PASSIONATE LIVING

“You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” - Jack London

Last night my friend Anna in Switzerland was ranting about how nothing in Geneva’s fashion scene was inspiring anything but her frustrating writer’s block, leaving her with an outdated blog. My answer? Not exactly a pick-me-up: “fortunately I don’t feel your pain…bloggers and fashionistas in the UAE NEVER face THAT.” This month, like every month, this statement proves true. With so many flavors hitting the UAE’s fashion scene, we couldn’t wish for a better setting In Blogville (page 43).

Nothing moves faster to evolve and revamp your image than fashion. Hermes found inspiration this time around fusing its classy style with the sporty spirit in its sports collections (page 57). Passion on the runway: On Trend Bold And Desirable, Sporty and Vivacious (page 19) fashion love guides you to reimagine and compliment your silhouette in sassy long dresses. Hollywood’s red carpet panache comes to Eveningz this month with the Oscar’s 2013 glamor best dressed list (page 37) and with the New Ms. Gemfields, Mila Kunis (page 107).

While some may find their passion in fabrics and accessories, others find it in edible gold (page 81), caviar (page 83) or pampering spa treatments (page 79). Whatever it may be that moves your world, Eveningz is there to breathe life and fire into your passion.

Passionate Eveningz. Passionate You.

On Trend Bold and desirable . The roaring twenties have begun!

Syrian designer Rami Al Ali is in for his third Paris Couture Presentation which celebrated his seasonal return with a bold collection of designs inspired by The Great Gatsby. His direction was very obvious “less is more”. Arabian Dusks just got an unabridged moister.

His collection is bold, unflinching and glamorous. Gone are the chains of obligations and the new era of pristine freedom is hitting the runway. Showcasing the strength and power of women, the female silhouette has become illustrious and eminent. His new collection is the ultimate depiction of the pivotal times and a painted picture of the Gatsby theme.

Fashion | Eveningz | 20

Page 24: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

The night was mesmerizing with a blend of distinguished hues and juvenile expressions. The celebration continues by revealing the collection of splendid shades such as cool grey, beige, and sizzling red bestowing the vintage allure to the elegant designs.

21 | Eveningz | Fashion

Page 25: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

The most salacious collection was glamorized when the black floor-length number appeared with a touch of backless, geometrically-patterned haut and translucent accordion skirt. The Gatsby refrain was further highlighted with vacillation peripheries, sinking V-necks and the emblem twenties’ drib waist was exquisitely showcased in a scalloped Ombré effect dress and a midnight blue number embellished by beadwork.

Fashion | Eveningz | 22

Page 26: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Flowing sleeves, palazzo pants and disco ball patterned dresses were the perfect portrayal of retro seventies. The venemenously red dress with a hooded cape was the perfect luxury touch of the night. Sleek contours bid a simple yet impacting approach as the less-is-more rule smears, with touches of vivacity and flicker, keeping the line playful.

Sources tell us:

Rami Al Ali’s twenty-four piece collection impeccably captures the essence of the period whilst bringing the story to life in a twenty-first century world.

The austere leaning wardrobe muses for both men and women.

Madinat Arena was blooming with sleeker, more functional and glamorous inspirations for your wardrobe. More than 3000 fashion fanatics became part of the changing face of fashion. The unique and exclusive style of the

runway was a delight to the eyes. Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan, also made an appearance in support of the brand Splash, which are the sole distributors of Being Human in the Region.

The curiosity was on the peak to know the reason behind the unique concept of the show; we couldn’t resist ourselves to ask Raza Beig about it. Speaking about the exceptional strategy and notion of the show, Raza Beig, CEO, Splash & ICONIC said:

“At Splash we have always strived to work on unique concepts and sets which tie-in the season’s trends presenting a collection

of high street must haves from the brand. Our SS’13 fashion show is an ode to the world of sports and the fashion it brings along.”

“With an aim to maximize the reach of our shows and celebrate fashion on a larger scale, we live streamed our 3 shows on all our social media platforms along with leading online platforms across the Region, where we hope that half a million or more fans and consumers watched the show. This will be more than twice the number of viewers from last time and we are thankful and extremely proud of our loyal clientele,” Raza added further.

Page 30: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

A night full of the spirit of fashion and glamor welcomed the bevy of 45 models to walk down the ramp sporting themes like 60s,

Gatsby, Warrior, New Mod, Preppy resort to dapper Schoolboy, which are just some of the trends that lead the style pack this season. Drawing inspiration from team sports such as baseball and tennis, to individual sports such as horse riding & track, to rough sports like wrestling & fencing, the Splash runway was opened with a singer belting out a rendition of the popular track, ‘We are the Champions’. In between the 20 minute show, cheer leaders flown in especially from Germany, regaled the audiences with a 25 second performances ensuring that the sports themed show had its right mix of fashion, style and entertainment.

Speaking about the collection the women’s collection had facsimiles and patterns ruling the looks with engineered, tribal, reptile

and kaleidoscope prints. Easy fabrics like georgettes, chiffons and soft knits in shades of fuchsia, citrus and Ombré were a key favorite on the runway reflecting poised feminity where you can incorporate a sporty feel by the way of outerwear. For a mermaid look gone urban sports, the Splash runway presented looks that mixed sparkling sequins or metallic with luxe jersey or figure hugging wetsuit-like silhouettes. Floral prints, a sugary display of pastels were key trends reflecting a very 60s mood.

Fashion | Eveningz | 30

Page 34: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

For men, the collection was the obvious portrayal of a sporty and athletic sense. The feel into the season was the picture

of outerwear where hooded coats in parachute silks or jersey, varsity jackets, and parkas are all strong options. Explosively optimistic for this season, deep tangerine, lemon yellow, Caribbean blue and neon are combined with pastels and men sported slim blazers paired with easy-fit shorts and pants. Representing the roaring 20s of America, ‘The Great Gatsby’ trend finds its inspiration from an era which had a distinctive cultural edge featuring pastel shades where tailored play is important. Colors such as cornflower blue and pine green provide a fresh feel to the looks while a refined laundered look of washed earthy neutrals, mixed with deep red and olives with a hint of camouflage and geometric prints emerge as strong contenders to the season.

Cynthia Pennikian – a young and innovative handbag designer bringing the unique sense of fashion right there to hang on your sleeves. A whole

new generation of personalized handbags is a blend of luxury leather, pioneering design and personalized touch. Cynthia Pennikian was born in Lebanon and studies Advertising and Marketing before entering into the Fashion Design field. From her early years she revealed her passion for styling and developed her own unique sense of fashion as she grew up. Cynthia’s dream was to open the doors of the fashion world for her real passion: designing clothing & accessories and she made her way! CeeCode became Cynthia’s first endeavor into the world of fashion through a sole & distinct line of handbags.

