• AKS32b - evaluate the impact of European contact on Native American cultures including Spanish missions along the barrier islands, and the exploration of Hernando De Soto
• AKS32c - support reasons for European exploration of North America and settlement with emphasis on the interests of the French, Spanish and British in the southeast area of North America
The World in 1500
What Countries were involved in/competed for exploration?
• France• England• Spain• Portugal• Italy• The Dutch
What motivated them?
With your elbow partner, brainstorm reasons why Europeans would want to explore.
Economic Reasons (GOLD)• Explorers sought (looked for):
– Gold– Natural Resources
• Fish• Animal Pelts
– Beaver– Bear– Deer– Etc.
• Forests• Raw Goods that could be
finished in the home country and then sold abroad for huge profits= Mercantilism
God• Explorers wanted to
spread their religion to the Native Americans
• Many Native Americans converted because they were threatened with death if they did not convert
Glory
• Many explorers hoped to attain personal wealth and fame for their exploration!
• Think of Christopher Columbus… he is still world famous!
The Columbian Exchange
• People, animals and plants, and diseases were being moved across the Atlantic Ocean
• This exchange became known as the Columbian Exchange or the Triangle of Trade

The Columbian Exchange & Disease
• Diseases like Smallpox were devastating to Native Americans, who had never been exposed to them and were not immune
• Historians estimate that between 1519-1619, Native American populations decreased by 90-95%
• Below is a quote from a Spanish Missionary in Mexico talking about smallpox & its effect on Native Americans
“There was a great havoc. Very many died of it. They could not walk. . . . They could not move; they could not stir; they could not change position, nor lie on one side; nor face down, nor on their backs. And if they stirred, much did they cry out. Great was its destruction.”

Effects of the Spanish on Native Americans
• Spanish brought:– Catholicism to Native
Americans– New Governments– Diseases like Smallpox
that killed huge numbers of Native Americans
– Enslavement of many Native Americans
Christopher Columbus• 1492• Spain• Discovered North America.
Explored San Salvador in the Caribbean.
• He wanted to find a faster way to the East Indies (India and China)
• Discovered the New World and opened up for Exploration.
Lucas Vasquez De Ayllon• 1526• Spain• Explored South Carolina
and Georgia Coast.• To establish a settlement
on the North American coast.
• First European to set foot in Georgia. Unsuccessfully attempted a settlement.
Pedro Menendez• 1565• Spain• Florida• To establish a
settlement in North America
• Founded St. Augustine, Spain’s first successful settlement in North America
Jean Ribault
• 1562• France• Explored coast of north Florida
and Georgia• Trade with the natives and to
establish a settlement in North America.
• Established Charles fort in the Carolinas, which is north of Savannah
Jamestown Settlers
• 1607• England• Virginia• New life in New World
and new business opportunities.
• Establish the first permanent English colony in North America

• 1620• England• Massachusetts• Looking for Religious
freedom• Established first

Spanish Missions in GA• A mission is a religious
outpost set up to spread Catholicism to the indigenous people.
• The Spanish used religion to assimilate the Native Americans into the Spanish Colonial System.
• Time span of Missions in GA: 1568-1684

• This was the FIRST permanent settlement in the New World
• Soon, posts were established on Georgia’s barrier islands– Ex)

Hernando de Soto’s Journey Through GA
• 1540• Spain• Explored GA and Southeastern
US.• He was in search of Gold• The results of De Soto’s
expedition was a failure to find gold and brought death and destruction to the natives.
