concreto naranja amarga y notas amaderadas.

the alchemy of the elements. The
perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena has

touches of bitter orange and notes

Homage to the Havana
The architect Tomás Alía has paid homage to Havana
cigars by creating a humidor that perfectly
encapsulates the unmistakable style and elegance
of a good “vitola”. His is a sculptural creation based on
various trays that pivot on the same axis, opening out like a
fan and featuring two colours: black for the trays, and gold
for the bases and the centrepole. It holds 30 Havanas and
is divided into seven trays, of which six contain boxes for
five cigars each. The top tray holds a special box for the
lighter and the cigar cutter. Orders through the Tomás Alía

The taste of friendship
Glenmorangie Companta (the Gaelic word
for friendship) is the latest whisky to join
the famous Scottish distillery’s award-
winning Private Edition range. It is matured in
two types of barrel from France. One belongs
to one of the most famous vineyards in the
Burgundy region, Clos de Tart, renowned
the world over for its Grand Cru wines.
The other barrel, used for extra-
maturing Companta, comes from the
Collines du Rhône, a French region
with its own Appellation Contrôlée.
These barrels are used for aging a
wine that is characteristically
sweet. The combination of the
two barrels makes Companta a
whisky laden with exquisite
nuances. Price: 85 euros.
dulce. La combinación de estos dos ti-
pos de barricas hacen de Companta
un whisky cargado de exquisitos
matices. Precio: 85 euros.

For demanding travellers
Technical perfection has been part of the DNA
of Jaeger-LeCoultre since the firm was founded
in 1833. An example of its incessant search for
excellence is the Duomètre Unique Travel Time, which
offers a brand new solution for travellers who are
constantly changing time zone.
The new model is a milestone. It is the first world-time
watch that enables adjustment to the minute of the second
time zone, regardless of the current time difference.
The brand has given its Dual-Wing system a
revolutionary interpretation. This is in reality a manually-
wound dual calibre formed by two mechanisms, one
giving the reference time and the other the time in the
second zone. They share the same regulating organ
although each has its own energy source.
Duomètre Unique Travel Time is presented in a 42 mm rose
gold case and costs 38,200 euros.

ENHORABUENA. ¿ERA
He’s a fantastic conversationalist.
Talkative, direct and charming, Javier
Cámara (Albelda de Iregua, La Rioja,
1967) is interviewed in Pancomido,
an attractive bread shop-cafeteria that
resembles a French boulangerie. And
he’s got a lot to say, because after his
victory at the Goya awards, his latest film,
La vida inesperada, a comedy shown at
the Malaga festival, opens this month.
Cámara, directed by Jorge Torregrosa
and co-starring with Raúl Arévalo, plays a
luckless actor in New York.
CONGRATULATIONS. AFTER FIVE
PREVIOUS GOYA NOMINATIONS YOU
FINALLY WON, ON THE SIXTH OCCASION.
WAS THAT A THORN IN YOUR SIDE?
No, it really wasn’t. The first time I was
nominated it did excite me because
everything was very new, and