CeeCode is not only a brand; it’s actually a persona of your inner self. It describes itself as every woman’s personality code. It gives you the variety of vigorous designs with an echo of groovy fun, love for life and sophistication. There is something very unique about Cynthia Pennikian; she knows exactly what CeeCode will suit your personality.

As we were hunting for our lust haves of the season we got the chance to plunge into Cynthia’s gaudy and lurid world. We were staggered to sit with her in her real world (her office) which was groovy and chic.

Eveningz: CeeCode - What is the secret behind it?

Cynthia: Street Fashion with funkiness while still staying on trend, I do this by using different types of material, such as python colored and neon leather (EdgeCode).

Eveningz: How did you come up with this idea?

Cynthia: Being a handbag lover since I was a child, I was always trying to find a handbag that represented my own style and quirkiness. This was the idea behind the CeePlates and PlateCodes, which can be customized.

Eveningz: We see a lot of colors in your collection, what is the story behind them?

Cynthia: In all my collections, color plays a key part of the look and feel. If the bag is a more glamorous bag then colors will be more muted and basic. If the bag screams statement piece, I use neon colors and a mixture of different materials such as rubber and python leather.

Eveningz: Which is your favorite CeeCode?

Cynthia: I love all my designs, but the bag that I use every day is the CeeCode SashaCode in red, it’s a perfect fit for everything that I need to carry during the day!

Eveningz: One statement for CeeCode?

Cynthia: What hides in your CeeCode bag?

The prime elite night of Hollywood was totally glamorous. The leading ladies of Hollywood brought the fabulous fans and eager paparazzi to the glitzy Red carpet of Oscars 2013. Gorgeous actresses fizzling in sequins graced this year’s Oscars red carpet. Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Catherine Zeta Jones wowed in metallic shades. The ruling color palette at the hot red carpet was soft nude, snowy white, or glaring black. There were a few standouts who risked wearing bold color, and we must say they succeeded like Kerry Washington and Jennifer Aniston who dazzled the red carpet. Further trends and styles on our best-dressed list from the night included soft and subtle

colors, strapless gowns and lots of spangled diamonds.

Jennifer Lawrence:

Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence is our hot favorite and one of the super garbed stars on Oscar night. The 22-year-old actress focused hoary Hollywood charisma in a well-thought-out Dior Haute Couture outfit with her hair hauled back. The “Silver Linings Playbook” actress was all glazed with Chopard jewels which lounged down her back.

Fashion | Eveningz | 38

Page 42: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Charlize Theron:

Charlize Theron is another red carpet winner in a snowy white peplum Dior Haute Couture gown. She walked with style, elegance and an adorable smile. She was alone amongst the women with her simple short hair - and the actress has no regrets about it.

She told Ryan Seacrest: ‘It’s the most freeing thing, I highly recommend it. I think every woman should do it.” Her unique sense of fashion is always commendable and it was clear that losing her hair hasn’t affected the lady’s confidence in the least.

39 | Eveningz | Fashion

Page 43: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Anne Hathway:

Asombroso! Sexy back revealed with a cute smile. Anne Hathaway made a last minute apparel switch and instead of wearing Valentino, slipped into this Prada gown. Wearing Prada with Tiffany & Co jewelry – we must say she made the right choice!

She said of the dress:“I didn’t know what I was wearing until about three hours ago. This was the one that spoke to me in the end.” The sleek pink lady truly mesmerized us.

Fashion | Eveningz | 40

Page 44: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Kristen Stewart:

Who would forget talking about the venomous lady on the red carpet! K. Stew always amazes us wearing strange footwear on the red carpet but this time – jaw dropped – very supportive accessories—her crutches, of course! We never predicted to see her with one solitary heel and a set of orthopedic props at the Oscars of all places. Hmmm!! All we can say is Get Well Soon!!

The actress chose a Reem Acra blush colored gown, which with its flowing tulle enamels a sinuous sequence. She kept her hair and makeup on a low and subtle key, with just a touch of smoky eyes and natural lips along with her long red-brown hair loose and pushed to the side which just added more sensuality to the look.

41 | Eveningz | Fashion

Page 45: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Amanda Seyfried:

Alexander McQueen was the perfect choice for “Les Miserables” leading actress Amanda Seyfried.Always looking amazing, this night was no exception. Amanda astonished everybody in a floor-length robe decked with sparkly and glitzy embellishments with her ravishing looks and her adorable smile. Even her sagacity of makeup was admirable. This look is all about using warm greys on the eyes and creating alar lines at the outer edges for a slinky shape. She left the remaining make up simple and let the hint of gloss on the lips do the talking.

Luxurious Neck Embellishments

Zelia Horsley flares up with fine jewelry pieces to make you look elegant and sensuous.

Zelia Horsley is a London based high fashion jewelry designer. Following her studies at Middlesex University London, Zelia went on to work in the studios of Kirt Holmes and Simon Harrison Ltd. where she created and produced pieces for Vivienne Westwood and Agent Provocateur. Zelia’s taste and sense of fashion is remarkable and valiant. A connubial of opposites with ostensibly chaotic results, flare-ups of surface texture, stagy vagaries in scale result in a bold controlled architectural elegance. The practice

of fashioned and molded acrylic plates hosts new sculptural and spatial prospects of grace and class.

A Sporty Life!

Arceau Chrono Bridon

The iconic Arceau collection encumbers up for a fresh and different expression of equine sports with the new Arceau Chrono Bridon, deduced in five versions. All models feature a new strap, along with the same rounded case design, stirrup-shaped lopsided heaves and sloping Arabic numerals as the original line designed by Henri d’Origny in 1978. The inspiration is riding bridles – a perfect choice for equestrian sports. Crafted from Barenia calfskin with idiosyncratic saddle stitching describes the zeal and passion for sporty life. A power-driven opus augmented with horsey drawls, the Arceau Chrono Bridon is creatively cherished by the inherent elegance of horses.

The shades of black, natural, ebony or indigo blue versions are available. They are the amusing extension of the curving case. At the heart of the Arceau Chrono Bridon beats a self-winding chronograph caliber that captures the time spent in great escapes on horseback. The central seconds-hand sweeps steadily around the dial sometimes clad in orange on sportier versions or else made from steel or blued steel for the more classic models, entirely in harmony with the counter hands.

Hermès empowers sports to prompt its true nature as an art of living.

