in the Shimmering Sands environmental portraiture series Haya uses studio lighting outdoors and in the natural environment of her subjects to give the viewer an authentic representation of their lives whilst creating a timeless fairytale quality in the narrative. In recent years Haya has transitioned from casual photographer to aspiring artist.

GO: ‘Inside India’ will run from January 21 at

7pm to coincide with the National

Day of India celebrations. For

The four adventurous photographers set out to venture beyond the obvious interpretation of life style aiming to reveal what is deeply imprinted in a people so rich in soul as they are in colours.

Rasha YousifFACT spoke to Rasha back in February last year when she was fairly new to the photography scene. She told us, “You can tell many stories in a single photo if it captures the emotions at the perfect time in the perfect surroundings.” And this she has managed to do with her images for ‘Inside India’. Born and raised in Muharraq, Bahrain, Rasha is passionate about documentary and travel photography focusing on culture, architecture and traditional ways of living. Capturing moving objects or vibrant colours is what keeps her photos alive.

Saji AntonySaji Antony was born in Kerala, India and has been living in Bahrain for 20 years. His inspiring photography focuses on capturing men at work in their natural environment. The self taught photographer works on the island as a systems analyst, and started serious photography in 2009. Since then he has taken part in three group exhibitions in the Kingdom, and his work has been featured in various Indian publications, with Photography Magazine and Nikon India nominating him for Photographer of the year in 2010.

Stephanie RavelBorn in France, Stephanie Ravel has lived in several countries including India before establishing herself in Bahrain. She has written about photography for the regional cultural magazine ‘L’Agenda’ and she works at the Academic Media Centre of the University of Bahrain. Stephanie is currently pursuing a Masters in Photojournalism with the University of Arts London, and has produced great photography projects and portfolios as part of that. We’re very intrigued to see hers, and the other material, in ‘Inside India’.

Intaglio Printmaking WorkshopThis is the ideal for art professionals,

A spirited album that carries a revelatory beat throughout, High Hopes is scorched with the sounds of guitar

strings bringing the full fire of modern rock. But, the track list does sound familiar with several of them being covers – however, Bruce and the E Street band illustrate the artistry, poetry and passion in every note with tracks like Heaven’s Wall, Dream Baby Dream, and Harry’s Place, being as live and immediate as it gets - just the way a good rock album should be.

We had high expectations from Jake Bugg, and though there are a few tracks

on Shangri La that we might hit replay on, much of the album comes off as another run of the mill record from a quirky Oasis-charged singer. Bugg has worked with Rick Rubin and Iain Archer, along with Chad Smith from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, on the drums, including the single Broken. It seems that even an all-star cast couldn’t quite make Shangri La live up to the artist’s real potential.

The author of Eat, Pray, Love gives a welcomed nod to fiction once more, and her matchless voice takes readers into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Set in the 1800s, this novel follows the fortunes of the incredible Whittaker family. The story here, largely, centres on Henry’s remarkable daughter who inherits his brains and money. Alma is a talented botanist who falls in love with Ambrose Pike, an artist who is somewhat her opposite; she’s a clear-minded scientist, he’s a utopian artist – but the two’s curiosity to understand the mechanisms behind life and all in this world brings them together. Gilbert’s bold, deep, and wise tale is gloriously filled with desire, ambition and thirst for knowledge. It will capture your heart and mind in a truly spellbinding way.

Those of you who remember watching the Mike Tyson-Evander Holyfield match at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas on July 28 1997, will know why it’s now commonly called ‘the Bite Fight’. Here, renowned sports columnist George Willis details what triggered Tyson to attack and the panic that engulfed the MGM in the aftermath. More importantly, 15 years on, this book enlightens readers on how that night changed, and taught both boxers. Has the ‘Bite Fight’ left its marks?

So far, his comeback singles Monster, Survival, and Berzerk have all proved EXACTLY why this rapper is still, undoubtedly, at the top of his game. Packed with punchy rap rock, and itchy turntablism (reminiscent of early Beastie Boys and the pumping sounds of Run DMC), as well as the usual, if not more powerful, verbal Molotov cocktails that the rapper is renowned for. Yes, there’s an intense speed flow in tracks like Rap God, and he does trip up on bouts of homophobia and sexism, but on the opposite end of the spectrum are several songs such as Bad Guy, MM2 and Rhyme on Reason that highlight why Eminem continues to earn praise for his lyrical prowess. Let’s hope this isn’t the rapper’s last album.

