Background The purpose of this document is to provide Field Service Technicians with the requirements to prepare for successful replacement of an F5 appliance as part of an RMA. It is the expectation of F5 that each Field Service Technician representing F5 will read this document and prepare in accordance with the requirements defined below. Preparation Steps Prior to Going Onsite Software Preparation Field Techs will need Putty, TeraTerm, and WinSCP or equivalent software, and a web browser.

1) If you have not installed putty, teraterm, or WinSCP [or equivalent software for ssh, serial console, and SCP sessions] search for them on the Internet and download and install on your laptop. F5 recommends that you periodically verify that you have the latest versions.

2) Sign up for an account at https://downloads.f5.com if you have not done so already. This will allow you to download software and also to access the documentation through F5’s solution center, http://support.f5.com. Step-by-step instructions for establishing an account are provided at the end of this document.

3) Create a folder on your laptop called C:\F5 Downloads for storing files that you

download from F5. 4) Dark data centers are becoming increasingly popular, so it should be your practice to

download the required software before arriving at the customer site, Log in to https://downloads.f5.com and download the desired software release, including the local-install file, and the associated *.md5 files and also readme.txt files.

Required Tools: Here is a listing of the tools that a Field Tech should have available:

Cell phone and battery charger

Laptop with console port and working Ethernet port

Working Console Application (hyperterm)

Console cable

Null modem cable

3-5 Meter Cat 5E straight through cable

3-5 Meter Cat 5E cross-over through cable

Wrist ground strap

Philips head screwdriver – Both #2 and #3

Socket wrenches

Nice to have Tools Tools below are not required, but will help the Field Tech to complete the job much faster.

USB thumb drive (minimum 2GB)

External USB CD/DVD drive

Cable tester Communications It is highly recommended that Field Techs have a hands-free device for use with a cell phone. This will keep both hands free to work while listening to the instructions of the F5 Network Support Engineer and it will make hearing easier in data centers where air conditioners or other noise creating machines may be operating.



Setting Up Your F5 Software Download Account Step 1 Go to www.f5.com and click the Login link at the top of the page.

Step 2 Click on the Register for an Account link.



Step 3 Enter the email address to which you would like your registration confirmation sent, and click NEXT as prompted.



Step 4 Complete the account registration information as shown in the example below, and then click NEXT.



Step 5 If you have successfully completed registration, you will receive a message like the one shown below directing you to retrieve your Login instructions from your email account.



Step 6 1. Access your Login instructions from your email account. You should see a message from F5

Networks with the subject F5 Networks New Account Password.

2. Open this email and click on the link provided. The link should take you to the page shown

below.

3. Enter your password, confirm your password, and then click SUBMIT.



Step 7 If your password is accepted, you will see the page below. Congratulations! You have set up your F5 Software Download Account.
