Inadequate cleaning materials can spread the potentially infected spills rather than containing them.

Some disinfectants may stain; smell unpleasant; be ineffective; irritate skin; and release chlorine gas.

REGULATIONSSpecific legislation on biological agents such as blood borne viruses (BBV's) is contained in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).

Employers have a legal duty to assess the risk employees face from infections within their workplace and provide suitable precautions to protect their health.

These include - formal risk assessments, training for those employees tasked with cleaning up after an incident, safe systems of work (SSOW), suitable decontamination equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) and audit procedures to ensure they effectively reduce the risk of cross infection and cross contamination.

All RESPONSE® biohazard kits containing super absorbent powders, as featured, include the premium deodorised version as standard, which is up to ten times as effective as other brands of powder - and reduces unpleasant odours.

FACT 014 - CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEANInfection control is not simply a matter of covering yourself wall-to-wall in anti-bacterial products. It's about understanding the major causes of cross contamination and promoting a conscious awareness of the risks. The answer is probably no, as the majority of organisations don't. Quite simply no, they are not. Some products are advertised as anti-bacterial, others as anti-viral. This does not necessarily mean they can kill both bacteria and viruses and indeed there are other infectious organisms such as fungi, yeasts and spores.

Many infection control products have an alcohol base and whilst effective this has no lasting effects (i.e. because of evaporation) and may dry skin after prolonged use. What's more alcohol does not kill all micro-organisms, for example Clostridium Difficile.

In addition, some infection control products will be rendered useless when mixed or used in conjunction with other competitor products; owing to differences in formulation.

FACT 015:Cross infection can take place via: hand to mouth contact with faeces or other contaminated objects; breathing in aerosols of projectile vomit; contact with blood or other body fluids which may be contaminated with blood; through splashes of blood or other body fluids to eyes, the nose and mouth.

FACT 016:Some people may be more susceptible than others e.g. those with reduced immunity because of pre-existing illness and those in high risk jobs when suitable precautions are not taken.

FACT 017:According to Dr. Jacqueline Randle, Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine and Health Services at the University of Nottingham, most hand sanitization products are purely anti-bacterial and so don’t kill viruses. She states: “swine flu and seasonal flu are viruses and entirely different from bacterial infections. The labelling on most products does not make this clear. Alcohol gels are also being used widely and do have anti-viral properties although these evaporate quickly. There are also some newer products, which kill viruses and have residual effects.”