... y acción
...and action
¡Me encanta volar! Y cuanto más lejos, mejor.
above all because [actor] Santiago Segura was convinced I was going to win,
and my head was throbbing. So when I didn’t win, I thought: “But Santiago knew
they were going to give it to me and they ended up giving it to someone else!”
IN YOUR HOMETOWN THEY’VE NAMED A SQUARE AFTER YOU.
Yes, the response there has been impressive. That square is right where I was
born. My family no longer lives there, but you can imagine how happy my
friends are, my mother...
IN ADDITION, YOU DON’T COME FROM A FAMILY OF ARTISTS.
No. My father was a farmer. In fact they used to call him “the peasant.”
AND THEN YOU WENT TO LOGROÑO, AND LATER TO THE RESAD SCHOOL OF DRAMATIC
ART IN MADRID WITH JUST 25,000 PESETAS. DID YOU EVER THINK YOU’D GET THIS FAR?
No way. I never dreamed this would happen. You never think you’ll receive so many
gifts over the course of your career in the form of films, theatre, wonderful dinners
with people you’d never even dreamed
of meeting, and learning so much in
this profession. That’s why it’s a magical
profession, because there are people of
all ages. Those with more experience
share it with the younger ones, and are
nourished by them.
IN LA VIDA INESPERADA, DIRECTED BY
JORGE TORREGROSA, YOU PLAY AN
ACTOR WHO LIVES IN NEW YORK AND
ISN’T HAVING MUCH SUCCESS.
He’s a person who is in the wrong
place. Elvira Lindo, who wrote the
script, has provided some fantastic
characters, very romantic. They are
people who are hung up in a time and a
moment. There are many people who
dream the American Dream, but right
now that dream is also in France and
Latin America. In fact, Latin America is
going through a wonderful period for
films. But it’s true that one seeks the
American Dream as an actor because
films there are fascinating and because
New York is a city that entraps you.
BUT IT’S HARD TO GIVE UP A DREAM.
It’s hard, but life gives you other
opportunities, and you must figure out
how to use them. That’s what the movie
is about. Brave people must be able to
reinvent themselves. There are people
who fall and get right up again, but also
people who reinvent themselves.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO AN ACTOR
WHO’S NOT MAKING PROGRESS, A
FRUSTRATED ACTOR?
An actor isn’t frustrated as long as he
is able to memorise a text and stand
on a stage to recite it. We often only
value the successful actor, the one
who’s in the news media, but I know
very happy actors who want to work
in the theatre, and are able to do so.
In the neighbourhoods, in theatre
companies...
YOU WERE IN THE ALMODÓVAR FILM I’M
SO EXCITED, WHICH TAKES PLACE ON A
PLANE. DO YOU LIKE TO FLY?
I love to fly! And the longer the trip,
the better.

two ‘duolevel’ barrels with two fibreglass springs and its AirfreeTM technology, which
creates a vacuum that prevents loss of energy consumption through friction.
This year, in a limited edition of 50 timepieces, the Parisian firm has presented the
Rotonde Tourbillon Chronograph 8 Days Power Reserve in 18-carat rose gold, with a
manufactured hand-wound calibre and a price of € 164,000.
In 2007, A. Lange & Söhne launched the surprising Lange 31, so-called because of its
31-day power reserve. Another great contribution was its constant-force escapement,
which delivers energy in a uniform way.
Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar ‘Terraluna’, one of this year’s novelties, has a 14-
day power reserve. Its hand-wound movement has a double barrel with a tension
readjustment mechanism for unvarying amplitude and high accuracy. It comes in red
gold (€ 188,100) or white gold (€ 189,100) versions with a solid silver dial.
In 2005, Vacheron Constantin presented the Saint Gervais to mark its 250th
anniversary. The watch broke records with the longest power reserve to date, 250 hours,
with four barrels coupled to a tourbillon regulator and a perpetual calendar.
In 2014, the firm released the Patrimony 14 Days Traditionelle Tourbillon (€ 336,600),
which has a power reserve, as its name indicates, of two weeks. Its hand-wound calibre
with tourbillon is distinguished with the Geneva Seal.
The watches created by Panerai in the 1940s for the military were equipped with
the Angelus SF 240 calibre, with a power reserve of 8 days. The firm took this as the
inspiration for the first calibre of its own, the manually-wound P.2000, with GMT and
8-day power reserve with three barrels.
One of this year’s novelties is the Luminor Base 8 Days, which beats to the rhythm of the
hand-wound P.5000 calibre. This is made up of 127 components and has an 8-day
30
The power reserve is an especially
useful complication on hand-
wound mechanical watches
because it shows the energy
still to be released from the mainspring
and translates it into hours or days. For a
watch to function at a regular rhythm, it
must be at least 30 per cent wound.
Energy is generated in mechanical
watches either manually, by winding
them up, or automatically, thanks to the
variations in the oscillating mass with
wrist movement. It is stored in a spring
placed inside a barrel with gear teeth.
The length and thinness of the spring,
and the efficiency of the rest of the
mechanism, determine how long a watch
will take to wind down.
The record for the longest power reserve
has been held since 2014 by the Hublot
MP-05 ‘La Ferrari’, with 50 days of energy
stored in 11 barrels arranged lineally so as
to form the spinal column of the watch. It
has a titanium case with black PVD and an
invisible hand-wound calibre, and only 50
numbered pieces have been made.

