On the cover Church of Saint Saviour on Spilled Blood, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Piero Castiglioni highlights the coloured mosaics and the splendid onion domes of the Cathedral. Through warm white hues and a wise integration of various luminaires both mounted on poles and attached directly to the building, the lighting scheme is able to obtain the uniformity of lighting values and dramatic effects to the Chrurch. Elliptical light beams overlapping one another, flood optics and multilines. A combination of projectors are able to cancel out the night shadows and to guarantee uniformity and vivacity of lighting values for maximum overall effect.

Guzzini Group - Fimag
The Guzzini group is made up of three companies. In order of incorporation, they are : Fratelli Guzzini Spa, iGuzzini Illuminazione Spa, Teuco Guzzini Spa. All are headquartered in Recanati Italy. Although each Guzzini company operates independently from the others and in a different market sector, the Guzzini companies also share the following common things:
- A natural propensity toward producing objects for both domestic environments as well as for common areas;
- A strong predilection for quality and performance by choosing only the most modern and innovative materials;
- A predisposition and true vocation for innovation, both in design and in technology;
- A deep conviction that Industrial Design plays a central role in each and every company.
Fimag, which stands for Finanziaria Mariano Guzzini, was established in 1982 with these basic, underlying and unifying precepts. Although they each have their separate operations and companies, Mariano Guzzini's children and grandchildren are all reunited under the Fimag umbrella.
iGuzzini - The History and Company Philosophy
We have worked in and for “light” since 1958. This was the year when the Harvey Creazioni, a small company that produced lamps for the home, was founded. Today we are the leading Italian manufacturer in the “Lighting” market, and we rank among the top European manufacturers. We aren’t satisfied by simply making good lights. We want be the creators of good lighting: light that shines in a room, a house, a building, a museum, a cathedral, a company, a plaza, an airport, and, yes . . . even an entire city. Good lighting has to be created with the awareness that it has to integrate with its environment, taking care not to invade it, darken it, or violate it. Light must be respected, and light has to, in turn, respect the nature of people and things. The iGuzzini mission is therefore to study light, to know light and to make it known; improving the integration with architecture through industrial design. Because of this, a large part of what we do is to offer consultation on lighting techniques, both in the design phase and as an after-sales service. Famous architects and designers have consulted us since the very beginning iGuzzini's operations.
Light design is not just for spaces; good design is also an awareness of all aspects that are tied to the quality of space and the ambiance that is created by light, both indoors as well as outdoors. Because of this conviction, iGuzzini has worked with a large number of researchers, physicians, sociologists, and physicists who hail from the most important international research organizations: Harvard University, M.I.T Boston, Università “La Sapienza” in Rome, Politecnico of Milan, Fraunhofer Institute, Central Institute for Restoration, CNR.
Awards and recognition
iGuzzini products can be found in all kinds of different locations: airports, historical districts, museums, shops, archaeological areas, and multifunctional spaces. We have received some of the best European awards for industrial design, such as the Gold Compass, conferred to iGuzzini three times by the ADI, (“Associazione per il Disegno Industriale” / Industrial Design Association). In 1989 the Gold Compass was won for “Shuttle” designed by Bruno Gecchelin; in 1991 it was given to all the Guzzini companies, and in 1998 the Gold Compass was again won for “Nuvola” designed by R. Piano & Meccano.
iGuzzini headquarters
Mario Cucinella’s project for our industrial headquarters expresses the desire to unite natural elements that are tied to the environment that surrounds us with artificial man-made elements. It is therefore a work of architecture and nature, of technology, and of respect for the environment. Our environment is not only the landscaping that surrounds the buildings, but above all the interior where real people live and work. This shows the level of sophistication and care we have for design and those minute technical details that are dedicated to creating liveable and natural spaces made of air, natural light, and clean energy. With this project, we embarked upon on a search for architectural precision and an environmental and mental ecology. By doing this, we found a balance and both artificial and natural beauty.

The designers
iGuzzini has always counted on design as its main distinguishing element. Design, for iGuzzini, means planning, awareness, and collaboration. Therefore, we have enlisted the help of a large number of professional designers, who have contributed to our growth throughout the years. Our company has focused its marketing efforts on the concept that lighting quality is a fundamental need and contributes to the quality of its environment. We have communicated this new way of thinking about lighting through a series of marketing activities, the most important of which are our advertising campaigns.
The advertising campaign was developed to be run in international magazine and newspapers in order raise awareness with the masses. Therefore, our ad campaign targets are a wide range and a large number of people, and not only the experts of our particular market.
1982 The Lighting Industry “Lighting part VII”. In 1982, our company embarked upon a campaign that intended to illustrate the advantages of lighting design as first
1990 With iGuzzini, against light pollution. In 1990s we realized that despite our commitment to top quality lighting design, we still needed to raise awareness. Therefore, we chose to tackle an issue that was yet to have been addressed by anyone, an issue that derives from poor lighting design. That issue is Light Pollution.
What exactly is light pollution? Basically, it is the dispersion of artificial light upwards and/or toward any direction that does not need light. This successful campaign caught the attention of the public as well as legislators and administrators who decided to direct their attention to this important issue.
step toward environmental quality. We began to create a dossier with different volumes, each dedicated to a different and specific lighting issue.
2002-06 Partners for Better Light Lighting has become a key element as we strive to create or maintain well-being. In order to achieve this goal we enlisted the help of many associations. The slogan of our last international campaign is: “Partners for Better Light”.
1988 in collaboration with the CNR and with the Lighting Research Centre in Troy. We were able to show, through the data from our experiments, how artificial lighting can affect all human beings' psychological and physiological equilibrium.
2000 Better Light for Better Life 1998 marked the beginning of our quality of life and personal wellness research, as we began to turn our attention to light pollution in interior spaces as well as exteriors. We continued the biodynamic light research that we had already begun in