Clipper Sport

A case offering a frisky merger of provisions and flashing between titanium and steel; a strap available in a range of perky colors; a self-winding movement keeping step with the passing of time to the placid rhythm of twirling waves or footsteps in the sand. Its name is Clipper Sport.

An extension of the Clipper line, this new model features the emblematic bezel inspired by the portholes of the great 19th century sailing ships. Available in three versions, it showcases complex work with materials through a bimetallic case construction featuring the case-back and bezel in steel, and the case-band made of titanium – a material known both for its lightness and for its performance in the world of competitive sailing.

The slim outline of the H for Hermès initials embellishes the rubber strap. Large Arabic numerals stand out on the dial, while a triangular marker in the same color as the center seconds-hand points to the date. Once night has fallen, the dagger-shaped hands and the superluminal-coated hour dots ensure perfect readability. The counter-clockwise rotating bezel also features a luminescent marker at noon, like an invitation to set a southwards course.

S u n k i s s e d E y e sAppropriate Eyewear for the Beach

There are few things better than sitting by the beach, feeling the breeze of the ocean while laying in the sun’s glory. While this may seem like an ideal way to spend the

weekend or a day off, it is extremely important to be careful about the damage that the sun’s rays can cause not just to your skin, but to your eyes. Living in a climate where the sun is very strong, sun damage will occur even if you are just driving to and from work or popping out to the shops or even doing a school run, your skin is still getting sun exposure and over time it will undoubtedly cause aging – even around the eyes. Since there is direct exposure to the sun at the beach, proper eyewear becomes an essential. The following factors must be taken into consideration for finding the appropriate eyewear for the beach:

Polarized LensesPolarized lenses reduce the water glare that comes from the rays of the sun reflecting off of the water. Moreover, they provide additional comfort, when compared to non-polarized sunglasses, in sunny conditions.

UV ProtectionIdeal sunglasses for the beach should block 99-100 percent of UV rays. Sunglasses that block 100 percent UV rays are usually marked with the labels “UV 400” (these glasses block all rays with wavelengths up to 400) or “100 percent UV protection”. Another stamp of approval on sunglasses that provide proper eye protection is “The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation”.

Function and Comfort in MaterialSunglasses are usually manufactured out of polycarbonate (a durable lightweight plastic), CR-39 (a plastic used in prescription-grade lenses), glass (durable but heavier) and metal. Polycarbonate lenses are best suited for individuals who engage in water sports as they are impact resistant. Glass lenses are more expensive and heavier, but are also heat-resistant and maintain their form.

Tint FinishThe right tint color in the right conditions can improve vision and block glare and sunlight; the color of the lens finish determines what kind of light the glasses are capable of blocking. Gray tinted lenses are the appropriate choice for the beach because they reduce UV rays to a safe level while providing all-day protection. Brown and amber tinted glasses work well for individuals engaging in water sports and beach activities.

BEAuTY SIPS

Sip your way to smooth and supple sk in

The U.A.E. welcomes miraculous beauty sips, Pure Gold Collagen - a treatment mode unlike any other traditional anti-ageing product. It perfects the skin’s complexion from the inside out.

Every year, 1.5% of the collagen in the skin is lost due to the natural aging process; your skin loses its sustenance edifice and pliability which creates a ‘sagging’ effect as fine lines creep up! Wrinkles appear. If we do the comparison, younger skin is healthier which contains up to 75% collagen, so as this lessens so does dramatic effect on the skins appearance.

Tony, CEO of Pure Gold Collagen, explained why it is considered to be more of a traditional anti-aging solution. He said:

“Traditional skincare treatments rely on the application of collagen on the surface of the skin. This is not sufficient to counteract the ageing process where it begins – in the deep layers of the skin. The active ingredients in Pure Gold Collagen© reach the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, from the inside where it re-activates the formation of collagen for younger looking skin.”

The secret behind these miraculous sips is its key ingredient – pure collagen. It is a natural skin component and plays a vital role in stabilizing firmness and elasticity. Plus, this new generation supplement also comprehends three other active and dynamic ingredients: borage oil, hyaluronic acid and vitamins which are necessary for the skins hydration and increased elasticity.

Studies show it is your beauty sip!!The miracle is not completed yet - this unique and distinctive composite works wonders to kindle the fibroblasts in the dermis increasing the levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid within the skin. Studies show that augmenting your diet daily with Pure Gold Collagen can result in a 28% increase in the skins hydration levels after just 8 weeks, and a 26% decrease in wrinkles after 12 weeks.

Take a sip - get flawless skin!!

Whether you’re a keen horticulturist or just innately prone, chapped hands is nothing to applaud. To keep your skin flexible and to prevent it from getting those painful cracks

– avoid washing with alcohol-based cleansers or chemical solvents which will parch your natural oils. If you expect your hands to perform for you on demand, then you have to take care of them as well. With many of your daily activities and habits you can easily make them soft and subtle. Hands-free headphones are premeditated not to give your hands a relaxation but to free them so they can do something else while you talk on the phone. After your face, they’re the part of your body people notice most. Here are some hand-care tips to aid you to reimburse your hands for their hard work and keep them looking as young as you do.

A Pair of gloves will do the trickIndoors, make a habit of wearing gloves all the time whenever your hands are exposed to a lot of water or chemicals. Outdoors, the winter season air can swiftly trench the moisture from your hands. Pull on a pair of mittens or gloves when the chill sets in, it is your care and your fashion trend.

Block the sun – you’re worth itYour hands are the tranquil part that’s exposed to the sun, summers or winters hands are victimized the most. Get into the treaty of worthy hand care by putting sunscreen on them

the same way you protect your face. Stash a travel-size tube of sunscreen in your purse for the times you find your hands unexpectedly exposed.

Rub Rub Rub – ExfoliateExfoliation is as essential to your hand care as it is to your face. The outer skin of your hand is very squeaky and doesn’t have much plump underneath. As time passes and you age, the small expanse of fat decreases even more, which is why your veins and bones become more noticeable and your skin starts too. Exfoliating won’t bring the fat back, but it will help your skin look fresh and glowing for longer time periods. Use your facial exfoliant on your thin-skinned hands instead of the scrub you use on your body.

Soft and supple – MoisturizeWashing your hands frequently (which you should do to keep yourself healthy) parched the dampness from your skin. A light, water-based, fast-absorbing lotion is a good choice for daytime use. For night time you might prefer a heavier oil-based cream that can soak in while you sleep, leaving your hands soft and hydrated in the morning

Self-Relaxation – MassageLast but not least you should pamper your hands as they pamper and help you. Treat your hands softly and give them comfort by giving them a self-massage. Start with the fleshy part of your hand near the base of the thumb, and then work each finger from base to tip.