What’s it about:Surly (Will Arnett) is an independent squirrel who is banished from his park and forced to survive in the city. As with any adventure animation, the leading character MUST solve a problem to redeem themselves, or embark on some sort of quest... Well, here, lucky for Surly, he stumbles on the one thing that may be able to save his life, and the rest of the park community, as winter approaches - Maury’s Nut Store. This is worth a watch, solely, just to hear Liam Neeson’s voice through an animated Raccoon (who wouldn’t pay for THAT?).

character expectations?

Answer the following question:

Parts of the film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit were filmed in which European country?

E-mail answers to: [email protected]

What’s it about:Fast-talking security guard Ben (Kevin Hart) proposes to a cop’s sister - a rookie mistake! When his brother-in-law to be, James (Ice Cube) finds out, Ben is made to go on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta in order to prove himself worthy of marrying Angela, James’ sister. This is another crowd-pleasing comedy from Tim Story with the can’t-miss pairing of Ice Cube and Kevin Hart at the helm - if you’re a fan of the Soul Plane, or any of the Friday projects then this movie guarantees big laughs.

Ride AlongDirector: Tim StoryCast: Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Tika Sumpter, John Leguizamo

Jack Ryan: Shadow RecruitDirector: Kenneth BranaghCast: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley, Gemma Chan

What’s it about:Jack Ryan, is a young stockbroker working for a billionaire in Moscow before joining the CIA as a covert analyst. Upon discovering a Russian plot to crash the U.S. Economy with a terrorist attack, Jack is thrust into a dangerous position after being framed for a terrorist plot, and, his wife is kidnapped by the enemy. He now has the multiple task of stopping the plot, saving his wife, and clearing his name (how’s that for a crime-thriller?)

Why it’s worth watching? This is the fifth film in the Jack Ryan series, but let’s be honest, it’s quite hard to remember its predecessors without consulting Google. So, maybe, it’s a good thing that this reboot departs from the previous installments, being based on an original story, rather than an adaptation of a particular Tom Clancy novel (the man who created the character of Jack Ryan). One thing’s for sure, when you place the new Captain Kirk as the new Jack Ryan (Chris Pine), it’s safe to say that Tom Clancy’s character is in good hands, even more so knowing that behind the camera is Kenneth Branagh, who successfully managed to combine several exciting genres in the blockbuster Thor. Is it going to be a film that’ll make your top movies of all time list? Probably not. But, the fact that parts of it was actually filmed in Russia, and that it contains a thrilling plot, with an ever-attractive leading man, there’s a great chance that you’ll get almost two hours of much-needed excitement and escapism - and definitely your money’s worth.

SONY PLAYSTATION 4With the New Year comes a brand

spanking new treat for all you gaming enthusiasts out there!

The big question on every gamer’s mind is to Xbox One or to PS4? If the big buzz in the market is anything to go by, it seems that Sony has finally redeemed itself with the recent launch of the PlayStation4, claiming an overall performance 10 times that of the PS3.

Aesthetically, it races way ahead of the Xbox One with its svelte, smooth, futuristic look and stunning graphics performance. Like the Xbox One, it has a half-matte, half-gloss face divided by a power line that glows blue on booting.

From the get go, it ’s a dream console for the next-gen gaming

warrior. It ’s smaller and sleeker - almost half the size and weight of the Xbox One. It is easier to set up, with a slim compact body (slightly smaller than the PS3 Slim) and looks great underneath or next to the telly. Compared to the bulky Xbox One, PS4 has an internal power supply, and is fuss-free with all vents and most of the ports tucked neatly at the back.

In spite of a higher power packed x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, eight-core processor, backed by 8GB of GDDR5

RAM, and a 500GB mechanical hard drive, the console is much quieter than other machines.

The PS4’s DualShock 4 wireless controller is slightly bigger and sturdier than its predecessor and a worthy rival to the Xbox One Pad.

Not only does the PS4 bring games and films into your living rooms, it also lets you connect to your friends and interact with other online gamers through the PlayStaion Network. It also allows all you hard-core gamers to boast of your big gaming moments by sharing them on Twitter and Facebook.

Cheaper than the Xbox One, the PS4’s awesomeness ticks all the right boxes and is clearly a firm favourite!

Chevrolet Impala2014

Page 50: FACT Bahrain January 2014

fact magazine50.

