HISTORY: Established in 1848, Hancock Lumber Company is a sixth-generation, family-owned business operating a land company, a sawmill division, a network of lumberyards and kitchen design showrooms, and a truss manufacturing facility across Maine and New Hampshire. Hanging on the wall in the company’s home office in Casco is an original copy of a handwritten contract dated October 4th, 1848, for the construction of a new mill for the grand sum of $840. Family Business Magazine recognizes Hancock Lumber as the seventy-first-oldest family business in America.

MISSION AND VALUES: At Hancock Lumber, we leverage the power of engaging our 560 employees to embrace and live out our organization’s values—safety, employee engagement, customer intimacy, efficien-cy, community, pride, and culture. In turn, our employees reflect the heart and soul of our organization—the Hancock brand! Ultimately, our mission is to create a work environment that first and foremost recognizes employees as human beings and enhances the lives of anyone who works at our organization.

EMPLOYMENT: Hancock is a proud multiyear recipient of the Best Places to Work in Maine award! With competitive pay, an outstanding work environment, and excellent benefits, Hancock Lumber offers many exciting jobs in retailing, manufacturing, sales, distribution, management, and more.

FUTURE: IIn May 2019, Hancock Lumber completed the modern-day Casco Campus when they finished construction and moved into their new home office, situated across from the sawmill, next to the lumber-yard, and connected to their timberlands. In a beautiful and emotional dedication between mother and son, Kevin Hancock revealed the new building shall forever more be known as the Carol J. Hancock Home Office. In honoring Carol, Kevin referenced the quote, “Those who invest the most are the last to surrender,” repre-senting her commitment to the family business.

MISSION + VALUES

“The real mission of this company

is to enhance the lives of the

people who work here—to make

a meaningful contribution to the

quality of their lives.”

–Kevin Hancock, President + CEO

SAFETY. Undoubtedly, safety is our #1 priority and it is everyone’s responsibility–every minute of every day. No task or performance goal is so important that safety should be jeopardized in order to accomplish it. Work place safety is an absolute team sport.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT. Leadership is encouraged at every position in the company. We strive to create a workplace where employees feel empowered, respected, and listened to–honoring our commit-ment to a culture where ‘Everybody Leads’ and truly being a ‘Best Place to Work’. Creating and sustaining a best place to work environment takes focus, discipline, and a commitment from everyone on the team—the goal is to have a culture that enhances the lives of people that work at Hancock, fosters a high level of en-gagement, and one that guides good minute-to-minute decision-making by all employees.

CUSTOMER INTIMACY. Taking market leading care of employees and customers defines who we are. Our focus on employee and customer intimacy means fostering deep levels of engagement across all segments—from employees and customers, to vendors, and our surrounding communities. Our relationships have deep roots and are long-term because we ask questions and listen to what matters most for the people on our team and the customers we are servicing. We know who we are, and we put all our energy into being the company we want to be by staying true to our values and concentrating on our core customers, products, and services.

EFFICIENCY. Reducing waste as measured in time, materials, and energy is one side of Hancock’s ef-ficiency story. The ‘Higher Calling of Lean’—creating efficiencies and gaining capacity to put work back in its place—is part two. Being efficient and accurate enables us to service customers better, but also frees up time for a healthier work-life balance for our employees.

CULTURE

COMMUNITY. Proudly doing business since 1848, Hancock has always been immersed in the communi-ties we serve. Deeply embedded in Hancock’s culture is stewardship, and we firmly believe in giving back and leaving things in better shape than when we assumed responsibility for them. Our employees and customers raise families in these communities; our employees and customers coach and serve on boards here. We con-nect with organizations around the state, supporting them financially and with in-kind materials, along with the gift of time and service.

PRIDE. Being a part of Team Hancock means taking pride in doing the right thing for our teammates, our customers, and our communities. Employees—the people servicing the customer—are the most valuable as-set to any organization. We employ enthusiastic, vibrant, hardworking, smart team members who are excited about delivering world-class products and services to our customers, continuous improvement, and a culture of engagement and innovation.

CULTURE. Culture makes the difference at Hancock Lumber. Hancock promotes a team environment where every employee leads, feels empowered, respected, trusted, listened to, and valued as a person. Our culture is employee driven, built on viewing employees as people and having the management patience to involve the entire team in the company’s leadership processes. CAMP SUNSHINE. Since 1991, Hancock Lumber has been connected to this amazing organization, located in Casco, Maine where our company was established in 1848. Camp Sunshine is a retreat that combines respite, recreation, and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. For the past decade, Hancock Lumber has been a proud sponsor of Camp Sunshine’s annual Pumpkin Festival fundraiser. A Maine tradition since 2003, the Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival transforms the streets of Freeport and L.L. Bean’s Campus into a sea of orange. Hancock Lumber has been a long-time sponsor, helping transport pumpkins and sponsor the event full of 10,000 lit jack-o-lanterns. Learn more online: www.CampSunshine.org

CASCO DAYS. Since 1935, Casco Village has come alive the last Saturday of July with family fun, traditions, prizes, rides, parades, and more! A long-standing tradition, Hancock Lumber supports Casco Days every year with employee volunteers, sponsorship fundraising, and overall event management. The 3-day festival brings communities and families together—from near and far, young and old. Learn more online: www.CascoDays.com

TRAVIS MILLS FOUNDATION. Founded in 2013 by United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, the foundation is a testament to Travis’ motto, ‘Never give up. Never quit.’ On April 10th, 2012, Travis lost portions of both arms and legs from an IED while on duty in Afghanistan, becoming one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries. Mills channeled his spirit and energy into giving back to recalibrated veterans and their families by creating the foundation and opening the retreat, offering an all-expenses paid experience. Hancock Lumber has proudly donated building materials for the retreat’s lakeside cabin and outdoor water recreation center. Learn more online: www.TravisMills.org

of power to be tapped in

creating an organization

ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGY. While Hancock Lumber is a privately-owned family-business, the company maintains an outside Board of Directors with a Chairman and Vice Chairman. Our board comes from myriad of careers and backgrounds, bringing an invaluable depth of knowledge and guidance that helps support our team.

A NEW LEADERSHIP MODEL. “The big idea is that it’s not enough anymore to just make lumber or sell building materials. Lots of people can do that. The idea is to make and sell products in a way that adds social value to the lives of the people who do the work. It’s about being an EMPLOYEE CENTRIC company. As communi-ties, governments, churches, and other traditional institutions see their influence wane, which institutions will reinvent their mission to pick up the slack? I say private enterprise—but, private enterprise must evolve if it wants to carry that torch. The mission, metrics, values, and leadership paradigms must be rethought.” –Kevin Hancock