power reserve. It has a polished steel case and white dial, and its price is € 5,800.
Jaeger-LeCoultre has come up with some major landmarks in this field. It was the first
firm to present an automatic watch with power reserve indicator, the Powermatic,
which it fitted with the automatic LeCoultre 481 calibre. It took another decisive step
in 2007 with the Dual Wing 380 calibre for watches with complications, which had
two separate mechanisms with their own barrels and mainsprings. Thirty years later, it
surpassed itself with the Dual Wing 381 calibre, in which the module of the watch and
its complications are each fed by their own mainspring, leading to an unprecedented
degree of exactitude for a complicated watch.
This year, it has launched the Master Grande Tradition à Quantième Perpétuel 8 Jours
SQ, whose hand-wound mechanism has a power reserve of 8 days. It appears in a limited
edition of 200 timepieces with a 42 mm white gold case and silver-toned grained dial
on a skeletonised movement, enhanced with guilloché engraving and translucent blue
enamel. Its price is € 97,000.
In 2011, Blancpain made its surprising contribution with a previously unseen
method of indicating the power reserve. L-Evolution Tourbillon was a first because
it showed a complication on a dial integrated directly with the oscillating mass it
was connected to. This was a novelty because the indications are normally shown
on either the dial or the mechanism.
One day more than that is the power reserve of the new Villeret, which beats to the
rhythm of an automatic mechanism. It is aesthetically sober, with a 42 mm ‘double
pomme’ red gold case and a dial in Grand Feu enamel.
Oris wants to celebrate its 110th anniversary in style, and has done so with the first
mechanical calibre to have been wholly designed by the brand in the last 35 years.
This is the 110 calibre with a 10-day power reserve, though equipped with a single
barrel. It is innovative because the mainspring measures 1.8 m when extended but
adapts to a single barrel without having to increase the size of the mechanism. Oris
has patented the power reserve indicator. It comes in versions with a case in steel
(€ 4,450) or rose gold (€ 11,900).

When the door of the small plane opened, he drew a
blank. During the 30 seconds of free-fall before his
parachute opened, Gerard Fernández, a 31-year-
old Catalan industrial engineer and entrepreneur,
had to convincingly make his business pitch for financing in front of
a camera. “I was lucky: they understood it well and I won the prize,”
20,000 euros which in just a few months he has used to create five
prototypes of a safety helmet aimed at reducing work-related
deaths and which could be under production within a year. The
electronic device inside the hardhat measures the heart rate and
the humidity and temperature of the person wearing it, and even
accesses his medical history (diseases, allergies, etc.). It will activate
an alarm when there is an accident on the job. The helmet is the
work of Thelmet, a start-up firm established by Gerard and some
friends, who have spent “a lot of time and effort” on the project.
While the headquarters is in Barcelona, the software was devised
by some colleagues in Silicon Valley, where these businessmen
want to open a branch. All of them have their own jobs, but when
they get off work they spend part of their time at Thelmet without
pay. The idea is to dedicate three years to looking for more
financing and to testing the product. They have already done much
at the Mobile World Congress, thanks to the GSM risk prevention
company, and they are preparing a pilot test on a site that employs
200 workers, run by the Rubau building firm. In exchange, Thelmet
guarantees that its associates will be the first to receive the
product, and at a discount: they feel that these synergies are more
important than money. And if the plan doesn’t work, they will not
have lost money and will not have to pay back a loan or rely on
crowd founding, although they don’t rule this out. The helmet has
been designed by Woodpeckers, a young, innovative firm that was
co-founded by Gerard Fernández and where he works as creative
director, with clients like Adidas, BMW and Panasonic.

