It started with an High Tech Adventure (1987 – 2001)
Since 1987 the Biel School of Engineering has been involved in the development of solar and electric racing cars, called Spirit of Biel. Since then the development of permanent magnet based DC-Brushless and Synchronous Machines has continued in numerous innovations. Even almost 20 years later, in 2001/3/5 and in 2007 the Dutch team won the World solar Challenge with the Biel In-Wheel Motor.
The same technology (Maximum Power Point Tracker, Brushless Motor Drive and Permanent Magnet Motor) has now be used to create an entirely different product: the Swiss Solar Water Pump Drive.

T Simple Schematics: Easy to install
• The photovoltaic module is connected to a electronics, which at the same time maximizes the input power from the panel (BOOST) and controls the motor output power (INVERTER). There is no need for a electrical storage unit like a battery as the solar power is directly converted into mechanical (pumping) power. The energy is stored in the elevated water tank .
• StorageFull and RunDry Sensors can be added to avoid spilling water or damaging the pump.

E Product Idea: it’s not a pump, it’s a pump drive!
„The Swiss Solar Water Pump Drive can be used as a simple extension for new or existing hand pumps like the Taradev or india Mark II Pump. The solar power from a small 40/80 or 120W panel is converted through a high efficiency electronic and motor with the help of a gearbox and some simple mechanics to the mechanical up and down movement required for water pumping. For a full sunny day the drive equals a man pumping for five hours pumping without a break.“
At the same time, the original manual operating capability is still fully functional!

Application Example: Gravity Feed Drip Irrigation
Irrigation Systems
• Small scale Irrigation in rural areas without electricity
• The Micro Solar Water Pump is combined best with a Drip Irrigation System,
• Micro Entrepreneurs, who provide irrigation services for framers
Home use Systems
• Household water supply systems
Fruit, vegetables, flowers
• high value crop growers with increased water requirements
Where labor is short/costly
• Providing Water manually does bind labor force in a family, which could be used more profitably

Easy Add-on to existing hand-pumps
Application Example: Haiti November 2012
Can be added to existing treadle pumps
Adaptable to a variety of Applications The motor output of 1’500rpm can be reduced by a simple IEC standard gearbox with high efficiency to about 40rpm. With some mechanical adaption almost all hand driven pumps (rope, treadle and piston pumps can be operated with our Swiss Solar Water Pump Drive.
Several hand driven pumps has been tested in our labs and are since a few month under testing at CMES, Bangladesh.
The existing hand drive or the treadle mechanism can still be kept as a security measure in case of excess water requirements or longer bad weather periods
The Swiss Solar Water Pump Drive will adapt the speed in order to adapt to the solar insulation therefore if used with positive displacement pumps, the pressure will be maintained and even at low sun pumping up to 30m is achievable.

Workshop Bangladesh 2011: Field trial Phase
In April 2011 Caritas Switzerland invited ennos gmbh, BFH Bern, IDE (International Developments Enterprises) and CMES (Centre for Mass Education in Science) to participate at a workshop in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The aim was to present the solar water pump system to organizations, who are involved in giving support to farmers in rural areas. The workshop has been held at the place of MAWTS, Institute of Technology, Engineering & Technological Services. Following countries are testing the solar water pump system in clusters of 8-12 systems: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Ghana, Mali, Haiti and Honduras. The testing phase will take until June 2013

Buidling up maintenance and service personnel by providing debugging tools
• The quick tester allows to check the correct sequence and operation of the hall sensors in the electrical machine
• Together with the simple motor test bench and the solar simulator, the operation of the Swiss Solar Water pump drive can be always verified
• During 4 month personnel from Bern University of Applied Sciences has trained a team of technicians at CMES in Dhaka, Bangladesh to provide support and maintenance during the field trial period and afterwards

About the Micro Solar Water Pump
The Simple Swiss Solar Water Pump is based on three original ideas:
1.Downsizing the system to cover needs of smaller groups and families/farmers and to reduce the initial investment costs and allow private ownership.
2.Increase system efficiency to reduce overall system cost, because a better electronic and motor/pump will reduce the required solar panel surface for a given water quantity
3.Localization: Since the beginning we have aimed to produce the complete system locally in India with local technology and manufacturing capabilities. This will also reduce the price, but it also has a double impact on the economic side with creating jobs in a renewable energy economy.

Performance
With the Swiss Solar Water Pump drive and a high efficiency piston pump it is possible to have up to 5’6000 liters per day with a water lift of 7 meters.
Water output in litre per day depends on the water lift in meter. The system has been designed for a possible water lift up to 25m, although practicable water quantities (>2000ltr/day) will be possible up to 14m (80W)

Competitive Analysis
Advantages of the solar pump compared to the mini diesel pump:
• Solar pump systems will require very little maintenance and operation cost
• Solar pumps are CO2 neutral (operational aspect)
• It can be shown that the solar pump and the mini diesel pump produce the same yearly cost (Life cycle Cost Analysis over a period of 5 years).
• The expected live time of solar pumps is higher than of the diesel pump (live expectancy of solar panel is 20 years, electronic and motor 10 years)
• Small size allows for easy transportation and multiuse as well as creation of microbusiness (watering services for farmers)
• The cost of solar panels are decreasing at an interesting rate year after year
