Think of it…a valley up to 5 miles wide. Then realize the Minnesota River Valleywas carved into the landscape at the end of the last ice age when a prehistoric

river drained the mighty Lake Agassiz leaving this flat-bottomed valley throughwhich the Minnesota River now flows. It was the Dakota people who named the

river, which means “sky-like-water” in one interpretation, and then later the state

was named after the river. The oldest known rocks in the continental United States,

over 3 billion years old, can be viewed between Montevideo and Granite Falls along

U.S. 212. The valley is notable as the origin and center of the canning industry in

Minnesota, and remains the country’s largest producers of sweet corn. As a vacation

destination, a great place to begin is the Minnesota River Valley National ScenicByway. You’ll discover history, hunting, arts, fossils, theater, entertainment, food, festivals, beer, wine, birding, parks, outdoor activities, shopping, antiques, museums,

golfing, camping, gaming, and…whew! The list seems endless. Come learn the

stories of the past so you can appreciate all the valley offers today, and create

your own surprising stories for your memories.

plenty of surprises in store. Begin with the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail;

a 39-mile multi use paved biking and walking trail. Originally a railroad line

connecting Faribault and Mankato, it was abandoned in the 1970’s and turned over

to the state. Now the trail has been developed to offer year-round activities as it

stretches through three of the state’s most scenic counties. Discover woodlands,

rolling hills, grassy prairies, and sparkling lakes as you explore Minnesota’s Southern

Lakes area. No less than four state parks, Sakatah Lake, Nerstrand Big Woods,

Rice Lake and Big Island, entice visitors four seasons of the year. Come for such

adventures as fishing, boating, swimming, bird watching, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling,

and much more. There are resorts, campgrounds, historic sites and plenty of eateries
