Early fabrications were simple corners for horizontally laid profiled wall sheets. The use of curved sheeting forroofs drove the development of curved flashings. Now the industry demands a wide and varied range ofproducts and materials that include everything frompowder coated aluminium bullnoses and concealed gutterand soffit systems to bespoke details for special features.

Euroclad Architectural Fabrications suppliedthousands of soffit panels to finish the impressiveEmirates Stadium, the home of premiership giantsArsenal.

Around 7,700 soffit panels finished in plain mill aluminiumwere manufactured by Euroclad, which successfullyconceal the structural steelwork. These solid aluminiumsoffit trays were sited between the webs of the roof’s

steelwork and were designed by Prater, with input ondesign detailing and best manufacturing method fromEuroclad.

As well as concealing the steelwork the soffit panels alsoaccommodate the stadium’s public address and lightingsystems, the lighting being recessed into the soffits. To provide the acoustic attenuation necessary to enhancethe atmosphere in the stadium the soffits were perforated.

TOP OF THE CLASSFlashings are an important part of the Euroclad Architectural Fabrication portfolio.The demand for complex and challenging fabrications has grown over the years butEuroclad still prides itself on the efficient production and fast turnaround of flashings.

These products close the building envelope off to the weather and provide an attractive finishwhere building elements meet.

A recent example of the application of flashings to great effect is Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw Schoolin Pontypool. The flashings on this building complement the overall design and provide thefinishing touch that is needed.

The school was a mixture of new construction and refurbishment, with work split into threephases, involving the construction of a new teaching block and the removal of severaldemountable classrooms; the construction of a new dining block; and finally refurbishmentworks to the existing main building.

REFRESH, REFURB, REUSE

The Sherman Cymru Theatre reopened its doors to the public after two years ofrefurbishment. The dated exterior of the theatre has been replaced by bespoke shinglecladding manufactured by Euroclad Architectural Fabrications, designed by JonathanAdams – the architect behind the Wales Millennium Centre – and installed by specialistcontractor Severn Insulation.

The redevelopment aimed to give Cardiff’s only producing theatre the venue it, and its audience,deserves and to do so a number of changes were made to the venue, the most noticeable beingthe new exterior. Other work included a completely redesigned foyer space, public areas andaccess, as well as improvements to rehearsal rooms and backstage areas.

The most startling and impressive element of the refurbishment is the modern, exciting panelsthat were manufactured from Rimex stainless steel and galvanised mild steel; they deliver thecontemporary exterior design the building sorely needed.

ONE IS A MAGIC NUMBER

Euroclad Architectural Fabrications has been employed to use their extensiveengineering capabilities to provide Bolton One with dummy and active louvers.

Bolton One is a brand-new health, leisure and research centre offering state-of-the-artfacilities for the community, all under one roof.

Euroclad provided louvers to help achieve the building’s overall aesthetic design, as well as to provide fresh air and a natural cooling effect when the weather turns warm.

The new £34-million Bolton One boasts a 70 station fitness suite, eight-lane 25mswimming pool, hydrotherapy pool and workout studio. As part of the University It housesa sports and spinal injury clinic, an athlete development centre, the Centre for Researchfor Health and Wellbeing and a portfolio of flagship professional degree courses.

Euroclad was instrumental in the delivery of aspectacular Learning Resource Centre that was

constructed in Gloucestershire. Rednock Schoolwas funded by the Building Schools for the Future

programme with the Learning Resource Centrebeing conceived as a focal point, cantilevering over

the main entrance.

CURVED CUBE PROVIDES A LESSON IN FABRICATIONS

Euroclad manufactured bespoke 3mm powder-coatedaluminium panels, which provided the best match with thedesign aspirations and budget of this project, despite eachpanel incorporating curves in more than two directionsand two planes. Curving metal panels in more than oneplane and direction is very challenging and it was EurocladArchitectural Fabrications that were able to offer thetechnical know-how to create the working drawings and themanufacturing capability to produce the finished panels.

The joints had to be discrete and accommodate windowsand glazed louvers. The build-up also had to provide aweather-tight enclosure early on to meet the programme.