Dancing is life: one must generously exhibit its beauty on
the stage,“ says the prestigious dancer, choreographer
and director Víctor Ullate (Zaragoza 1947). Ullate,
one of the most popular Spanish dancers on the
international level, has had a solid career. Two master teachers
–María de Ávila and Antonio Ruiz Soler– and 14 years as the
principal dancer of Maurice Béjart‘s Ballet, made him what
he was and still is: a great lover of dance who also loves to
teach it. But then teaching and discipline have always been his
watchwords, both as director of the Spanish National Ballet and
at the school and company that bear his name, which works with
the Spanish ministry of culture and deals with all facets of dance.
At the beginning of the 21st century, he thought long and
hard and decided to transmit his rich artistic talents to future
generations, especially to children from disadvantaged
backgrounds. He thus created the Víctor Ullate Dance
Foundation, “to promote all facets of classic ballet and
the technical and human training of dancers who lack
economic resources.”
Last month, among other activities, his students took part in
a gala performance to raise funds for the ‘We are all strange,
we are all unique’ movement, created by the Spanish
Federation for Rare and Neuromuscular Diseases and the
Isabel Gemio Foundation. The aim is to support the more
than three million Spaniards who suffer from these diseases
and to promote research. Ullate has won many awards,
among them the National Dance Prize (1989), the Fine Arts
Gold Medal (1996) and the Max Theatre Prize (2007). Víctor
Ullate expresses his solidarity through his greatest talent: his
passion for dance.

This Madrid native is part Spanish and part Swedish.
Although the family business had to do with printing
plants, Jorge de Haro felt the call of the sea from an early
age. At first this meant cruising in a Zodiac that his parents
had on the coast of Granada, “an important craft at the time,” he
says now. Later there were sailing classes in Galicia and days spent
sailing with his uncles in Swedish waters.
These experiences would cement his vocation, and when he finished
his studies at the Kotska de Ciudalacampo School in Madrid, he went
to Southampton (England) where he earned an engineering degree
in Ship Science and a master’s in Yacht and Small Craft.
He did training at the De Hoop shipyard in Holland and at the
Bazán naval construction firm in Cartagena, in southeast Spain,
then worked with the important North Wind and Duarry boat
builders, where he developed a line of pneumatic launches. In
2004, attracted by the America’s Cup, he travelled to Valencia
as a spectator. He found some work there, and in 2007 acquired
Navaltec, a chain of shops dedicated to the sale and service of
recreational yachting material.
In 2012 he was named president of the VLCBS (Valencia Boat
Show). De Haro knew that organising a boat show for the first time
would be a real challenge. “Although in the past it had been very
complicated, we believed in the potential of Valencia based on its
organisational capacities and because of its location, equidistant
from the Balearic Islands, Barcelona and Madrid.” He was also aware
of the fact that sailing was going through a crisis and that public
institutions should help support it. “Sailing has a certain stigma in
that many people think it is only for the wealthy classes, and that
those classes should pay for it themselves. But it’s also an activity
that could be much more accessible if it didn’t suffer from taxes and
maintenance charges.” For this reason the Valencia Boat Show (24
to 28 April, Marina Juan Carlos I) tries so support sailing: entry is free
and there are many events programmed for the public: “We try to
get the different sailing federations and the exhibitors to organise
events that visitors can take part in.” And the formula works: in this,
his second edition, there will be 25 per cent more exhibitors than last
year, and attendance is expected to be up 30 per cent. Much of this is
thanks to Jorge de Haro, a businessman who feels that an
entrepreneur should have ambition, goals and methods and be a
little crazy, “because it is feelings that motivate us.”.

Empezó a funcionar
como hotel en 1902, cuando el barón
Ustinov, dueño del Park Hotel de Jaffa
(entonces Palestina) y abuelo del actor
Peter Ustinov, pidió a los americanos que
hospedaran a unos clientes.

shipwreck in which they lost four daughters, and the death of their son
from scarlet fever, they moved to Jerusalem with other members of
their Christian church. In 1881, they lived in the Old City of Jerusalem,
where the Palestinian population called them “the Americans.” The group
grew in size and bought a villa, which at the time was in the middle of the
countryside, that belonged to a Palestinian named Rabbah Daoud Amin Effendi

Americans occupied it, the mansion came to be known as the American colony,
and today it is the Hotel American Colony.

tas y escritores.

