Adaptive Wireless Lighting Control Systems Lighting Control
ETCC Presentation Mark Keating
Lumewave • 2.5 Years - Young • Developed core technology for our centrally
managed, wireless lighting control system specifically designed for outdoor fixture control – Co-developed, tested and patented predictive
direction of travel (DOT) based pathway lighting control process with CLTC, UC-Davis
• Packaged technology for installation on the exterior or interior of fixture or pole
• Completed installing the largest adaptive (DOT) pathway control system: – UC-Davis
• Over 1,000 fixtures on pathways alone

Design Criteria – Be Simple!
• Simple to Install
• Simple to commission
• Simple to operate
• Simple to maintain

Target Applications
• Campuses – Schools/Universities – Corporate – Military
• Types of Fixtures – Any dimmable technology:
• LED, Induction, Plasma, eHID
• Adaptive Control Applications – Pathways, Wall-Packs, Post-Tops – Streetlights based on pedestrian and automobile
traffic and time of day per RP-8 5

The Wireless Side of Things
• IEEE 802.15.4 • 900Mhz (902 – 928Mhz)
– High power/Long Range (250mw/24DBM) • AES Encryption • Point to Point / Point to Multi-Point
– Base stations (one gateway) with repeaters to extend coverage
– Any controller may be a repeater
– Multiple gateways for larger area coverage
7
Adaptive Exterior Lighting Control
• Adaptive control based on combinations of time, sensor input, light levels, etc.
• Applications: – Pathways – Area – Building Exterior – Parking lots – Can also work with streetlights using new
vehicle and pedestrian sensor technology • Test project about to start with SCE (Eagle Glen)
8
Adaptive Direction of Travel Control
9
Direction Of Travel Control
• At dusk, lights come on at 20% lumen output • When motion is detected by each fixture, others
are told about it and react as programmed – Fixtures in advance and behind the sensed direction
of travel are raise level to 100%. After a fixed time and mo pedestrians have been detected on the pathway, the light level reduces again to the 20%
• Requires for this function – Fixture with dimmable driver – Motion sensor – Peer-Peer wireless controller (Lumewave TOP900) – Pathway location ID or GPS Location

Cost reduced by design
11
UC-Davis Installation
• Wireless controllers installed on or within: – Streetlights (On dusk – dawn, off dawn – dusk) – Pathway Lights - Adaptive – Wall Packs - Adaptive – Post Tops - Adaptive
• All fixtures were replaced with dimmable LED • Additional savings documented from adaptive
control of pathways averages >60%

Adaptive Parking Lot Lighting Control
24
Requires Wide Area Motion Sensing
• To properly control parking lot lighting based on motion, the motion sensing equipment must have long range and wide coverage patterns
• In most cases, poles are spaced 100’+ apart so multiple sensors per/pole may be required to provide overlapping,360 degree coverage
• This can be accomplished.

Adaptive Control Conclusions
• Conclusion form Test Results: – Adaptive control of pathway, area and
building exterior lighting will reduce the energy consumption > 50%

Next Step - Join Up With Smart Grid • Smart-Grid
– IEEE 802.15.4G – ANSI 12.22 file
delivery – Can connect to
existing AMI or, – Can be installed as
stand-alone systems