Give your hands a little attention and

EveningZ recently caught up with Lydia Espin, one of Dubai’s best facial therapists, winner of the Dermalogica Middle East Congress award for ‘Best Skin Therapist’ in 2012 and owner of the Essa Beauty salon, for a rendezvous…

1. Firstly, congrats on winning the Dermalogica Middle East Congress award for ‘Best Skin Therapist’. How did you get into being a beauty therapist?

I have always wanted to work within the beauty industry and become a beauty therapist. My sister and I were very girly girls always wanting to dress up and make our hair and make-up look nice. I remember even then that my friends were always asking me to shape their eyebrows or do their make-up etc., which I really enjoyed doing.

When I left school, my parents thought it would be a good idea for me to go to college and study business studies and computers (as they said it would be useful as that is where technology was taking us in the world), so even though I wanted to work within Beauty, I went into business studies following my parents advice. I knew it wasn’t for me and my heart was never into it, so when I qualified in business studies, I had a discussion with my parents and advised them that I was going back to college to study beauty and I would get a part time job in the evenings, they said if it was my dream then they would support my wishes.

I passed all my exams with flying colors and was awarded the best learner in beauty therapy when I qualified. I went to one of the highest standard beauty colleges in the whole of the UK, where the college had won awards itself for their extremely high standards. All my tutors were absolutely brilliant, but one of my teachers in particular was so professional, well educated, elegant, softly spoken. I admired her, she was my inspiration. Till date, I often think about her and how she helped me to become the therapist I am today. My words of advice would be to never lose sight of your goals, always stick to your high standards, and never let anyone take that away from you or tell you otherwise.

2. What led you to establish Essa beauty?

I absolutely love my job and making my clients feel special. Its more than just a job to me, it’s my life and I will always keep trying to be the best that I can be. I have over ten years’ experience in the beauty industry working in spas and salons within the UK and UAE. Even though I have progressed to management level, I have always been hands on and have never left the treatment room as this is my main passion. In my career as a beautician, owning my own business was the ultimate goal. Before opening Essa beauty, I had several other opportunities to open a business and start up my own beauty salon with silent business partners; however, I wasn’t quite ready for that step mentally. Then two years ago it was like the light switched on for me and I was ready; I was hungry to develop, and mentally & physically ready to start my own business. So, I sat down, brainstormed and put a business plan together. I named Essa Beauty after my parents because I wanted the name to mean something special to me.

3. What sets Essa beauty facials apart from other facial salons in Dubai?

I listen to my clients and before every facial; each and every client gets a thorough and comprehensive face mapping consultation to reveal their every skin concern - may it be dehydration, sensitivity, aging, or pigmentation. I then determine the exact facial that will best suit their skin requirements. I honestly want my client to feel like they can completely relax. In the stressful and fast paced life that we lead, I want my clients to have a sanctuary in my treatment room. I can guarantee that as soon as the client steps into the treatment room, they will have one of the best facial experiences in Dubai. A lot of my clients have had experiences of different facials across the world and it’s an amazing feeling when a client says to me that it was the best facial they have ever had. What I have always wanted to offer is a total one to one personal service for my clients so they totally trust me and my expertise - I think this is quite rare. I feel that attention to detail is so important when giving

a client a facial, making the client feel comfortable, relaxed and in safe hands. Making sure they know why we are using a particular product and the benefits it will have to their skin so explaining things to them and answering their questions. Every movement I make on the skin is thought about and to make them relax their mind and senses. I feel that what makes me different from other therapists is that I’m not just a beauty therapist or a spa therapist, I understand the difference between the two and I’m able to combine both. I am able to educate my clients in why we are using certain products and what facial is best for them to get the desired results, but also give them a holistic experience that a specialized Thai or Balinese therapist would give. I feel I am a very spiritual person and want to be in tune with my clients so they feel like they are going on a journey within my treatment room. That they can have some respite from daily life and really relax and enjoy their facial experience and trust that the facial I am performing will make their skin feel amazing.

4. What are your must have skincare products?

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant Dermalogica Skinperfect primer SPF30 Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Cream Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath – (Body) Mac Studio Fix Foundation SPF15 (Makeup)

5. What are five skincare tips that everyone should follow for achieving/maintaining healthy skin, given the harsh UAE climate?

Always wear an SPF, even if you are not sunbathing. This is extremely important, I can’t stress this enough. Cleanse your skin twice in the evenings not just once. Wash your face once, then wash again immediately after. Wear a serum under your moisturizer at night this extra hydration will help when using the AC. Exfoliate your skin at least once a week Always include your neck when cleansing and moisturizing your face.

Torch 300+Calories with HIIT

Melt Body Fat In 20 Minutes

With beach season making us shake in our post-winter love handles, we accept a rude reality: the beautiful toned lines our bodies showed off a few months ago are now covered with our unwelcome friend, fat. If you miss strutting your fit body down JBR with Adriana Lima’s confidence, we have just the workout to blast fat and get some sexy lines showing again, but don’t forget that abs are made in the kitchen.

Abs Are Made In The Kitchen

For anyone out there hoping to get shredded and also get away with eating candy bars and pizza? I’ve got some sad news for you…it’s not going to happen. The truth is abs are primarily made in the kitchen. Limit carbohydrate and sugar intake, try to cut back on saturated fats as much as possible and know your calorie limit. Add the following workout to the equation and you can say hello to shameless sunbathing again.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

In an interview with SELF Magazine, celebrity fitness trainer Jillian Michaels was asked what type of cardio she feels is best for high calorie burn, her reply was HIIT. “High-intensity interval training is a top torcher, whether your cardio of choice is running, biking or something else. Intervals (alternating short bursts of intense activity with short slower periods of recovery) allow your body to zap more calories during a session. HIIT also cranks up your post-workout sizzle, burning as many as 120 calories after you throw in the towel.” Jillian Michaels

How often should you perform HIIT workouts? Because our muscles need a break in order to relax and recover from intense workouts in particular, try doing this workout every other day. In between, going for light jogs or walks is also an option to keep your metabolism going.

Cure Your Insomnia The Natural Way

75 | Eveningz | Health & Beauty

Page 79: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

You know the story: It’s 5:30 A.M., and the very first dawn traces have arisen from the nighttime sky. You’ve been tossing and turning, wide-awake since

1:00 A.M. and are starting to feel desperate. How will you be able to perform tomorrow (actually, make that today)? How on earth will you manage your important presentation? How will you live through yet another day following a sleepless night? Though the commonality of suffering from occasional nights without sleep may be slightly higher at times, insomnia on the other hand is the lack of sleep on a regular basis.

