Wine in New Zealand

Along with great food, New Zealand is internationally renowned for a wide range of world-class wines produced in the many vineyards and wineries in both North and South Islands. New Zealand is a premier new-world wine country, producing award-winning red and white wines that reflect clean

air, sunshine and sustainable wine practice.

Sourcing and offering quality red wines is a specialty for us at Realize Asia. Red wine is made from the juice and skins of dark skinned grapes, and it gets its colouring from the skins. This

introduces more intense flavour and adds richness and body to the wine, as well as a quality of mild astringency that comes from the vegetable material in the grape skins. This means red

wines tends to be bigger, richer and stronger than white. Red wine is usually served at 'room' temperature and can be enjoyed either with a meal or without.

As with most horticultural species, the wine grape family, which is responsible for the vast majority of the world's wines, is divided into different types, known as varieties. As with apples, peaches and other fruits, individual grape varieties have quite different characteristics. They may be different in

color, ranging from pale green to dark purple/blue and almost black, and have skins of varying thickness, and diverse chemical compositions. These different varieties have different flavors and textures – for example red wines like Merlot are rich and bold. Whereas, the award winning New Zealand red wine – Pinot Noir, is lighter and suitable for drinking anytime. Whatever your needs, at Realize Asia we can offer you the finest in New Zealand wines all sourced and created in the

100% pure natural environment that only our country can provide.

Court of Master Sommeliers

The Court of Master Sommeliers was established to encourage improved standards of beverage knowledge and service in hotels and restaurants. Education was then, and remains today, the

Court's charter. The first successful Master Sommelier examination was held in the United Kingdom in 1969. By April 1977, the Court of Master Sommeliers was established as the premier

international examining body.

Over the four decades since the Court's first examination was held, 174 candidates have earned the Master Sommelier Diploma. In the service of wine, spirits and other alcoholic beverages, the

Master Sommelier Diploma is the ultimate professional credential anyone can attain worldwide.

Schist Hills

Schist Hills vineyard is part of the largest Pinot Noir vineyard in thesouthern hemisphere, known as McArthur Ridge.

Located in the Alexandra Basin, which is at the heart of Central Otago, a region reknown for producing premium quality Pinot Noir wine.

Alexandra Basin is achieving accolades and awards for producing some of the best wines of the region.

The climate is New Zealand's only true continental climate with greater extremes of daily and seasonal temperatures. These extremes in temperature produce grapes with intense flavours and a vibrancy leading to excellent Pinot

Noir and aromatic wines.

"Fairly new to the wine market this producer is aiming high in terms of quality. The Schist Hills 09 Pinot Noir is floral and pretty on the nose with ripe cherry and spiced oak suggestions. On the

palate the medium-plus concentration of fruit and texture gives this wine character and personality, but most importantly pinosity. A well-made and well-balanced wine - 4 stars."

Artisan Wines in the Oratia Valley

The Sunde Family have been growing grapes in the Oratia valley on the outskirts of Auckland since 1906. This beautiful terraced vineyard was first planted in 1995. It's shallow clay soils produce wines with fine

aroma and excellent structure.

All of the important vine tending work in this vineyard is done by hand. Often three generations of the family can be found working side by side.

The vineyard produces a multiple award winning Syrah and limited quantities of 'Dominic', a blend of Gamay noir & Pinot noir.

The first vintage of Syrah (2002) was judged "Best Syrah" at the 2004 Bragato Awards, placing this wine at the pinnacle of New Zealand Syrah.

At Artisan, we recognise that each wine growing region of New Zealand has its forte', and in some cases, its hidden secrets. Our aim is to offer a selection of the classic wines of New Zealand through the concept

of bottling wines from single estates. Each estate has been carefully selected as either a leading representative of the region and varieties grown, or for its unique characteristics.

Central to our philosophy is the elevation of the grape grower to star status. It is his and her work in the vineyard that is recognised by every bottle carrying the name of the vineyard. This is our guarantee that you can identify the exact source of the wine you will enjoy and follow the subtle seasonal variations of

the vineyard, from vintage to vintage.

Okahu Estate – Northland“Northland’s Most Awarded

Vineyard and Winery.”

The winery is situated 3.5kms from Kaitaia on the road to Ahipara, at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach. Vineyard owner Monty Knight established the first vines in 1984,

since then the wines have earned a reputation for consistent quality, winning numerous awards including gold medals for their Chardonnay and Shiraz.

A land of ancient forests, people and legends. A beach that stretches further than you can imagine. Sunsets too beautiful for words. This is New Zealand’s Northland, the country’s warmest region, the home of Okahu Estate and a unique and challenging

location for winemaking. The layers of complexity in Okahu wines reflect the layers of soil, sandstone, ancient kauri forest and clay in which the grapes grow. The Knight

family has been coaxing the very best from these “Kauri Sands” since 1984, creating award-winning wines with inner strength and enduring spirit.

About the Sommelier

I have been immersed in the hospitality industry for my entire working career and have greatly enjoyed all my posts. In my most recent Food and Beverage posting I lead the Food and Beverage Department through a period of approximately 100% growth during my employment there, additionally the restaurant involved won numerous awards during this period including HANZ Best Beef in New Zealand, Hallmark Gold Award 7 times, approximately 60 medals for food and beverage service and New Zealand’s Culinary Expo and most recently a bronze for New Zealand Restaurant of the Year. We also had very positive write ups from New Zealand Wine critics including Vic Williams.I have always worked very closely with the Executive and Sous chefs in my roles and played a large part in menu design and wine matching.Prior to the my most recent role I was appointed as the Operations Manager for Conferencing and Conventions at the Carlton Hotel (now Rendezvous) at the age of 24 and enjoyed running that operation immensely. The Carlton Hotel had ballroom facilities able to cater for over 600 people and was arguably the finest conference establishment in Auckland at the time. I am also very passionate about wines having myself been inducted into the International Guild of Master Sommeliers.