Chevrolet’s full-size sedan, the Impala, is now in its 10th generation, the first model being released 55 years ago. The new model is aesthetically very different to the previous generation. Chevrolet have obviously been paying attention to the finer design details which add up to create something very different than previous generation models. The Impala now looks more like one of its European counterparts which could help transform it into a budget rival to the sedan offerings from BMW, Audi and Mercedes.

ISLAND RIDES

lInitially, the Impala was very impressive in terms of ride quality; there was no noticeable wind/tyre noise and the engine was also very quiet under anything but full throttle. These attributes combined to provide a very relaxing cruiser, which for a full-size sedan is great as this is its main purpose. Digging a little deeper, I found that the controls were all relatively simple and well laid out and there had been a definite overhaul of the interior which now feels quite special. The seats were very comfortable and the materials used in the cabin are of a generally high quality.

For such a large car a V6 engine may seem insufficient, especially without any help from forced induction; however the gearbox and engine in the Chevy are well matched and provide enough shove

Page 51: FACT Bahrain January 2014

ISLAND RIDES

for it to be fairly quick. One noticeable driving aspect of the car is that it doesn’t feel especially front wheel drive. Unless you are really pushing the car through a corner, it actually has quite a neutral balance, which is impressive for such a large car. The steering is predictably light as it is electronically assisted, however, it is easy to use.

The V6 engine is actually quite a surprise; it’s not particularly advanced, yet it has significant low to mid-range torque for a naturally aspirated engine and sounds smooth yet quite intoxicating under hard acceleration. Although the Impala is a fairly heavy car, the engine never feels like it’s struggling to deal with the weight, it actually spins up quite freely in the first three gears, by which time you are close to hitting the national speed limit so it’s not lacking in firepower.

By utilising higher quality

materials, the cabin shows a notable

improvement over previous generation

models.

ISLAND RIDES

The Outlander is Mitsubishi’s crossover offering. It currently utilises a chassis that does service in no less than 15 other cars, one being the Racing Lancer (used for the Dakar rally in 2009). It is quite a conservatively styled car by comparison with some of its rivals, although the (actually rather pleasant) copper colour of

attempting to recreate them; plastics have gotten better, seats more comfortable, equipment more generous and overall they are just of a much higher quality. The Outlander is no exception, it has a functional yet stylish interior that ergonomically is very good; the controls for everything are easily within reach and unlike so many modern cars, do not distract your attention from the road.

The test car provided by Mitsubishi had the 3.0 V6 engine with their MIVEC variable valve timing technology. This really boosts the power and torque lower down in the rev range, which is a big help as the engine is naturally aspirated. Continuing to use V6’s in this age of downsizing and turbocharging engines is quite a bold but welcome move; V6’s are always more aurally pleasing than

mItsubIshI outlander“Mitsubishi’s latest Outlander has been refreshed with cleaner styling, interior and engines.”

the test car definitely added some visual impact.

The interiors of Japanese cars have often received considerable criticism (and quite rightly too, some older Japanese cars were quite nasty inside), however in the last decade or so, they appear to have been studying German car interiors and

four-cylinders and it gives the Outlander a more upmarket and expensive feel.

The styling of this new generation Outlander is much more palatable than some of the older models, which at times could be a bit too outlandish (pun intended!), however this new model is a lot more restrained, especially from the front.

The Outlander is a capable crossover; it is spacious, easy to drive and thanks to the drivetrain combination, easy to drive on the road yet capable off it thanks to the four-wheel drive mode.

Tip: Keep an Eye OutKeep all the computers in a place where the

whole family can see and use them. Keep them out of bedrooms and private lounges. Make sure

your children know a parent can join them in their online activity at any time – it will keep them

away from risky internet sites and help you to prevent exposure to harm.

Tip: Ban BullyingThings can escalate from behind a keyboard very easily, so, teach your children to avoid

name-calling, being confrontational with others, and causing online fights. If they get into

arguments online, monitor the situation and give them guidance on how to resolve the situation

positively and to just ‘walk away’.

What is SafeSurf? An informative tutorial designed to help parents and carers make the most of the online world, with a focus on being aware of the dangers

their children could face online.

Tutorial Benefits? The SafeSurf team carried out extensive

research, to produce a tutorial to help fami-lies to learn how new technologies can be

enjoyed safely and responsibly.

What You Learn? How children interact online and in social media – the tutorial creates awareness of how children use mobiles and laptops to

learn, play and socialise through the internet.

Tip: Online Social Scene

Children below the age of 13 are not allowed to register for social networking sites, such as Facebook and MySpace. If they do, they must

have lied about their age to access the website. Therefore, it’s useful to have a talk about the

dangers on such social sites.