Before you start taking any natural alternatives for your sleeping issues, check with your doctor. Chronic insomnia can also be an indicator of other conditions, such as heart disease, depression, lung disease, sleep apnea, diabetes or hot flashes, so it’s imperative that you visit your doctor when sleeping becomes an issue.

Adults require an average of seven to nine hours of sleep per night, however insomnia may now allow you to get the sleep you need. Dubai has prided itself in being a ‘city that never sleeps’; now it’s paying the price for it as an insomnia wave affects the majority of its residents. According to Failsal Masu from Gulf News “A survey showed that 68 per cent of UAE residents do not notch up enough hours of slumber. Experts reckon the statistics could be much higher for Dubai, given its frenetic pace of life.”

1) 5-HTPExperts consider that a tryptophan deficiency may be the cause for sleep problems from tryptophan, 5-HTP helps the body make serotonin. Low serotonin

levels are a known factor when it comes to sleepless nights. Taking a supplement of 5-HTP may be beneficial if you are suffering from low tryptophan levels. Usually this is the case for people who are suffering from depression or mood swings. 100 mg of the supplement is plenty to get the job done.

2) ValerianValerian (Valeriana officinalis) is an herb which for has been used for centuries as an insomnia remedy. Today, it is an over-the-counter insomnia remedy in several European countries. The down side is it takes between two to three weeks to work (yes, you will need patience and persistence). Valerian should not be used for more than 90 consecutive days at one time. Although one may find it in the form of tea and liquid extracts, most people don’t enjoy its smell and favor taking the capsule form.

3) MelatoninMelatonin is a well-liked therapy to aid when the sleep/wake cycle has been agitated, such as in shift workers or people who suffer from jet lag. Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally found in the body. In the brain, the Pineal gland makes serotonin which is then transformed into melatonin at night when light exposure declines. It should not be used by individuals with depression, autoimmune diseases, schizophrenia, and other serious illnesses. Pregnant and nursing women should also refrain from its use.

4) KavaKava is an anti-anxiety herb which has proved to be of help with anxiety-related insomnia. Kava can be taken as a drink, it also comes in soft-gel, capsule and tablet form.

5) Relaxation TechniquesTo increase sleep time, relaxation techniques are still one of the most efficient ways to get the job done. These typically require a minimum of 20 minutes before calling it a day. There are many different techniques: including visualization, relaxation response, mindfulness, and yoga.

Natural Insomnia RemediesHere are the top 5 natural remedies that are used to treat insomnia.

Insomnia may turn out to boast a noteworthy effect on your health. Individuals who suffer from insomnia are

Four times more prone of being diagnosed with depression. More prone to suffer from serious illnesses, including heart disease. More prone to being involved in accidents at home, on the job, or while driving. More prone to increase absences at work and achieve less on the job than well-rested workmates.

Insomnia also happens to be one of the least-understood disorders in terms of sleep. However, sleep specialists have put together several ‘tried-and-true ways’ to alleviate the disorder. The results of this work appear in the remedies listed below. Give them a try, and figure out what works best for you. If none of the below help, refer to your doctor for a sleep clinic recommendation or a specialist near you.

d The golden phoenix cupcake sold at Bloomsbury in Dubai Mall is made of 23 carat edible gold sheets.

Just when you think Dubai cannot possibly get any more over the top and extravagant, it manages to surprise you – this time with a cupcake made out of 23 carat edible gold sheets. The Golden Phoenix

cupcake takes Dubai’s title of being the City of Gold to a whole new level. Sold at Bloomsbury’s in The Dubai Mall, The Golden Phoenix cupcake, is the world’s most expensive edible cupcake. It is priced at a whopping Dhs 3,700 ($1,010) and is presented on a 24 carat gold Empire Morning Cake Stand with a Cloch by Villari.

Mr. Vinay Lall, General Manager of Bloomsbury said: “We are really excited to have unveiled the most expensive “edible” cupcake in the world, “The Golden Phoenix”. We have seen people attempt the most expensive cupcakes before, however those cupcakes are not edible as they are incrusted with diamonds and other components. That is why we decided that we would take the realistic approach and present the most expensive ‘edible’ cupcake in the world using the real meaning of the words “Let them eat Cake”.”

In addition to the 23 carat edible gold sheets, the recipe of the cupcake consists of four other expensive ingredients: Doves organic flour and Rachel’s organic butter from the United Kingdom, Premium Amedei Porcelena cocoa from Italy and Gold Ugandan vanilla beans. Ms Shafeena Yusuff

Ali, CEO of Bloomsbury’s and the cake’s creator, spent weeks to create the perfect recipe for the cupcake. Ali said: “Our aim is to redefine the cupcakes in the Gulf, why can’t a cupcake taste as good as it looks and look as good as it tastes”.

The motive behind selling the Golden Phoenix cupcake is not just lavish indulgence, as 50 percent of the profit earned from the each cupcake sold will be donated to the World Food Program (WFP). Profit from a single cupcake can feed approximately 1, 850 children said Ashraf Hamouda of the WFP. He described Bloomsbury’s charitable gesture as “formidable generosity”. “This unique partnership is evidence that behind the biggest talents and business ideas, you often find the bigger hearts,” he added. “As I would put it, a golden heart behind every Golden Phoenix.”

Vinay Lall, said “We all got together and were thinking of maybe auctioning a cupcake and giving something back,” he said. “Then we decided to create the best cupcake in the world and donate the proceeds.”

Shafeena Yusuff Ali added, “We took the decision of partnering with WFP after researching and seeing their hard efforts and direct connections with humanitarian causes.”

The Caviar Files.

Page 87: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Caviar may be a delectable source of indulgence you turn to compliment your glass of bubbly but there are lessons to be learned about your favorite luxury menu item.

LESSON I

Not All Caviar Types Are Created EqualCaviar (from the Persian word Khaviar which means “bearing eggs”) is the salted eggs of the sturgeon fish. Caviar typically comes from three types of sturgeon species – beluga, sevruga and osetra. Beluga, the largest eggs, comes from the species Huso huso. Beluga has a rich, creamy flavor and delicate texture. Its rarity, however, is what makes it the most esteemed of all caviars.

Sevruga caviar is obtained from Acipenser stellatus. Sevruga is light gray in color and has a creamy texture and strong flavor.Osetra, the rare golden caviar, comes from Acipenser guldenstaedti. Although the golden caviar is highly prized, the eggs of this species are often more brownish in color. The caviar has a distinctive nutty flavor. Most caviar production is centered in the Caspian Sea, with the two main producers being Russia and Iran (along with the countries of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan). Sturgeon, however, is not confined to this area. There are at least 50 species in the northern hemisphere and may also be found in North America, China, and France. Believe it or not, airlines purchase about

fifty percent of the world’s caviar to serve to their first-class passengers.