(then Palestine) and the grandfather of actor Peter Ustinov, asked the Americans to
provide lodging for some of his guests.
Since 1980, the management of the hotel has been in Swiss hands, although its
owners are still the Spaffords. The fact that it is not owned by either Palestinians or
Israelis helps maintain “its spirit of neutrality and its position as a meeting place for all
the communities,“ says Brugnatelli. “It’s a place where it is still possible to debate.”
The American Colony, located in eastern Jerusalem –the part where the Palestinians
live and occupied by Israel since 1967– is a meeting point for different NGOs,
journalists, politicians, artists and writers. You can have a coffee on its beautiful
patio next to former British primer minister Tony Blair, who heads the Quartet on
the Middle East that seeks a peace accord between Palestinians and Israelis. The
Quartet has occupied 20 rooms in the hotel for four years.
At one of the tables in the patio, Lawrence of Arabia sat with Lowell Thomas, the
American journalist who made famous the adventures of this mythic British army
officer during World War I. In the Arab-Israeli war of 1948, following the creation of
the State of Israel, the flag of the Red Cross flew over the building, which had been
damaged by gunfire and bombs: it was turned into a field hospital.

But the most famous people one can
encounter here have little to do with
war. Among them are actor Robert de
Niro, U2 lead singer Bono, and UEFA
president Michel Platini. But the VIPS at
the American Colony are discreet. The
hotel is never shut to indulge the whims
of somebody famous, nor does it offer
rooms to heads of state with security
entourages that would necessitate
blocking off streets. The statesmen tend
to stay in West Jerusalem –the Israeli
part, where official meetings are held–
and are advised by Israeli authorities,
who don’t much approve of people
spending the night in the Palestinian
zone. The American Colony, which has
a valuable photographic archive, is
home to influential political advisors.
Its glamorous garden is the setting for
extra-official events accompanied by a
good dry martini.
In this oasis of calm in a bustling city
there are none of the security arches
common in Western hotels, “because
it is the safest place in Jerusalem,”
says Brugnatelli. It is the only place
serving pork, and the tourists
–principally Americans and Europeans,
including a considerable number of
Spaniards– find the comfort of a
luxury hotel with fabulous rooms at
reasonable prices, just a ten-minute
walk from the Old City.
I Guerra Mundial.

worked a great deal on Bullipedia. To order all the information, we first
had to decode the genome of the gastronomic process. After identifying the large

coral y gris humo.
A maya Arzuaga (Lerma, 1970) has never paid much
attention to awards, but the 2013 National Fashion
Prize has made her very happy. She says she is grateful
and explains that such recognition, rather than
opening doors, “opens fashion shows.”
Her creations have been seen on catwalks in Madrid,
Barcelona, London, Milan, New York, Paris and, last
January, at the Hong Kong Fashion Week. She is one of
the Spanish women designers with the greatest international popularity, in
part for the vanguard style of her creations. Yet she is reluctant to define
style or even herself. “I try to offer something new and different in each
collection, without losing my identity, and I hope that my style is personal
and makes a contribution”, she says.
Arzuaga studied design at the Madrid Polytechnic University, but fashion
has been a part of her life since childhood. She grew up among the fabrics
at her mother’s workshop, and at school was the envy of her girlfriends: she
travelled to fashion fairs in Paris and came back with very special clothes.
Amaya Arzuaga has also lived among wine vats: her father produces the
wine that bears the family name. Florentino Arzuaga instilled in her a
love of wine, and so it’s not surprising that she has created her own wine,
‘Amaya Arzuaga Collection, Ribera del Duero’ –and naturally it’s a ‘designer
wine.’ “These are two very interesting worlds that also go together well,”
she says. For some of her creations, this designer from Burgos has sought
inspiration in the products of the vine.
In 1994 Amaya Arzuaga chose the Paris Prêt-à-Porter Fashion Week
to launch her first collection. She recalls that those first years were
“easy, unconscious and surprising. At the beginning there was so much
excitement, and whatever you achieved was special, but with the passing
years it’s harder to keep developing.” That Paris debut was a complete
success because she achieved her aim: to sell. A year later she made her
first fashion parade and since then she hasn’t stopped. At present she
has two lines of women’s clothes,
Amaya Arzuaga and AA de Amaya
Arzuaga, in addition to a bedroom
furnishing collection -Amaya
Arzuaga Inside- and shoes.
The designer exports 80 per cent of
her production, and her creations
are sold in 37 countries. In Spain
there are 200 sales points.
In her AA de Amaya Arzuaga
collection for spring/summer
2014, the designer has taken
inspiration from butterflies, bats,
and the versatile artist Max Bill. It
mixes materials and stresses
vacuums, overlapping, asymmetry,
volatility and volumes. The
silhouettes are dynamic and the
colours range from black, white and
orange to bougainvillea, coral and
smoky grey.

