Ratherthanaddingontooneendoftheexistingstructure,GouldEvanswrappedanewreadingroomandterracottafacadearoundtheoldLawrencePublicLibrary.(CourtesyGouldEvans)

Consideredanaestheticandfunctionalfailurealmostsinceitsconstructionin1974,theoldpubliclibraryinLawrence,Kansas,wasoverdueforarenovationfourdecadeslater.GouldEvanschallengewastotransformthelowslungbrutalistbehemoth,apoorenvironmentalperformerlackingbothadequatedaylightingandasenseofconnectiontothecommunity,intoanasset.Thedesirewastotrytocomeupwithabuildingthatbasicallyreinventedthelibraryforthecommunity,saidvicepresidentSeanZaudke.Ratherthantackinganadditionontooneendoftheexistingstructure,thearchitectselectedtowrapa20,000squarefootreadingroomandopenstacksarea

aroundtheoldfacade.Insodoing,theyalteredtheexteriorforthebetter,swappingbareconcreteforanearthhuedterracottarainscreenpunctuatedbyplentifulglazing.Theyalsosignificantlyenhancedthelibrarysenvironmentalperformance,withearlyestimatessuggestingthatthenewLawrencePublicLibrarywillseea50percentreductioninenergyusagedespitea50percentincreaseinsquarefootage.

Thedecisiontoentirelyenclosetheoldbuildingwithintheadditionwasacriticalcomponentofthearchitectssustainabilitystrategy.Itallowedustocomeupwithacontinuousfacadeutilizingacontinuousinsulationsystem,explainedZaudke.Ithelpedalotwithenergyperformance.GouldEvanschoseaterracottarainscreenfromNBKtobettertiethelibrarytoitssurroundings.Thebuildingislocatedinaninterstitialzone,immediatelyadjacenttobuildingsconstructedinthe1950sbutnotfarfromLawrencesthrivinghistoricdowntown.Weselectedterracottabecauseitcouldplaybybothsetsofrules,saidZaudke.Ithasanhistoricconnotation,butitsalsoamuchmoremodernlookingmaterial.

Daylightingwasanotherofthearchitectskeyconcerns.Becausethereweresofewwindowsintheoldlibrary,whereveryouwenttherewasasortofphototropicbehavior,saidZaudke.Peoplejustgatheredaroundthewindows.Therestwasnotasutilized.GouldEvanssignificantlyalteredtheuserexperiencebycreatinganopenreadingroomwithinthewraparoundaddition,allofwhichisexposedtodaylight.Otherlibraryfunctionsarecontainedwithinthecore,whichinturnislitbothbyacontinuousclerestoryandaseriesofSolatubes.Theclerestoryalsopreventsglarewithinthereadingroombyilluminatingtheinsideofthefacade.

GouldEvansusedprescriptivedatatodeterminetheoverallbalanceofterracottatoglassonthenewfacadeabout60/40aswellasoneachexteriorwall.Toreducethermalgainontheeastandwestfaces,thearchitectsplacedterracottabaguettesovereachhorizontalslitwindow.Together,thebaguettesandthedepthofthewallactassunshades.

AsforLawrencePublicLibrarysoldconcretefacade,wedidntwanttojustpretenditwasntthere,saidZaudke.Instead,GouldEvanspartiallyoverlaiditwithatongueingroovesystemofunstainedwood.Theconcretehadaharshfeeltoit,explainedZaudke.Bywrappingitwithwoodandrevealingitinplaces,theresthisnicedialogthatoccurs.Everywhereitopensupiswheresomecorefunctionrevealsitselfitsaninterestingdynamic.Atthelibraryentrance,thearchitectsbroughtthewoodoutside,encasedinglasstoprotectitfromtheelements,saidZaudke.Thatvocabularyofcrackingopenthelibrary,ofmakingitaccessible,ispresentattheentry.