LESSON II

The suspense behind the expense: Caviar in Dubai can range anywhere from Dhs340 to Dhs50,000 (yes, Dhs 50,000). While the perception of caviar may be that it is simply ‘fish eggs’, true caviar is made from sturgeon, a fish found in extremely short supply. The scarcity of the wild caviar is what increases its cost. Even though suppliers have started farming their sturgeon to reduce cost, it is still a pricey process.

‘The results can be variable,’ says Olivier Leguyader, the operations manager of Caviar House and Prunier in Dubai – one of the finest places in Dubai to enjoy Caviar. ‘You are trying to recreate the exact atmosphere of wild caviar, which of course you cannot, but we can come pretty close.’

The cost of Caviar is also elevated because of its preservation and safekeeping. ‘Caviar is a very fresh and sensitive item,’ says Leguyader. ‘It has a maximum shelf life of nine months, and it has to be kept between zero and two degrees. Prunier caviar is extremely fresh. Their Paris caviar selection is caught, matured, processed and shipped within 48 hours to the Caviar House in Dubai that incurs extra costs because it airfreights its products to avoid having to freeze them.

For me, true luxury can be caviar or a day with no meetings, no appointments and no schedule.-Michael Kors

85 | Eveningz | Connoisseurs

Page 89: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Enjoying Caviar: According to Leguyader, the best way to enjoy caviar is to “put a spoonful on the back of your hand between the thumb and forefinger. Then you roll it on your tongue like a French kiss. That part of your hand has no smell. After you eat the caviar, smell your hand. It should smell like nothing. If it smells fishy, it isn’t good caviar.”

Caviar for less:There are souks in Deira that sell tins of caviar at a price that is considerably marked down. Even though you may be tempted to pick up those caviar tins, don’t! ‘It is really scary that it calls itself caviar,’ says Leguyader. ‘You don’t know where it has been packed or who packed it. There is no serial number on it, no date, no control.’

LESSON III

Health Benefits of Caviar:

Caviar is a rich source of vitamin A, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids As caviar contains acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter believed to play a key role in memory retention) which lines the stomach and increases the body’s tolerance to alcohol, it is touted as a hangover remedy. Caviar is considered to be an aphrodisiac because it contains arginine – a vascular dilator. Caviar should be a rare treat for those watching their cholesterol and salt intake.

Black Ivory Coffee - how the world’s most expensive coffee is manufactured

Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas introduced Black Ivory Coffee in 2012 at its four resorts in the Maldives, joining the group’s Anantara Golden Triangle resort in Thailand as the first hotels in the world to offer one of the most unique coffee experiences on the planet.

Black Ivory Coffee is created from a process whereby coffee beans are digested and naturally refined by Thai elephants. Research indicates that during digestion, the enzymes of the elephant break down coffee protein. Since protein is one of the main factors responsible for bitterness in coffee, less protein means almost no bitterness.

At a retail price of approximately US$1,100 per kilogram, this coffee is also one of the most expensive and exclusive in the world. Currently 50 kilograms are available for sale.

The process begins with selecting the best Thai Arabica beans that have been picked from an altitude of 1,500 meters. The beans are digested and then deposited by the elephants and the individual beans are handpicked by mahouts (elephant trainer) and their wives and sundried. Do elephants eat coffee beans naturally? Yes. In times of drought, Asian elephants are attracted to coffee plantations as many of them are irrigated and the elephants are drawn to the various fruits (coffee and others).

Approximately 10,000 beans are picked to produce one kilogram of roasted coffee; 33 kilograms of coffee cherries are required to produce one kilograms of Black Ivory Coffee.

Refinement of the coffee takes place at Anantara’s own foundation the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) in Thailand. The foundation, set in the grounds of Anantara Golden Triangle has, to date, rescued 30 street elephants along with their mahouts and families. Eight percent of all coffee sales will be donated to GTAEF to help fund a specialist elephant veterinarian to provide free care to the elephants and additional funds will also be used to purchase medicine as well as to build a new laboratory.

In order to demonstrate freshness and to enhance diners’ senses, the coffee is ground by hand at the table and brewed using technology developed in 1840 in Austria. This balancing syphon is not only a beautiful machine, but also widely recognized as the best way to brew coffee. The consistent 93° Celsius temperature and contact time between water and bean result in a very clean and flavorful taste. The four minute brewing process is visually enticing and leaves a lasting impression.

“We are delighted to be amongst the first hotels in the world to offer this one-of-a-kind coffee experience that also has a positive impact in the lives of Thai elephants,” explained Dillip Rajakarier, CEO Minor Hotel Group with includes Anantara. “It perfectly and flavorfully fits the philosophy of Anantara Resorts to afford our story collecting travelers unique experiences in a destination that appeases more than just aesthetic senses.”

Marwan Parham, popularly known as ‘DJ Bliss’, has taken the music scene in Dubai by storm.

A winner of the TimeOut Nightlife Awards in 2011 for ‘Best Local DJ’ and winner in 2012 for ‘Best Urban Night’ for his 411 Saturdays, Marwan has also been named in the ‘Ahlan HOT 100 four years running 2009/2010/2011/2012. Being voted ‘Bachelor of the Year’ by VIVA 2008 and 2009 and Cosmopolitan Middle East in 2011, Marwan has established himself as the UAE’s leading personality.

Marwan recently celebrated 10 years as a DJ and is in his third year of being part of the Dubai One family with his new and third consecutive show ‘That’s Entertainment’. Marwan has warmed up for celebrities like Beyonce, Prince, Nelly Furtado, Taio Cruz, Tinchy Stryder, Jamiroquai, Kings of Leon, Wyclef Jean and Aersosmith. He has turned into the region’s most wanted MC and DJ for awards, charity events, corporate events, nightclubs, concerts and auctions.

Marwan released his first international single ‘Let it Go’ in collaboration with Kardinal Offishall in 2012 and a second single ‘Mid Life Crises’ in collaboration with Prince Q and Wyclef Jean is ready for release. EveningZ caught up with the stylish DJ for a tête-à-tête…

Q1. Tell us about your early beginnings - how did you find your footing in the music and then the entertainment industry?

I started out playing the guitar and drums in band back in my high school and university days. I always had an interest in music and started running my high school radio station which led to me DJing at house parties. Professional DJing at clubs followed by radio and then TV was a natural progression.