porter collection, which received great approval from the critics.
Alessandra Facchinetti was born in Bergamo in 1972 and studied art, sculpture
and architecture. As a teenager she was attracted to the world of fashion, and
completed her studies at Milan’s Marangoni Institute of Fashion and Design.
Facchinetti has had considerable experience at prestigious fashion firms. Her first
work was for MiuMiu, which she joined in 1994 as designer and coordinator. In
2000 she signed up with the Gucci Group as design director for the prêt-à-porter
collection. It was there that she met her first great challenge: after working for three
years with Tom Ford, she was chosen to succeed the great designer when he made
his definitive retirement. Some fanatics never forgave her for occupying his position.
After Facchinetti left Gucci, in 2006 she launched Gamme Rouge for Moncler,
and in 2008 began her service at Maison Valentino. And here again she succeeded
another mythic fashion figure, Valentino Garavani, who was saying goodbye after 45
years of being the favourite with Hollywood stars and European royalty.
In 2010 Facchinetti took on her first personal project, with the Pinko brand. The
result was Uniquesse, an exclusive collection for the online market.
Facchinetti is a versatile designer without any special muse or concrete
inspiration. “I never follow the same concept,” she says. “The ideas and
references change on the spur of the moment.” For her Tod’s women’s
collection she has taken inspiration from women who like to travel. Her
strong point is her determination, and she defines her personal style as
“feminine and graphic”. For Facchinetti, luxury fashion means “knowing
how to choose”, and Made in Italy is “an aesthetics achieved through
tradition and craftsmanship.”
Alessandra Facchinetti joined Tod’s after several meetings with
Diego Della Valle in which they established some bonds of
confidence and agreed on their vision for the project. That’s why she
had no hesitation in making a commitment to a brand that she
describes as “a contemporary way of being timeless through careful
quality.” As creative director of the brand, she heads a team of 20 people
in Milan, although she travels continually to the Marche region to supervise
the development of each product.

