are on the table in the back of the church. Please take one for your family!
Ever wonder what time services are? Who are our clergy? What is the church phone number, website address, or fax number? What season we are in? What are the readings for a particular Sunday? What Saint are we commemorating today? What color will the church hangings and vestments be on a particular day? What church year readings are we using? We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced,
gay, confused, filthy rich, comfortable, or dirt poor.
We extend a special welcome to wailing babies and excited toddlers.
We welcome you whether you can sing like Pavarotti or just growl quietly
to yourself. You‟re welcome here if you‟re just browsing, just woken up
or just got out of prison. We don‟t care if you‟re more Christian than the
Archbishop of Canterbury, or haven‟t been to church since Christmas ten
years ago.
We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up
yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome keep-fit
mums, football dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers,
vegetarians, junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or
still addicted. We welcome you if you‟re having problems, are down in the
dumps or don‟t like „organized religion.‟ (We’re not that keen on it
either!)
We offer a welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard,
don‟t work, can‟t spell, or are here because granny is visiting and wanted
to come to church.
We welcome those who are inked, pierced, both or neither. We offer a
special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion
shoved down their throat as kids or got lost in the city and wound up here
by mistake. We welcome pilgrims, tourists, seekers, doubters…and you! --with kind permission of Coventry Cathedral

Or, you may hold the bread and dip it into the wine when the cup is offered. If you wish
to receive a blessing rather than communion, please move to the communion rail and
cross your arms over your chest to receive a blessing.
Please maintain a time of silence, stillness and centering during the prelude and postlude.
Prelude: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ............................................ J.S. Bach
In procession: Merton .......................................................................... Hymn 59
THE WORD OF GOD: ........................... Prayer Book, p. 355
Trisagion ........................................................................... Hymnal, S100
The Collect of the Day: Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance
and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings
and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ
our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for ever. Amen.
Rector Search Collect: Gracious and loving God, steadfast Shepherd and Guide: enlighten and
encourage us as we seek a new rector; keep us patient, prayerful and joyful,
and grant us clarity of vision to discern your will, that we may welcome
someone who will faithfully minister with the people of this parish. Grant
this through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
The First Reading: .......................................................... Isaiah 40:1-11 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to
Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is
paid, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A
voice cries out: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make
straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become
level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be
revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has
spoken.” A voice says, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All
people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass
withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely
the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of
our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald
of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of
good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, Here is your
God!” See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his
reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock
like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his
bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.
Gradual: ....................................................................... Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13
The Second Reading: .................................................................... 2 Peter 3:8-15a Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand
years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise,
as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to
come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the
heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire,
and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. Since all these things
are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of
holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God,
because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will
melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a
new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting
for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and
regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.
Sequence Hymn: Bereden väg för Herran .............................................. Hymn 65
The Holy Gospel: ................................................................................. Mark 1:1-8 The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the
prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your
way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: „Prepare the way of the Lord, make
his paths straight,‟” John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a
baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean
countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized
by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel‟s
hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He
proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not
worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with
water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

As we wait for the fulfillment of the ancient promises, let us offer prayers to our God
who speaks tenderly and whose patience is our salvation, saying, Come, O Lord, and save
us.