Rednock School provides 11,000m2 of innovative andversatile high quality teaching space. A One SchoolPathfinder project, the 1,400-pupil comprehensive sets the standard for future educational developments withinGloucestershire. Sports facilities include a multi-use gamesarea and an international standard all-weather football pitch.

CHOSEN WITH CAREOne of the great things about Euroclad Architectural Fabrications is the range ofproducts that are available. At Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital the range of products wasfully explored before flashings and cappings were chosen as a practical way to finishthe building. Meanwhile green feature cladding was installed to be as much part of thevisual design as the building function.

Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr is Caerphilly Borough's new Local General Hospital. Many services previouslyonly available at regional facilities will now be available for local residents in Ystrad Mynach. The new development replaces the 85 year old Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital, a mental health unitand smaller community hospitals in the area with the most up to date health facilities.

The hospital has 269 beds, all in single en-suite bedrooms which help to provide high qualitycare, reduce hospital-acquired infection rates and give patients the privacy and dignity they need.

The new hospital is at the heart of plans being developed by Aneurin Bevan Health Board andCaerphilly County Borough Council to improve health and social care for the local population.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIREuroclad has recently supplied Severn Insulation with performancelouvers for the Gwent Records Office in Ebbw Vale.

The centrepiece of this regeneration project is the re-furbished Grade 2listed Steelworks general office which has benefitted from the addition of a new extension that will house the records office, to be known as Gwent Archives.

The refreshed steelworks general office will be home to the SteelworksArchive Trust as well as a visitor centre allowing guests to trace the valley’sindustrial past.

The new extension features a modern design which Euroclad helped toachieve by supplying a standing seam roof, over which aluminium cassettepanels were installed. To provide natural ventilation, performance louverswere precision manufactured to provide year-round fresh air and a coolingeffect in the summer.

The challenge with these particular louvers was that they were to beinstalled on a sloping face. To avoid water entering the building the louvershad to be fitted with a special weather eliminator. The commitment toachieving functional as well as aesthetic solutions sets Euroclad apart.

EUROCLAD INVOLVEMENT SPELLS SUCCESSEuroclad’s expertise in fabrications for metal cladding and roofing systemsplayed a key role in the creation of a striking stainless steel motif across one of the main elevations of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.

Working to millimetre accuracy, Euroclad produced two-metre high letters complete withprecise installation instructions to spell out legends in both Welsh and English. The requiredaccuracy was achieved using the company’s computer-controlled CNC turret punchmachine, which produced 300 different panels from the 1200mm Rimex rainscreen panelssupplied from the United States. These were specified by architect Jonathan Adams, both for their aesthetic impact and ability to withstand the harsh marine environment of the location.

Iconic and seminal are words too easily bandied around these days but they are completely relevant to the Wales Millennium Centre. The unique, attention-grabbing façadegreets you on arrival at Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay and dominates The Oval Basin piazzait overlooks.

WJEC OFFICES

TOP MARKS FOR EUROCLAD ARCHITECTURALFABRICATIONSEuroclad were selected to manufacture the external building envelope of WJEC’shighly visible new office building in Cardiff.

The anodised aluminium panels create a striking outward facing façade at the new offices of WJEC, or Welsh Joint Education Committee as it was formerly known. WJEC wasestablished in 1948 as a consortium of local education authorities in Wales and it is now aregistered charity and a company limited by guarantee providing examinations, assessment,professional development, educational resources, access to youth arts activities andsupport for adults who wish to learn Welsh.

The building is a stunning new addition on a key gateway into the city. The 6000m2 fivestorey building provides conference and meeting rooms, tailored office space, a staff café,public bookshop, gallery space and an audio-visual recording studio.

When asked about the project architect Jonathan Adams commented “The simplicity andeconomy of rain-screen envelope systems has created an opportunity for architects to bereally inventive with the design of claddings. We pioneered the use of simple, face fixedstainless steel tiles on the Wales Millennium Centre, and the WJEC project is a variation of the same technique. There’s a huge range of metal patterns and colours now available, and the speed and precision of manufacture is extraordinary.”