PUBLIRREPORTAJE
Recruiting Erasmus: talento internacional
Recruiting Erasmus: international talent
Ya se ha convertido en el más
prestigioso portal de empleo
para estudiantes internaciona-
les en Europa. Recruiting Erasmus es
un proyecto innovador de la consultora
PeopleMatters que pone en contacto a
empresas con universitarios españoles
que estudian fuera de nuestras fronte-
ras y con estudiantes extranjeros que
vienen a España.
book, Twitter, YouTube, Linkedin, etc. En
el programa Recruiting Erasmus partici-
pan grandes compañías punteras en sus
respectivos sectores que comparten el
objetivo de incorporar en sus equipos a
jóvenes con talento, buen historial aca-
démico y ganas de iniciar una ambicio-
sa trayectoria profesional.
La identifi cación de estudiantes con
experiencia internacional permite loca-
lizar profesionales cualifi cados, men-
talizados y preparados para un mundo
global interconectado.
tes: AbbVie, Airbus Group, ALDI, BBVA,
Crédito y Caución, everis, Gas Natural
Fenosa, HEINEKEN España, Ikea,
Inditex, Janssen, Lidl, Microsoft, MSD,
Prosegur, Red Eléctrica de España,
Santander y Steelcase.
It has become the most prestigious
site in Europe for the employment
of international students. Recruiting
Erasmus is an innovative project of the
PeopleMatters consulting fi rm that puts
companies in contact with Spanish
university students who are studying
outside Spain and with foreign students
coming to Spain.
It is a unique, innovative programme
that, while it came about through a
private fi rm led by PeopleMatters, has
rapidly fi t into the sector of university
programmes for international mobility.
At present, Recruiting Erasmus enjoys
both public and private support,
from University and Business. It is a
pioneering initiative that doesn’t exist
in the rest of Europe, and it may very
well end up reaching other countries in
coming years.
During the six years Recruiting
Erasmus has been running, leading
companies in different sectors have
participated as members, thus taking
advantage of the data base on international
students and inviting them to take part
in the fi rms’ selection processes. The
communications campaign uses different
specialised media as well as websites
and social networks: Facebook, Twitter,
YouTube, LinkedIn, etc. Taking part in the
Recruiting Erasmus programme are large
companies that are the leaders in their
fi elds. They share the aim of recruiting
youngsters with talent, a good academic
record, and a willingness to begin an
ambitious professional career.
By identifying students with
international experience, it is possible to
fi nd young professionals who are well
qualifi ed and have the right mind set to
work in a world that is globally connected.
These young people feel comfortable when
working with people of other cultures, are
less resistant to changing their place of
residence, and tend to want to repeat the
experience. As a result, many will choose
a job that entails moving to another
country, something that is important if
we take into account that in the current
economic crisis, many fi rms are opting
for internationalisation to compensate for
declining business in Spain.
By means of the programme’s website
(recruitingerasmus.com), young people
who have worked or studied overseas
can contact the participating companies:
AbbVie, Airbus Group, ALDI, BBVA,

ANNIVERSARY OF LEICA
ANIVERSARIODE LEICA

of an attack. He pursued an idea that he shared with his closest circle: “Small
negative, big picture”. The fruit of his obsession in 1914 was the Ur-Leica, or
‘Liliput’ as Barnack himself called it, the first 35 mm camera of a brand that is
now a hundred years old. Its portability soon made it the choice of reporters,
photographers and war correspondents. The new Leica also got rid of heavy
glass plates and made way for light rolls of 35 mm film as used in the cinema.
WITNESS TO THE 20TH CENTURY
Leica cameras have witnessed the principal events of recent history owing
to their close relationship with photojournalism. After the parenthesis of the
First World War, the Ur-Leica started to be marketed in 1925 at the Leipzig
Fair in Germany. 1,000 cameras were sold that year, as many as 90,000 Leicas
were manufactured seven years later, and the figure rose to a million in 1961,
reflecting the meteoric rise of the German firm. By the second half of the 20th
century, a Leica was an object of desire not only because of its portability

ediciones especiales. La primera es la cá-

and image quality but also because great photographers were and are
faithful to the brand. Among them were unconditional supporters like Cartier-
Bresson, whose Leica allowed him to capture “the decisive moment”, and Robert
Capa, who documented the Normandy landings in the Second World War, the
liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge and the Spanish Civil War with a Leica
III that accompanied him to his death in the war of Indo-China.
More recently, other illustrious photographers whose Leicas have left pieces
of history and its protagonists on our retinas include Alberto Korda, who
photographed Ernesto “Che” Guevara; Nick Ut, who won the Pulitzer Prize with
his photo of Kim Phúc, the Vietnamese girl running naked with burns from the
effects of an explosion; Thomas Hoepker, who snapped the young Muhammad
Ali; and Sebastiao Salgado, who has been half-way around the world with his
Leicas M rangefinder and R6.2 SLR. With Leica, photography in general and
photojournalism in particular have taken a giant leap.
A CENTENARY TO REMEMBER
Now, after a hundred years and a varied range of cameras and lenses, Leica is
commemorating its centenary with the release of two special editions. The first
is the Leica S Edition 100 camera, which includes the Leica Summarit-S 70 mm
f/2.5 and Leica Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 lenses and a compact aluminium trolley
for protection while travelling and in extreme situations. The second is the Leica
D-Lux 6, a compact in a two-colour finish with a shiny black body and an elegant
black leather case. 5,000 units of this model will be made. A common
characteristic of both cameras is the centenary logo engraved on the body and
lenses. Moreover, the brand’s centenary campaign “will be accompanied by a
series of cultural projects, photography exhibitions and competitions, book
launches, and a special issue of the magazine LFI under the title 100 Years