Marketing
www.iguzzini.com iGuzzini is constantly dedicated to develop and promote the culture of light . The primary focus and objectives of our activities are those of sharing the value of utilizing artificial light correctly and to promote top quality lighting projects. With this goal in mind, we restructured the www.iguzzini.com official website, creating areas in which it is possible to find information on products and projects that we have designed, on the company (its history, its philosophy), information about iGuzzini’s work with architects and designers, as well as the research associations we work with. In the download area, users can view 2D and 3D drawings of the products; photometric curves; Photos, which is a lighting design programme developed by iGuzzini Illuminazione; general catalogues; product specific catalogues; and also the Incontroluce magazine. The UK (www.iguzzini.co.uk), Spanish (www.iguzzini.es), Swiss (www.iguzzini.ch), and German (www.iguzzini.de) subsidiaries have developed their own sites, in which the user can find the company philosophy and brand applied to the different European nations
Light Campus.iguzzini.com The Light Campus section of iguzzini.com, which can be freely accessed by anyone, is devoted to the light culture and lighting techniques, and it is open to all those people who want to delve into these thematic issues. It allows the user to independently manage their his or her own lessons and curriculum based upon his or her interests and requirements. In 2006, LightCampus underwent a restructuring process, breaking the issues into 4 areas, to which we added practical exercises (laboratory) on real projects that have already been developed.
Catalogue.iGuzzini.it The new online catalogue was created with the objective of giving designers, architects, and lighting designers a tool to quickly find and cross-reference product information and their different features. This quick new system with simplified graphics makes consulting our catalogue very easy. The catalogue lies within the www.iguzzini.com site, and can be searched by using different parameters and key words, which do not necessarily need to be associated with a specific product. Users can search for an iGuzzini luminaire by first starting with a certain type of lamp, and then by choosing the type of fitting (spotlights, recessed, pendants, etc...) which narrows down the search, allowing users in the end to view a single product description sheet which describes the item in full. The photometrics of that particular luminaire can then be downloaded. Users can also utilize a programme of lighting verification to immediately find lighting values that are obtained in a certain interior space by the luminaire they have just chosen.

CIE n°136 (Guide to the Lighting of Urban Areas) recommends choosing a light fitting with a coefficient of LxA0,5
which represents the degree of glare tolerability in various areas of an urban context. “L” represents the luminance value of the fitting observed from a vertical plane which is parallel to the axis of the road in a direction inclined 85°÷90° from the vertical. “A” is the apparent area covered by the light as observed from a 90° angle in relation to the vertical. The table on the left provides the most appropriate lighting parameters, where “h” is the height of the light source.

isolux Indicates the curves that connect the points on the street plane that have the same value of the horizontal lighting. To obtain EP lighting in one point, produced by a fixture that is installed at a height that is different from the given height, follow these instructions: On the isolux diagram, detract the E*lighting value from the d* distance = (d/h1) xtaken in the same direction of point P. The EP value is therefore obtained by the ratio: EP = E* x (h/h1)2.The indicated values are absolute and do not refer to 1000 lm.

Light pollution iGuzzini
A link with the sky has always been atavistic for mankind. Placing a barrier to this relationship provokes imbalances in the natural balance of things, not just for mankind, but also for plants and animals. In the congress held in Paris in June 1992, UNESCO highlighted the enormous damage wreaked upon astronomy by excessive artificial lighting and declared that starry nights were a part of the world’s heritage that should be safeguarded. The culprit of all this is light pollution which also results in the waste of 30% of the energy used (data provided by Dark Sky Association) to light up cities.
To resolve the problem, there is no need to plunge cities into the dark, but simply to adopt rules governing lighting which make use of fixtures which, through the use of concentrating and asymmetric optics, light-refracting screens and fresnel lenses, are able to provide effective lighting without increasing the already high level of light pollution. It is not enough just to use these devices; any installation or maintenance must be undertaken properly to ensure light pollution is kept to a minimum.
Fittings which ensure a tight control of light pollution are highlighted with this symbol.

Street optic (ST) The street optic permits a larger centre-to-centre distance between the poles. This translates into low visual impact and a reduction in the number of fittings. Energy, purchase and maintenance costs are reduced in order for the lighting equipment to have better social impact.
Asymmetric optic (A60°) Both visual comfort and uniformity are very good. It is ideal for the illumination of commercial centres, residential areas, historical town centres and wide surfaces. The asymmetrical beam - maximum intensity 60° on the transversal plane - has good side emission.
