Why LED Lighting is Best for 55+ HousingEnergy efficiency is important to the older buyer because of

the impact on the environment and especially the impact on their wallets. In fact, 90 percent said they would purchase energy-efficient products if it would lower their energy bill.

Long-term financial security is a primary driver for this demographic, so they are willing to invest in green solutions now in order to save later.

The Benefits of LED

LED sources are a great solution for aging inhabitants for a number of reasons, including:

• Safety Benefits: Traditional incandescent sources waste energy – especially through heat energy. LED lamps produce almost no heat, which eliminates the risk of burns.• Energy Savings: LED lamps can pay for themselves through energy and maintenance savings, while providing aesthetically pleasing lighting. So although the initial investment will be higher than a standard incandescent source, the long term energy savings offer a healthy return.• Low Maintenance: An LED lamp can last for decades, making LED options a low-maintenance solution. Homeowners can say goodbye to climbing a ladder every year or so to change those burnt out lamps. The long life expectancy of LED lamps is of high value.• Light Output: As we grow older, our eyes get more sensitive to light sources. Luckily, increases in efficacy (lumens per watt) and warm white color consistency make LED options gentle on aging eyes.• Color Output: The key to selecting the right LED fixtures for aging individuals is to have a warm color temperature (2700-3000K) and high color-rendering index (90 CRI or above).

LED - Changing Lighting Trends in the Market

Louie Morales, Product Manager

LED is a very exciting market for us today. We’re able to do many new things that we weren’t able to do in the past because we were limited by the shape of the lamp. But with LED, those molds are being broken. Due to the slim nature of LED drivers, we have very low profile products such as the “Bingo” which acts as decorative wall art. Also, with LED we’re able to control light coloring more carefully and help customers match the desired color temperature in their home. All Progress Lighting LED products offer dimmable functionality, allowing for complete control over the light output. LED replacement models offer huge cost savings over traditional incandescent fixtures as well as provide significantly longer lifetime. The LED industry is really a semi-conductor industry that is moving at break-neck speed. As we look at new LED products, we’re continuing to break the molds of lighting functionality, trends and efficiency.

5 BOLD, BEAUTIFUL & UNEXPECTEDWAYS TO LIGHT WITH PENDANTS

Pendants are a style of lighting that everyone can agree on – mainly because there is such a wide selection of

colors, materials and sizes to choose from. There’s truly a fit for every design taste. When it comes to placing pendants, we’ve noticed that designers are thinking outside the box (or outside the kitchen island) and coming up with new and creative ways to use pendant lighting. Here are some out of the ordinary applications for pendants that may spark creativity in your own home.

Group pendants above a breakfast nook. Create a beautiful spectacle above a kitchen nook by grouping pendants at varying heights. The display of our Academy pendants exudes a contemporary feel with their whimsical school-house profile and on-trend clear glass make-up.

Display oversized pendants above a dining table. Oversized pendants can be used to line a dining table for a modern approach to entertaining. Our Haven pendants provide beneficial task lighting and a beautiful display – no matter where you are sitting.

Exchange your recessed lights for bold pendants. Looking for some general lighting applications with a little more pizzazz? Say good-bye to your recessed cans and hello to a stunning alternative in pendants. Look for large pendants with a

high lumen output and a clean lined design for this type of application. (See opposite page)

Light up your living area with a statement pendant. Since large-scale lighting is high on the wish list of today’s designers and homeowners, using a statement pendant in place of your traditional chandelier is a natural transition. Create a space where family and friends will love to linger with our Ashbury pendant, shown below.

Spice up your sitting area with elongated pendants. For hallways and foyers use pendants with a thinner profile. However, a display of elongated pendants grouped together can help fill your vertical space in a large room in a new and beautiful way.

Q1: Am I lighting in layers?

Q3: Am I using lighting in unexpected ways?

Q4: Have I installed dimmers?

Q5: Is my lighting focused?

Q2: Do my fixture styles further the designof my home? (See top image)

Are you feeling dissatisfied with your current home decor? Is the wall decor or color scheme you originally chose

not what you thought it would be? Before you change out the furniture, paint your walls or upgrade your floors, it’s important to make sure your lighting plan is one that complements your home’s current set-up and style. Without the right lighting – focal points, architectural details, unique textures and even colors can be lost, overlooked or nullified. Lighting has the ability to make or break the entire look and feel of your home – and the potential to transform your space from blah to beautiful.

Layered lighting helps you provide light where you need it (through task and accent lighting), while accounting for the general illumination of your space. A layered lighting approach considers using direct light for areas for completing everyday activities (such as the way pendant or under cabinet lighting provides functional lighting to kitchen countertops) – as well as general light sources (such as recessed lights, chandeliers or a close-to-ceiling fixture) to create ambiance.