Q2. You are known to be a workaholic, what keeps you motivated? Further, amidst all of your different projects – a radio show, a TV show, managing BLISS INC., emceeing, producing music and more - how do you manage to find time to be creative?

I love what I do and that helps a lot. My biggest problem is that I can’t switch off, my brain is always going crazy with ideas and things I need to do. Even if I’m on set for my TV show on Dubai One ‘That’s Entertainment’, I’ll be thinking of my playlist for the club later that night.

Entertainment | Eveningz | 96

Page 100: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Q3. After ‘Let it go’ released, did you ever feel like you had to defend yourself? How do you deal with haters? No, not really, you usually defend yourself when you feel you have done something wrong and I don’t think I did. I tried something new and learnt A LOT from it. It’s these experiences that you learn from. As far as haters are concerned, they play an important role in your career. A lot of my industry friends tell me the more the haters you have, the better. It means you are doing something right. If you do nothing, haters can’t hate but then you’ve also done NOTHING.

Q4. How does it feel to have collaborated with Wyclef Jean on ‘Mid life Crisis’? It’s been an absolute honor for me and Prince Q to produce ‘Mid Life Crisis’ and four other records with Wyclef. We spent some time at our hotel room in Abu Dhabi during F1 recording that track followed by a trip to New York where I went to record the remaining tracks. There’s lot more coming so stay tuned! Q5. What advice would you give to upcoming DJs/ music talent in the UAE?Don’t give up! Don’t let people bring you down. Watch and learn from everyone but listen to the voice inside of you. Also, music is an art not a few thousand MP3’s on your laptop. You have to have passion and devotion.

Q6. What can we expect from DJ BLISS in 2013? I have more singles coming out to follow up from my first single ‘Let It Go’ featuring Kardinal Offishall. My producer and I are putting out an album called “QB7 Made in Dubai” with features a host of local and international artists. And, of course, the Wyclef track we worked on will be rolling out this year.

The New Ms. Gemfields- Milla Kunis

Gemfields is the world’s leading colored gemstone manufacturer. Some of the world’s finest gemstone deposits and their respective products are carved out in beautiful jewelry

pieces and are marketed to embellish womanhood. Gems like emeralds, amethysts and rubies are mined by Gemfields and then stoned in the finest ornaments which are significant enough to allure the splendor of a lady.

Gemfields did justice with their fine pieces of luxury jewelry and welcomed Ted star Mila Kunis as their global ambassador. The 29-year-old actress has been signed up to endorse the brand, which is known for its commitment to ethical gem quarrying.

“If someone presents you a gift with a gemstone in it, knowing that they put thought into where it came from gives it more meaning, It’s easy to buy something that looks impressive, but knowing that it’s ethically sourced and that no one suffered to produce it is, to my mind, the most important thing.” - Mila Kunis

During her tour to Gemfields mines in Africa, she was awestruck and captivated. She was enthralled to witness the staff at work and their drudgery. She said “They take so much pride in their work and they take such good care of their employees”. Mila was enthusiastic to learn about the emeralds, rubies and amethysts first-hand before harmonizing to become the face of the firm, because she wanted to be familiar with the artifact that she is about to uphold.

Kunis said“I’ve done that once before and it’s one of the hardest things to do... to pitch a product you don’t stand by. The short of it is, I went and visited (Gemfields) in Africa and they are one of the most loveliest companies (sic) I had the pleasure of actually touring, let alone being a part of. They take care of their community, they put up schools, and they teach the people how to farm vegetables. I mean it sounds so dated and so simple, but very rarely do people take the time. They say they do, and on paper they do, but in real life they don’t.”

The Dubai Polo Gold Cup was founded in 2009 by an independent committee of polo players, esteemed members of the UAE business and people with a passion for polo and sport in order to further advance the development of polo in the United Arab

Emirates and wider region.

With its exciting mix of top-class sportsmanship and glamor, the tournament has earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious events on the international polo calendar. It’s also one of the most important annual tournaments in the region and always attracts a high profile crowd. This year it looks set to be more popular than ever and some of the most respected names from the world of polo have confirmed their participation. Under the banner of the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), the Gold Cup is played according to HPA rules and the provision of umpires will be managed under strict international supervision by the HPA.

“I am proud to see Dubai playing host to yet another top polo event,” said Mohammed Al Habtoor, the chairman of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series “Each year the event reaches new heights. Dubai has quickly gained popularity and found its place on the Polo world stage.”

He added, “In 2012, the Dubai Gold Cup Series was recognized by the World Polo Tour (WPT). We have been privileged to attract some big names to the event year after year. Of course it is lovely to see many familiar faces (players, officials and spectators), but it is also great to see new faces on and off the field. This year we have upped the stakes by increasing the handicap from 15 to 16 goals. This means the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series (Dubai Open) is now the highest handicapped tournament in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.”

The premier polo competition which commenced on 25th February, 2013 culminated on Friday, March 15, 2013 and played host to some of the best polo teams from around the world, including top players from the UAE, Argentina and England.

Six teams took part in the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series: Habtoor Polo, Mahra Polo, Zedan Polo, Bin Drai Polo, Abu Dhabi Polo and Ghantoot Polo. Of these, Habtoor Polo team and Ghantoot Polo Team made it to the finals. Habtoor Polo Team consisted of Mohammed Al Habtoor, Ignacio Bello, Ezequiel Martínez Ferrario and Guillermo Cutino whereas Ghantoot Polo Team consisted of Ali Al Merri, Juan Zubiaurre Canal, Facundo Sola and Pelayo Berazadi. Eventually, Ghantoot Polo Team won the Dubai Gold Cup 2013 beating the Habtoor Polo Team with a score of 14-6 in an awesome display of talent by the young Abu Dhabi team.

The Foundation Cartier pour l’art

At once a creative space for artists and a place where art and the general public can meet, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art) is dedicated to promoting and raising public awareness

of contemporary art. Each year, the Fondation Cartier organizes a program of exhibitions based on either individual artists or themes, and commissions work from artists, thus enriching an important collection. It also organizes the Nomadic Nights, a rendezvous that focuses on the performing arts, where artists explore links between the visual arts and other forms of contemporary artistic expression. Exhibitions and the collections itself are frequently sent to institutions abroad, enhancing the Fondation Cartier’s international profile.

