exetreme imagination is a unique, city-wide, multi-media, interactive festival for children of all ages. It’s about much more than books, but when it comes to authors we have a stellar guest-list. For younger fans, we have four genuine superstars at the Northcott; we have the wonderful illustrator Petr Horacek; and for older readers a quartet of young adult writers who between them have won more awards than you could shake a stick at, including the controversial Carnegie Medal winner Kevin Brooks. It all adds up to a rare treat, so don’t miss out!
mal peetexetreme imagination Festival Curator
So many children and young people are sinking their teeth into great books these days, and this week exetreme imagination offers exciting things for both the avid and the most reluctant readers, so I’m thrilled to be a part of it! The more reading that kids are doing, the more writing they’re doing too – and it’s wonderful to be able to encourage them to pursue that creative streak with a week like this, with events like Darren Shan’s talk, Mal Peet & Meg Rosoff’s author event, and Ellen Renner’s writing workshops for the more creative reader wanting to take books into their own hands!

the red and the black: violence in contemporary teenage fiction
Wed 29 Oct, 5.30pm - 6.30pm, FREE
Exeter Library, Rougemont Room
Authors Kevin Brooks and Anthony McGowan discuss the subject of violence in teenage fiction. Do authors have a duty to reflect the real world of teenage violence? Is there a temptation to glamorise the subject? Do authors too easily fall back on violence to get themselves out of a narrative hole? Two award-winning writers of young adult fiction go head to head to thrash out the issues.
Kevin was born in Exeter, has written eleven Young Adult novels and won The Carnegie Medal 2014 for The Bunker Diary. Anthony is a multi-award winning writer of fiction including The Knife That Killed Me, and a screen adaptation is scheduled for release this year.

The series combines fast-paced action with thought-provoking moral questions and has captivated readers worldwide. Darren says, “It’s a big, sprawling, vicious tale ... a grisly piece of escapism, and a barbed look at the world in which we live. Each book in the series is short, fast-paced and bloody. A high body-count is guaranteed!”

exetreme imagination is an exciting biennial festival of literature for children
and young people, organised by a partnership of the major arts and culture
organisations in Exeter. We want to enthuse and inspire children and young
people across Exeter, showcasing high quality writing for children, and
fostering talent in writing by children and young people. We will be bringing
great children’s authors and creative artists into schools, communities,
and arts venues to work alongside children and young people, sharing their
experiences as writers and engaging young people in the power of the written
word. So let your imagination go exetreme!
