Why participate in the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA)?In the field of design there are many rankings and a growing number of design competitions and would-be designators of “the best.” While imitation may be the highest form of flattery, only IDEA, is known as “the Oscars of Design.” After 32 consecutive years, IDEA maintains its well-deserved reputation for being the preeminent international design competition. And IDEA winners worldwide are held up as shining examples of great design uniquely capable of influencing the world around us and shaping the future. With it’s storied history, impartial jurying process, international pool of exceptional entrants, expert jurors, breadth of categories and forward-thinking criteria, IDEA 2012 is uniquely positioned among its competitors to shine a spotlight on design genius.

Judging Assessment CriteriaThe jury assesses all product concepts with the following criteria:

• Innovation • Benefit to the user • Responsibility• Benefit to the client • Visual appeal and appropriate aesthetics• Design Research Category Insights – usability, emotional factors, unmet needs, testing rigor and reliability• Design Strategy Category – internal factors and methods, strategic value and implementation

Entry ConditionsOpen to everyone, students, professionals and design enthusiasts worldwide. Student may enter either the student category at a discounted rate or may choose to enter designs in professional categories and compete against the best designers worldwide. Previous years’ entries that did not win may be resubmitted if the entry still meets all of the other criteria. Designs may be entered in multiple categories, as long as each entry must be purchased and submitted separately.

DistributionProducts must have been placed in distribution, and available for sale in its final form to its intended end users through normal sales channels between February 2010 and February 2011. Student entries must have been submitted to the school between February 2010 and February 2011. Design Concept entries must have been finalized or submitted to the client between February 2010 and February 2011 and may not be scheduled for production. Research designs must have been submitted to the client or school between February 2007 and February 2012.