Cyber bullying, online predators, harmful search words... just some of the things that can lead to a bad online user experience.

Now, a new pioneering initiative in Bahrain - SafeSurf - is leading the way to create awarness about the dangers of being online. There is more than just a computer

virus that parents and carers should be in-the-know about and SafeSurf is kick-starting the road to internet knowledge.

I was in the best hands. When we had filmed them, it was such a thrill.

Is it true that there are going to be alternative endings?Yes, it’s true. I wanted there to be another twist to the campaign, and so we’ve filmed two alternative endings for the story. Visitors to HM.com will be able to vote for their favourite ending, with the winning version being debuted during the Superbowl on February 2nd. I can’t wait to see which ending everyone around the world chooses to see!

Talk us through the new Spring range of your Bodywear collection. We’re introducing lots of new styles to the Bodywear collection at H&M which continue with a heritage feel. I love the new stripes on pieces like long-sleeve Henleys and vests. There are two different types of stripes, one with a very thin stripe that feels like an update on classic undergarments, and then a wider stripe that is more like our take on preppy sportswear. There’s also a new poloshirt shape, and a long-sleeved raglan top that’s got a playful large letter B on the back. It’s great to be taking these ideas from vintage pieces and making them feel fresh and contemporary.

What about the seasonless collection - is it still available?Yes absolutely. At the heart of my Bodywear range is a core collection of pieces which will always be available, no matter what season. I wanted to create a collection that men could come to rely on, and would be available to them at every H&M store that sells menswear, no matter where they are in the world.

What do you think about the reaction to your Bodywear collection?I’m overwhelmed by the reaction to my Bodywear collection at H&M. It’s been an immediate success from the moment we introduced it back in 2012. At the time it felt like something very new to create a bodywear range that was based around fit and cut rather than on branding. It’s been so satisfying that men around the world have responded so enthusiastically to the collection. It shows that it was the right decision to take, and that men are really looking for new classics to be in their wardrobe.

What’s next for David Beckham Bodywear? One of the most enjoyable parts of creating the collection is seeing what else can be included in our idea of bodywear. For instance, I love the loungewear pieces that are in the range, and which I love to wear when I’m relaxing at home. We think long and hard before we make any additions to the range, because we want everything that we do to be just right. We have a really exciting new addition to the collection coming this summer which I can’t wait to tell you about!

Can you tell us about your new campaign for your David Beckham Bodywear range at H&M?I had such a great time filming last year’s campaign with Guy Ritchie that I wanted to push myself this time to see what more I could do. I have always loved the films of Nicolas Winding Refn, particularly Drive and Only God Forgives, and so I was thrilled when he agreed to direct my new campaign. From the beginning I asked him to come up with an action filled story that also had a great sense of humour, in which I could also do all my own stunts.

What is it that you like about Nicolas Winding Refn? His films are so incredibly tense and are full of action, yet they are also so stylish. I remember when Drive was first released, and everybody was talking about it. He manages to get so much packed into his films, and yet it all feels effortless. When it came to thinking who’d be perfect to shoot my next commercial, I knew he’d be right for the job.

Tell us the story in the commercial – what happens? The commercial is set in a photo studio in East London, where I’m shooting a Bodywear campaign. It’s on the top floor of a building, and during a break I step outside onto the roof to get some air. The door shuts, and I get locked out, on a roof, in just my briefs and vest. I have to do whatever it takes to get myself down from the roof.

What was it like doing all your own stunts?Nicholas and his team worked hard to create a storyline that allowed me to be in every single scene. I’ve learned so much about the work and preparation that goes into even the most straightforward stunt. It takes incredible dedication from a whole team to make it all look natural, while also being safe for everyone involved. When it came to filming the stunts, I was nervous, but I also knew

New Year, New Rooms

both helping you fall into a peaceful sleep. One of the things that guests

recommended is for Crowne Plaza to include an enhanced shower experience in their rooms as opposed to bath tubs – an area in which they have succeeded. The rain shower here has temperature control settings and even an anti-scalding switch, all incorporated into the practical bathroom.

Amenities in the room are great too – there is ample storage, two mini bars, a safe deposit box, and much more, encompassed into a lavish suite with a superb living and dining area too.

Overall, our stay at the Crowne Plaza was nothing short of perfect, and we can confidently say that the revamp of its new rooms has been well thought out to boost guest comforts to the highest expectations.

fast, and an added bonus is that the hotel will provide you with all the right wires to connect your device to the TV, if need be.