Commissioning of Lay Ministers
CELEBRANT: Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, we are all baptized by the one
Spirit into one Body and given gifts for a variety of ministries for the common good.
Our purpose is to commission these persons in the Name of God and of this
congregation to a special ministry to which they are called.
SPONSOR: I present these persons who have chosen to serve as lectors, ushers, Altar
Guild, torch bearers, acolytes, Lay Eucharistic Visitors, musicians, Daughters of the
King, and those who have been licensed to administer the chalice in this congregation.
ANTIPHON: The cup of blessing which we bless is a sharing in the blood of Christ.
The bread which we break is a sharing in the Body of Christ. Read from the book,
from the law of God, clearly so that the people understand the reading. Bear the cross
and torches with reverence and serve at the altar with gladness, for you are serving at
the Lord‟s table. Raise sounds of joy to God. Show hospitality to strangers, for
thereby some have entertained angels unaware.
V. Your Word is a lantern to my feet:
R. And a light upon my path
V. I will go to the altar of God:
R. To the God of my joy and gladness.
V. As often as you eat this bread and drink this cup:
R. You proclaim the Lord‟s death until he comes.
V. When the song was raised in praise of the Lord:
R. The glory of the Lord filled the house of God.
V. We will recount to generations to come the praiseworthy deeds and the power of the
Lord:
R. And the wonderful works he has done.
V. Above everything, love one another earnestly.
R. For love covers many sins.
CELEBRANT: Are these persons you are to present prepared by a commitment to
Christ as Lord, by regular attendance at worship and by the knowledge of their duties
to exercise their ministry to the honor of God and the well-being of his Church?
SPONSOR: I believe they are.
CELEBRANT: You have been called to a ministry in this congregation. Will you, as
long as you are engaged in this work, perform it with diligence?
CANDIDATES: I will, with God‟s help.
CELEBRANT: Will you faithfully and reverently execute the duties of your ministry to
the honor of God and the benefit of the members of this congregation?
CANDIDATES: I will, with God‟s help.
CELEBRANT: Let us pray.
Grant, Almighty God, that those who serve in these ministries may live in love and
holiness according to your commandment and at the last, come to the joy of your
heavenly feast with all your saints in light; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
In the name of God and this congregation, I commission you to administer the chalice,
read the Word, lead in intercessory prayer, welcome others in worship, prepare and
serve at the altar, and sing the Lord‟s praises.

Stewardship Reflection: “…he will feed his flock like a shepherd…carry

indeed carries and leads us, is it not our joyful duty to follow His example
by doing the same for others – both here in the parish and beyond our
walls? Being a faithful steward is part of what helps us follow his
example.

To place a name on the parish prayer list, please advise one of the clergy or the office. Names are
normally deleted from this list after two months (or one year, if appropriate), subject to renewal.
The Daughters of the King also maintain a separate prayer list. To place a name on that list, please
fill out a prayer card (located in the rack across from the Rector’s office) and place it in the prayer
box in the rear of the sanctuary or give the information to one of the Daughters of the King. The
Daughters will pray daily for everyone for two weeks (longer if requested).
CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS and SPECIAL MUSIC
If you would like to remember or give thanks for a loved one by contributing toward the Christmas poinsettias that decorate the church or to the cost of special musicians for our services, please complete this form. The form should be sent along with a donation of your choice and the names of those you wish to remember or give thanks for. Please return forms to the church no later than Friday, December 15, or you may place them in the offering plate on Sunday. The names will appear in the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day service
bulletins. Volunteers will deliver the plants to the sick and shut-in members of the parish after Christmas.

Victory House
Christmas Gift List for 2017
It’s almost Christmas again and time to remember our clients at
Victory House. For more than thirty years we have provided
presents to those less fortunate than we. For new parishioners a
little history seems in order. Victory House is a shelter for
homeless men. Trinity Church, along with other churches in
downtown Bethlehem, founded this mission in 1984. At first we
just provided a place to sleep, but now our program is much
more. The end goal is to reinstate these men back into society as
contributing members with the help of our excellent professional
staff.
Items may be brought to the church anytime after Thanksgiving
and put in the box at the back of the church. If you would rather
make a monetary donation, you may give the money to me at the
8 o’clock service or put it in an envelope marked for Victory House
in the collection plate.
Items needed:
Umbrellas Wallets Nail clippers Bars of soap Boxers or briefs (all sizes) Pocket-size notebooks Diabetic hard candies Plastic thong shower shoes for men Diabetic Socks (Walgreens)
Many of these items can be purchased at the Dollar stores, Wal-
Mart, K-Mart, etc., for very little cash. We all appreciate anything
you can give to make their Christmas a little happier. If you have
any questions, please call me at 610-865-3487.
Thank you,
Sally McIntosh

How to become a member—
You are very welcome to attend worship services, member or not. If you would like
to become part of the parish, it is easy. Just give your name, address, phone number
(and email address, if you have one) to a priest or usher, or leave it in the parish
office. Part of being an Episcopalian is giving of your time, talent and treasure. We
hope you will attend our special programs and join our other activities. There are so
many opportunities to become a working member – by helping with worship
services, or serving on a committee or outreach group.