Positioning fixtures in new and unexpected ways can breathe life into your home environment. Have you ever thought of adding a dazzling chandelier to your bathroom? Or, positioning statement pendants around your living room?

A quick dimmer installation can have a profound impact on your home – especially in areas intended for entertaining or relaxing. Consider installing dimmers in “zones” so you can control different areas of the same room to cater to activities in those spaces.

Accent lights can also add visual interest to your space – a spotlight on a unique wall texture or sculpture can further add to the overall design of your room.

Outdated lighting fixtures certainly affect the perceived value and beauty of your home. The right lighting not only furthers the design of your home, but can also be taken a step further

to where it even serves as a beautiful focal point. Statement fixtures can transform a room into a welcoming and well-designed environment. Installing fixtures that are in-style and correlate with your current design and color scheme is a cost-effective way to revive your favorite rooms.

THE PERFECT DINING ROOM FIXTURE

Chandeliers add beauty, ambience and functional illumination to your home. Perfect for entryways, above

dining room tables and as living room accents, the styles are far reaching – offering a widespread realm of design possibilities. When browsing through Houzz idea books, Pinterest pins or your favorite design magazine, the placement of chandeliers can often seem effortless. But in reality, when confronted with all the different options, choosing the right chandelier can feel overwhelming.

Streamline the decision making process with these quick tips on selecting the right size chandelier for your dining room.

1. If you are installing a chandelier and haven’t selected your furniture, add the length and width of the room (in feet) – which will give you the proper diameter for the fixture (in inches). So, if you have a 10 x 14 room, the diameter for your fixture should be 24 inches.

2. If you already have a table, it’s more important that the chandelier is proportionate to the table than the room. As a general rule of thumb, your chandelier should be approximately 1/2 to 3/4 the size of your table.

3. When hanging your chandelier, allow 30 to 32 inches from the table surface to the bottom of the chandelier.

Kitchen trend talk...

We’re back with Trend Talk and today we’re taking a closer look at trends influencing the heart of your home: the

kitchen. Get the skinny on the looks, finishes and designs that will make up this year’s most on-trend kitchens.

One-level workstations: Say good-bye to your high-low islands with a bar and counter at separate heights. A reason for this trend is the increasing popularity of the double island.

Double sinks: With multiple islands, we are also noticing a trend towards double sinks. Typically, the second sink is used for meal preparation, located in the secondary island.

Statement light fixtures: Large, eye-catching light fixtures, especially above the entertainment island, are also popular for kitchens this year.

White appliances: White is becoming more popular than stainless steel when it comes to kitchen appliances. The Whirlpool White Ice collection is an example of this.

Oversized island seating: Formal dining areas are being replaced with extended island seating for the whole family.

What elements are you planning for your kitchen remodel or new home?

THE DO’S & DON’TS OFBATHROOM LIGHTING

A thoughtful, expertly designed lighting plan can provide years

of beauty and functionality in your bathroom setting. Bathroom lighting helps set the mood for a relaxing space to unwind, while also allowing you to complete everyday grooming tasks efficiently. Consider these “do’s and don’ts” in your new home or your next bathroom renovation.

Do Light in layers: As with any room of the home, be sure to consider task, ambient and accent lighting – but this is especially important in the bathroom. As the room where you start and end your day and complete everyday tasks, lighting is an extremely important design element. A single fixture isn’t enough – complete your design with recessed fixtures, wall sconces and vanity lighting.

Don’t Shy away from fashionable pieces: The bathroom isn’t just about function – a fashionable fixture such as a bold chandelier makes for a stunning centerpiece. Don’t shy away from fixtures that make a statement.

Do Add lighting in your shower: The desire for a layered lighting design in the bathroom has lead to a need for lighting in the shower. Wet-located, recessed fixtures – especially those that contribute to an energy efficient approach – are ideal. Progress Lighting’s P8022 series is an LED fixture classified for wet locations and designed for recessed and flush mount applications. The sleek and simple profile mirrors the bathroom design trend to incorporate simplistic, but functional, elements into the bathroom.

Don’t Choose fixtures with exposed bulbs: While this is a popular design trend, save this style for your kitchen, entryways and bedrooms. For the bathroom, you want to diffuse light through opaque lamp shades for smooth, even illumination.

Do Consider energy efficient lighting solutions: With new government regulations and increased awareness of the value of green design in home building, energy efficient lighting options are mainstream. Fixtures that beautifully conceal CFL lamps, incorporate GU24 lamp and base sockets, or feature LED sources are trending lighting solutions for the bathroom.