On to the beds – the sheets are soft, the pillows plump, and the body-hugging duvet is akin to what we can only imagine as sleeping on a cloud. The bed is incredibly comfortable and what we love is that the pillows are fluffed up to a great height, eliminating neck cramps in the morning (it’s the simple things that matter!).

Reading lights are flushed into the wall, perfectly placed for nighttime reading, and there are sockets well-placed around the room so you’re not confined to the desk to work on your laptop. However, we were impressed to find a Herman Miller, ergonomically-designed desk chair for extra support and comfort.

A great perk that is exclusive to Crowne Plaza hotels is the sleep advantage kit, which includes an aromatherapy-infused deep calm pillow spray and inhaler,

Crowne Plaza Bahrain has grown to become one of the most successful hotels on the island, with a loyal clientele that enjoy the property for its comfortable rooms, countless amenities, and, of course, superb dining options.

With this in mind, and after gathering useful feedback from its corporate clients, leisure travellers, and other guests, the Crowne Plaza has gone all out and renovated several rooms and suites with the aim of providing their visitors the utmost comfort.

We arrived on a Saturday night, and had the pleasure of staying in one of the suites. Upon entering the room it was slightly chilly, but to our (great) surprise, we were able to manage the temperature with controls that are conveniently placed by the bed. The a/c is super quiet, and the temperature is shown in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, perfect for overseas travellers who are accustomed to a particular reading.

Another lovely surprise was ‘The Hub’ unit – built into the wall, this is where you can connect all your techie gadgets and devices - ideal for business travellers who want to enjoy room comforts. The WiFi is

The Heart of DesignRenowned designer Julia Knight visited Bahrain, as her luxurious serveware will now be sold exclusively at Trousseau in Bahrain. FACT talks to the ‘Queen of the Craft’ to learn more about her wonderful home products…

Hi Julia! Tell us more about your vision?First what I think is important to know,

is that the heart of all of this is the sense of hospitality. That really resonates in this market as well. What I believe we all share is this desire to make people feel welcome, and well served, and well loved.

For me, when people come to my home, I always want to do the best for them. I use my best china, my best silver, my best cutlery, even for breakfast with the kids! So, to me, to be able to make that statement, even if all you’re serving is a bowl of strawberries, it’s a way of saying ‘you’re important me, you mean something to me, I took that extra effort to show you that’ - and that’s why I do what I do.

What keeps you excited about your products?I’m kind of about a little sparkle, a

little glamour, and a little luxury in our

everyday life. I make things that people feel comfortable with. So when I started designing I wanted things that had a practical aspect, but were still dressy and over the top. It’s been interesting because I have too many ideas to actually do and I don’t know where all of this came from. When I started it in my 40s - I didn’t even really know I was a designer. Now, I introduce a couple of hundred new things a year!

I’m inspired by nature so I guess what really excites me is that things are really hard to achieve - because to make something look like a flower that’s in metal - it’s hard. And when I get it right it’s like this zingy sparkly feeling.

Tell us a little bit about the craftsmanship? I chose India because they have the

longest history of metal crafting in the world, and because they really have the soul

of the artist. India’s really the only place in the world these things can be made, because it’s aluminium, and because the very special mother of pearl comes from the sea shells left near the beaches in Kerala and Goa. They’ve been doing metal crafting for over 500 years, and they’re also all about colour, so they just have a sense of what we do and that’s really wonderful!

What attracted you to start making your products available in Bahrain? It just made sense to me because the Middle Eastern culture is all about serving large quantities of food to everyone - it’s almost like I designed it for here! The Middle East was our first international market and now we’re in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

GO: Shop Julia Knight’s product range at Trousseau, on the 1st floor, in Al Aali Mall.

Julia says, “I feel like you can never get carried away, because more is

more (that’s kind of my motto). There’s no wrong

way to set up your table with our pieces

and that to me is really important.

MONSOON at Block 338

Page 70: FACT Bahrain January 2014

fact magazine70.

Hot off its win as both Favourite Far Eastern and Favourite Restaurant in Bahrain 2013, at the Citibank FACT Awards, Monsoon has well and truly set the standards for great food. Its menu is made up of Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Japanese, and Singaporean cuisine, making variety a top priority. FACT visits Monsoon to sample hospitality and dining at its best…

ON THE MENU

Upon entering Monsoon, the ambience whisks you away to a faraway place (well, definitely out of Adliya and the bustle of block 338!), and that’s down to the authentic Asian-infused décor, which also has a tavern feel, making the venue a perfect choice for both a casual and formal dining option.