CURIOUS FACTS
The Spanish horse is one of the world’s few pure breeds of horse. All
foals have to undergo a DNA paternity test before being classed as Pure
Spanish Horses. There is a blood bank with more than 200,000 samples
where their DNA is compared with that of their parents in a molecular
genetics laboratory located in Seville, Spain. This is where the ANCCE, the
international breeder’s association, has its headquarters.
Spanish horses have a passport like ours to be able to travel all over the
world, and they carry a microchip measuring less than 2 cm in their neck to
aid identification in case the passport is lost.
The life expectancy of a horse is about 23 years, and the average
height of a Spanish horse (measured from the ground to the
beginning of the neck) is 160 cm. There are currently about 215,000
Pure Spanish Horses (or PREs) distributed around 65 countries, with
15,000 new births each year.
The predominant coat colours of Spanish horses are grey, bay and black.
After Spain, the country with most PREs is the USA, and the one where most
foals are born is Mexico.

75
Philip II put the horse population of his kingdom in order, laying the definitive
foundations for the Purebred Spanish Horse to reach its apogee in the coming years.
He did this by creating the Royal Stables in Córdoba, where he grouped the best
stallions and mares from the provinces bordering the River Guadalquivir, the most
prolific breeding centres at that time.
The Spanish horse thus became the most highly coveted gift of the Spanish crown
at the moment of its greatest cultural and political splendour. The main courts of
Europe had Spanish horses sent from Spain, and used them to improve or create
their own breeds such as the Lipizzano, the warmbloods of Central Europe, and
practically all those in America.
This horse became an excellent ambassador for Spain all over what was then
the known world. And it continues to fulfil its ambassadorial role today as an
autochthonous Spanish breed admired the world over, and bred in more than
65 countries.
The Spanish horse is attractive and docile, with a special natural elegance and
outstanding intelligence. For those not versed in equestrian matters, it might be said
to be like a Rolls Royce among horses, or like any mother’s ideal son-in-law.
Its main characteristics are its thick and silky mane and tail, its expressiveness, its
elegant movements, its harmonious
forms and its noble character.
It is the ideal horse for those learning to
ride owing to its nobility and its gentle
movements, and it establishes a special
connection with its rider. The Spanish
horse shows absolute devotion to its
mount, and is always ready to follow his
or her instructions.
When a rider mounts a Spanish horse,
the sensation is one of dealing with a
clever student who makes learning and
mutual dealings easier. Riding across
open country on a Spanish horse is a
feeling everyone should experience to
gain first-hand knowledge of what it
means to be in contact and harmony
with nature.

DIVERSOS USOS
VARIOUS USES
The Spanish horse is a versatile animal that is good for many things, and this too
makes it special and different from other horses:
For saddling: To enjoy horsemanship and keep fit with a ride in the countryside
or at a riding club. In Spain it is very common to see people on horseback at fairs,
pilgrimages and local fiestas. The Spanish horse is also frequently harnessed to
carriages for the fun of driving family and friends in the open countryside, or at
the festivals just mentioned.
For sport: To compete in competitions like dressage, driving, haute école or doma
vaquera (working riding), among other disciplines. Spanish horses habitually
take part in the Olympic Games and world championships, with major successes
such as the silver medal in dressage at the Athens Olympics.

Lessons from the past
A master reporter and one of the fathers of the ‘New Journalism’
along with Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson, Gay Talese is still
in top form at the age of 82. In June he will publish the Spanish
version of Unto the Sons, which first appeared in 1992. This
autobiographical account follows several generations of his own
family, the Taleses, who emigrated from Italy to the United States
at the end of the 19th century.
