Those infected felt themselves penetrated by pain throughout their whole bodies, and felt undermined. Then there developed on the thighs, or upper arms a boil about the size of a small bean, which the people called “burn boil.” This infected the whole body, and penetrated it so the patient violently vomited blood.

Dearest Mother,

I am so glad to finally write to you and that these horrible days are now behind us. We have lost so many of our brothers here in the monastery and I weep for Maria and Philip. I thank God that you have survived this pestilence. Many are saying that it will be back soon, but I know it is now gone.

God has sent us this pestilence. Our people had been too corrupt and greedy. There has been even evil within the church. We failed God in the Crusades and he commanded us to regain the Holy Land. Our weak faith has brought this upon us.

I know many say it was caused by the miasma, the bad odors, but I cannot believe it. If that were true then where has the pestilence gone? The stench of death still hangs in the air. Why then are there no more getting sick and dying? Simple! God has brought the disease and seen to forgive us who he has not taken. Many have asked me why Gold would allow monks like me to die. They do not see the true miracle. Our Pope has not gotten sick nor has those around him. God has protected them. There is no other way to explain God’s favor than to look at the health of the Pope.