As we’re a mix of meat-eaters and veggie-lovers, the menu is a real delight to choose from. For starters we order Siu Mai (Chinese) – traditional prawn and chicken dumpling, with spicy soy sauce; and Goi Cuon (Vietnamese) – fresh rolls with lettuce, bean sprouts, and mixed herbs, with pickled vegetables and dipping fish sauce.

We’re instantly drawn to the food because of all the vibrant colours on the plate – the presentation is impeccable yet effortless. The dim sum (Siu Mai) is simply delicious, steamed to perfection,

and complimented well by the spicy soy sauce. The Goi Cuon is beautifully fresh, packed with effervescent-looking crispy veg and herbs; again the taste is uplifted with the staple fish sauce.

Moving onto the mains… we opted for Crispy Chicken Salad (Singapore) – fried shredded crispy chicken, young mango, spring onion, red onion, coriander, sesame seed, sesame oil, fresh chilli, fish sauce and lime juice; Panang Chicken (Thai) – a rich, creamy red curry with coconut milk, garlic, roasted

peanuts and lime leaves; and Bun Noodle (Vietnamese) – vermicelli rice noodles with fresh herbs, bean sprouts, lettuce and crushed peanuts.

A standout here was the Crispy Chicken Salad – it was fresh, light, flavousome, and bursting with colour and different textures, from the crunchy chicken to the crisp onion – this is definitely a delectable dish.

The Panang curry had a great balance of flavour to tease your palate – the coconut milk gave it a smooth texture, while the lime leaves provided a zingy kick – not to mention the chicken was juicy and tender too!

Monsoon has a number of private dining areas, larger rooms for bigger parties, and a stunning outside area with a Pagoda-style set-up and water features. The theme and feeling of nature runs from outdoors to inside with the wooden furniture and water way adding to the Far East-Asian influence.

To put it simply, Monsoon ticked all the boxes – Food, check. Service, check. Atmosphere, check. All that’s left for you to do is take a visit and enjoy the same excellent dining experience, as we did, at this fabulous venue.

Sumptuous Servings at Sofitel ’s Friday Brunch

It has just been crowned Favourite Friday Brunch at the Citibank FACT Awards, so we went down to Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa to see what keeps the island’s foodies coming back

for its spectacular Friday Brunch offering…

If selection is what’s important to you when choosing a Friday Brunch then you might want to seriously consider the lavish buffet-style set up at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. It’s spread over three fabulous restaurants in the hotel; Fiamma, Saraya and Wok, each serving up different international cuisines including Italian, French, Arabic, and Far Eastern, with great live cooking stations too.

What strikes us immediately is the joyful ambience; the light shining in through the large windows, the stunning poolside view, and the groups of family and friends, as well as couples, engaged in conversation and tucking into the delicious food.

Our group of 10 is made to sit on one of the huge tables in Fiamma, with full view of the chef ’s preparing all the tasty treats

(needless to say, we jumped up when a fresh batch of our favourites were being prepped!).

Starters are plentiful, from simple salads, to fancy bruschetta, and even steamed dim sum. The bountiful spread continues with mains – from roasted duck, to authentic Italian pizza, and – what was undoubtedly one of the most flavoursome dishes – a handpicked stir-fry. Head to Wok where a table of the freshest ingredients awaits. We opted for the egg noodles with prawns, and various veggies, cooked in a fiery Indo Chinese Schezwan sauce – if you like spicy food, this will be right up your street!

When it comes to dessert, the Sofitel is in a completely different ball game; chocolate, strawberry, cakes, Arabic sweets, homemade ice cream, and other baked sweet treats fill up an entire section of Saraya. A

personal recommendation is the chocolate fountain – dip your favourite fruits in the smooth chocolate and munch away.

After we were full to the brim, we headed outside to the patio area, where the conversation flowed and the drinks continued to pour – all-in-all one of the best brunch experiences that the FACT team has had.

It’s safe to say that Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa has all the right ingredients for a memorable Friday Brunch; great food, tranquil atmosphere, and helpful staff. This is definitely somewhere you’ll want to spend four hours (or, in our case, the whole day!), on a Friday.

CHEF’S TABLE

If there’s one thing that Chef Choi Pha Chi values, it’s his childhood and the time spent with his family. After all, this is where his culinary journey began. “There was no such thing as an institute or food training back then,” he tells us. “My father used to cook for us at home - this is where I learned all the traditional Chinese dishes.”

