Restaurant recommendations (near central station)

PALETTE The Palette – a successful mix of coffee, bar and restaurant – is located on a side street just off the busy Bahnhofstrasse. In the entrance area, guests sit at the bar and compile their own menu. On offer are vegetarian as well as meat or fish specialties ‒ served in small portions and therefore ideal as tasters to share. To drink, there are freshly pressed fruit juices, cocktails or a cool beer. In the restaurant, darks walls and plushy fabrics contrast with light-colored elements, giving rise to a relaxed atmosphere. In fine weather, guests can sit at tables in front of the restaurant and watch the hustle and bustle on the lively Bahnhofstrasse. At Neni, this is known as “Balagan style”. This can be understood as a kind of culinary chaos – which arises when the tables are crowded with dozens of plates and bowls containing mouth-watering mezze and main dishes. The Sacred Restaurant with Vegelateria Conscious eating is booming – there is no doubt about it. But this restaurant has not simply sprung up in response to a passing fad. Here, you notice very quickly that it is founded on real passion and commitment. The Sacred offers a different buffet every day, from which guests can choose from a wide selection of hot and cold dishes; the prices charged are according to weight. Particularly popular are the fresh ice-cream creations, which are like Italian gelati but without any animal-based ingredients. Closed in Sunday.

JOSEF The menu at the Josef is a delight for adventurous food lovers: elderberry risotto with meadow flowers, fried octopus with fava beans and mint – or how about onsen egg with edos, hop shoots and Belperknolle cheese? The dishes make you so curious, that it is difficult to choose. But the Josef has come up with a solution to this dilemma: all the dishes are served in small portions, so that guests can combine and sample whatever they please. Three dishes are generally enough to satisfy a normal appetite. Closed on Sunday. Josef, Gasometerstrasse 24, 8005 Zürich, Phone: +41 44 271 65 95 [email protected] , www.josef.ch

KAUFLEUTEN The Kaufleuten is an institution in Zurich. The 100-year-old building is home to a cosmos of gastronomy, culture and nightlife. MARKTHALLE Here, guests eat what is put on the table. That poses no problem with the dishes served at the Restaurant Markthalle – for they are simple, tasty menus made from fresh, seasonal products. The “Plats du Jour” at lunchtime and the more opulent evening menus change daily and are freshly prepared depending on what is currently available on the market. In the evening, large platters are placed in the middle of the long tables, so guests can share and eat together. The wine to accompany the food comes from the Südhang wine merchant, which also sells wines from small artisan vintners at the Viadukt shopping mall. Closed on Sunday. Locations for summer evenings

Frau Gerolds Garten What started in summer 2012 as a temporary project at the foot of the Prime Tower ‒ a beer garden complete with kitchen garden ‒ has since grown into something of an institution, with shops, art, a garden community and a vibrant program of events. In summer, the locale is open daily until midnight. Mrs Gerold has transformed the austere industrial location into a warm and friendly meeting place for city lovers. The terrace is not just the place that enjoys the sun the longest, but also provides a dramatic view over the railway tracks and, in fine weather, as far as the mountain peaks in the distance. In fall, when the leaves in the garden start to change color, Mrs Gerold opens the doors to her charming wooden hut, which in the cold months of the year serves as a cozy place of refuge complete with open fireplace and fondue.