That’s right, everything this Chef has learned came straight from his family’s kitchen (which was a delightful surprise!) and knowing that he has had no professional training meant that we were all too eager to try the food at Soie.

This month FACT dines at Soie in the Sheraton Hotel, which recently scooped the title of the isalnd’s Favourite Chinese Restaurant. We meet the chef behind the award-winning eatery…

CHEF CHOI PHA CHI

CHEF’S TABLE

The restaurant itself is serene with an intimate atmosphere and elegant décor that pays homage to the exotic menu that awaits customers.

First up on the plate was Sambal Prawn - a dish with a zing. Chef Choi and his team have concocted a spicy Sambal sauce, to which they add tomato, onion, corn flour, chicken stock and chicken powder. Add to this the wok-tossed prawns and you’re left with a perfect dish to accompany your sticky rice.

The prawns, coated in this wonderful sauce are packed full of flavour, highlighting the traditional home-cook that Chef Choi is proud to be. He tells us that this is the kind of cooking that keeps the already well-established clientele of diners coming back to Soie, “The Chinese community appreciate the authenticity.”

Next up is Hammour Black Pepper – cooked in a fusion of soy sauce, oyster sauce and black pepper, with sugar, sesame oil, red capsicum, onion, ginger, garlic, and corn flour. Again, the flavours explode, yet the fish remains fresh and well cooked. There are members of the team who aren’t so keen on hammour, but this dish certainly changed their minds.

Though Chef Choi didn’t follow the traditional academic route into the food and hospitality industry, he has

acquired decades of experience working as a professional cook in Germany, before arriving to Bahrain nine years ago.

He is graceful in the kitchen, treating every ingredient with purpose. And he’s happy to admit that depending on the customer, he can prepare food to satisfy all tastes. “We have to change a little bit here and there,” he says. “We’ve altered some things to cater to the tastes of our guests in Bahrain. “Mostly, they like it less salty. The Chinese love soya beans, for example, and, here, most people don’t really like a lot of soya beans – the same with fish sauce.”

We move onto the next dish – Scallops Mushroom. Cooking using a variety of mushroom; straw, fresh, and dry, mixed with carrot, snow peas, sugar, corn

flour, and chicken powder – we dare you to find scallops cooked more perfect than this! Soft and delicately presented in a large lettuce leaf and complimented by the mushrooms, this was by far everyone’s favourite dish on the table.

Last, but by no means least, came the Beef Pow Chow. And boy this was a strong contender for the scallops that went before. Tender beef fillet cooked with ginger, onion, spring onion, dry red chilli, vinegar, chilli paste, lemon grass (from Thailand, ooh fancy!), sugar, and corn flour. It was spicy, flavoursome and an absolutely delicious end to our dinner.

If it’s food frenzy, where the menu is exotic, authentic, yet cooked to suit your taste, the Soie is the place to experience Chinese cuisine. We’re confident that Chef Choi is a bona fide, homemade, and excellent master of the kitchen – just one of the many reasons this dining spot is worth a visit.

Fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, believes that a more back-to-basics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle…

Most of us are familiar with a new year’s resolution and most of us are familiar with them failing. In this month’s article I will give you some tools to make 2014 a success. I’m a little cynical when it comes to people making resolutions each January as history says they will be forgotten by February. Goal setting is very important and I have been doing it since I was a young child. “To run is not necessarily to arrive” is a Swahili proverb. Good things come to those who persist and remain patient. No, you cannot drop 6 dress sizes or belt buckles by February. The first piece of

advice I would give you is to plan them well and write them down. Break them down into health, fitness, family, work, education and investment. When I plan my own goals I utilise our three principles at tribal Fitness. Wero is a Maori word for challenge. Will your goals challenge you? Are they too easy or too difficult? Wero is a cry to take responsiblity for your goals. Only you can make them succeed or fail. Thokozela is a Zulu word for fun. A goal should be enjoyable and more importantly so should the process of achieving it. Your six goals are simply the tip of the iceberg. The process of how you will achieve your goals make up 90% of your notepad. Feabhas is a Gaelic word for improvement. Are your goals going to make you better or improve your life? How can you measure that? Finally, I’d like to share my own 2014 health and fitness goals with you. This makes me accountable to you!Fitness: Blue belt at Brazilian Jiujitsu (Reza’s Martial Arts) by November 28th 2014.Health: Walk 2 kilometres in the sunlight hours each day (joint mobility, posture, Vitamin D levels and stress-release).I wish you the best with your goals for 2014 and if you would like to send me yours to the email address below, I’d be happy to give you advice. Type up your goals neatly and read them every day! I wish you luck.

It is your wedding day! Most brides will only have one thing on their minds! How do I look? A wedding day is most likely to be one of the most treasured days in a bride’s life. Consequently, brides expect to look and feel their best. It is what a bride be worthy of. That is where a makeup artist can enter with the wand and add to the dazzle and stylishness of the wedding day.

Wedding makeup should simply improve the natural beauty of a woman and still look like the person once they have had the wedding makeup applied. Bridal hair and makeup should be simple, yet elegant. It is important t remember that the hair and makeup should not compete with the bride’s dress; rather the hair and makeup should complement the dress.

Today’s bridal makeup and hair is soft and restrained. The effect is sexier, less harsh. Hair can be worn down, flowing with loose curls and waves. The updo that once conquered the bridal hair scene has a much softer look as well. Today’s updo style is not sprayed, pinned, and tucked to hide every loose hair. The look is pinned and tousled, leaving it soft and stylish. The bridal hair is romantic.

Bridal makeup trends are soft and romantic to set off the hair and latest trends in bridal gowns and bridal hair. No longer do the lips have to be lined heavily and matte foundation with loose powder applied. While this is traditional, today’s bridal makeup is more radiant and natural. Today’s brides want to glow with elegance. Wear a flawless foundation as a basis. You can choose from liquid foundations or cream-based compacts. Even mineral powder makeup is great for wedding make-up because it take all day!

A bride must have a natural shine! Make sure you have a beautiful blush on the apples of your cheeks. pink or apricot blush color will suit most skin tones. Eyes also need to look beautiful. Use false eyelashes as part of your wedding makeup look. Give your lips a hint of shine or light color for a pretty pout! Kissing lips will naturally lead to breathtaking beauty on your big day.

Finally, wedding makeup to last all day! Here’s a tip - Brush a light translucent powder on areas of the face susceptible to shine. Today’s bride wants to show her beauty in a natural, sensual way. The makeup artist can provide the bride with confidence and easy elegance.

It’s been a while since I heard someone mention making a New Year resolution. Maybe it’s because people are realising more and more that today and tomorrow versus 2013 and 2014 as just about the same thing. As the year ticks over into a new one, we take the same self into the new year. We will have the same way of thinking, which will mean that our habits will tend to stay the same. Maybe this year, instead of deciding to quit smoking or eat better, we could decide to feel better inside. Once we feel better, better habits are likely to happen more naturally. Ok, so how do we accomplish this whole feel better inside thing? Taking time out to relax and destress may sound

New Year, Same You with a twist

kind of impossible amidst the hustle and bustle of life, but doing this is going to give you a boost of internal power to tackle life. Would you ever imagine driving your car on an empty tank? Of course not, because you know that it will not get you to your destination. Rest and relaxation serves as fuel as much as the food you eat. If you can make your rest and relaxation time some form of meditation then you will have something really powerful going. Talking about fuel, you can be pleasantly surprised how good it can feel to be in your body when you feel energised. Eat good food and give your body the best and it will serve in a way that will surpass your expectations into the New Year and beyond.

your fAVourite dining hotspots on the islAnd...

Ahaha, a difficult one for me, in order to answer objectively. Well, putting aside the

restaurants I am looking after (Bushido and Trader Vic’s), I really like a casual dinner

at Hash House, probably the best value for money with a license in Bahrain. I really like the upstairs smoking area of Cucina Italiana (despite being a non-smoker). Finally for a

romantic fine dining dinner, I would tend to favour Plums at the Ritz-Carlton.

tell us three things you enjoy the most About liVing in bAhrAin?What I like the most in Bahrain is the

people of Bahrain. Welcoming, genuine, caring, but also well-educated and

knowledgeable, Bahrainis make this country a great one to live in. There is also a good balance of work and social lifestyles, and everyone respects it, which creates a very peaceful environment to work and live in.

Finally, I see a great opportunity in the economic growth of the country too.

WhAt Are you most looking forWArd to for 2014 in bAhrAin?

I believe all businesses are looking for a stable and positive growth for 2014

and beyond, after the past three years of uncertainty. It seems a lot of activities are planned for the first 2 quarters of the year

and I do hope the same will take place after Ramadan. I am really excited and anxious

to see the F1 coming back, as well as seeing some of the new 5* hotels and premium

restaurants opening their doors.