Patronage in the Cartier styleInitiated in 1984 by Alain Dominique Perrin, President of Cartier International at the time, on a suggestion by the artist César, and directed by Hervé Chandès, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain is a unique example of corporate philanthropy in France. A pioneer in its field, Cartier has been supporting contemporary art by commissioning works of art, organizing exhibitions and developing an important collection that testifies to its commitment. Through the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Cartier conveys the image of a company that is alert to the most contemporary creative offerings and which has created a space for artistic expression that is both highly individual and liberating. The Fondation Cartier has quickly outgrown the purely formal framework of traditional patronage, becoming a prime mover in the world of contemporary artistic creation. A lively environment for exchanging ideas and discussions, it has built up sustained relationships with its artists, supporting their work through exhibitions, commissions and publications.

The mixing of genresAs a reflection of our times, the Fondation Cartier embraces all creative fields and genres of contemporary art, ranging from design to photography, from painting to video art and from fashion to performance art. This testifies to the Fondation Cartier’s commitment and skill, to its blend of rigor and eclecticism which opens up contemporary art and renders it more accessible. Recognized on the international artistic scene and hailed by the public, the Fondation

Cartier distinguishes itself by its curiosity, originality and heterogeneity.

Artist commissionsCommissioning works of art is an essential aspect of the Fondation Cartier’s activities. It is a constructive way of supporting artists by sponsoring the creation of a single work, a series of works or a complete exhibition. During this process, the relationship developed between the Fondation Cartier and the artist goes beyond mere patronage. It becomes a truly creative partnership, from the conception to the execution of the work. It gives the artist the opportunity not only to create something original, but to explore new horizons: working on a different scale, bringing a project to fruition, realizing a dream… This commissioning policy was initiated in 1984 with a program of workshops and artistic residencies in Jouy-en-Josas, where a wide range of very different artists made their presence felt: Marc Couturier in 1987, Jean-Michel Othoniel in 1989, Absalon, Fabrice Hybert, Huang Yong Ping and Chéri Samba in 1990, Cai Guo-Qiang and Tatsuo Miyajima in 1993.

A spirit of discoveryFrom its very beginnings, the Fondation Cartier has been highly successful in its discovery of new talent. As a springboard for young artists exhibiting for the first time, or for those hitherto unknown in Europe, the Fondation Cartier has helped many of them achieve international recognition. In 1994, for example, the Fondation Cartier commissioned a monumental video installation from Pierrick Sorin, who has since become a widely-known video artist esteemed throughout the world. In 1995, it exhibited an installation entitled Bucky, From Chemistry to Design by a young designer named Marc Newson. In 1998, for an exhibition called être nature, it commissioned a vertical garden for the glass façade of Jean Nouvel’s building from an artist called Patrick Blanc, who, until then, was relatively unknown to the general public. In 2005, the Fondation Cartier introduced the French public to the work of Ron Mueck, an Australian hyper-realist sculptor, and also displayed a panoramic overview of the work of young artists around the world in an exhibition entitled J’en rêve. J’en rêve brought together the work of more than 60 young artists, several of whom have since achieved international renown. In 2007, the Korean artist Lee Bul held his first solo exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in Paris.

An Architectural Creation by Jean NouvelIn 1994, the Fondation Cartier moved, exchanging Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles for the boulevard Raspail in the heart of Paris. Its new premises were designed by Jean Nouvel, an architect celebrated in France and throughout the world for the unique way in which he “dematerializes” architectural structure. He also famously designed the Institut du Monde Arabe (1987) and the Musée du Quai Branly (2006), both in Paris. As regards the Fondation Cartier, Jean Nouvel’s achievement was to harmoniously combine 1,200 m2 of exhibition space with six floors of office space. For the external façade, he designed a glass screen running parallel to the boulevard Raspail that would prolong the boulevard’s perspective. Behind this transparent wall, a cedar of Lebanon planted by Chateaubriand in 1823 emerges from amonumental flower pot clad with multi-colored mosaics, a witty creation by the Italian designer Alessandro Mendini. Above the entrance to the building rises a wall of plants commissioned in 1998 from Patrick Blanc, a specialist in tropical botany and the creator of this innovative design. The main body of the building itself is set back from the boulevard. The façades on each side extend outward to seamlessly merge the architecture of the building with the gardens. Acting both as windows and mirrors, the glass walls allow the spectator glimpses of the works exhibited, or reflect the drifting clouds and the urban environment. As a result, the building is in perpetual metamorphosis according to the time of day or night. Inside, Jean Nouvel has created a flexible space that encourages artists to appropriate the architecture and to modify and inhabit the space throughout the duration of their exhibitions. Every project provides new possibilities for reinventing the space. Opening directly onto the gardens and with a ceiling height of 8 meters, the completely modular ground floor can be darkened for film video projections and installations. It has large glass windows that can slide and thus be made to disappear, transforming the building into a vast raised structure on stilts that opens onto a garden.

ExhibitionsWith five major events per year, the program alternates thematic exhibitions with solo exhibitions devoted to single artists. Both types provide an opportunity for the Fondation Cartier to commission specific works from individual artists, some of which then come to enrich the collection. Such exhibitions are important dates in artists’ careers, and sometimes even in the history of contemporary art. Since 1984, almost 200 exhibitions have been organized in France in all fields of artistic expression, from painting to video, from design to photography and from fashion to sculpture and monumental installations.

A CollectionThe manifest determination to collect contemporary works and to take part in their genesis distinguishes the Fondation Cartier, and is a concrete expression of its involvement in the world of art. From the outset, the intention of the Fondation Cartier was to build a collection committed to living artists. The collection reflects the diversity of art today, created by idiosyncratic approaches, contradictory movements and powerful personalities. Every year, it is enriched with work that constitutes future legacies, selected by an international committee of professionals from the art world. Currently containing more than 1000 works by over 300 artists of more than 40 different nationalities, the collection bears witness to the Fondation Cartier’s vision of contemporary art. It provides a retrospective of the major trends that have shaped artistic creation in France and abroad since the 1980s, and is naturally open to all forms of artistic creation: painting, sculpture, video, photography, installations, design and filmmaking. The collection is comprised of works by recognized artists, young creators, foreign artists, and “unclassifiable” projects. The Fondation Cartier makes long-term commitments to artists and supports them from the beginnings of their careers. For example, the Fondation Cartier encouraged and accompanied Jean-Michel Otoniel, Pierrick Sorin and Vincent Beaurin from a very early stage. Similarly, young French talent was encouraged in 2005 by the J’en rêve project, where work was commissioned from Camille Henrot, Thomas Lélu and Clémence Périgon. Thanks to traveling exhibitions of the collection abroad, these young artists have acquired fame beyond

the French frontiers. The international artistic scene is of particular interest to the Fondation Cartier. Many foreign artists are represented in its collection, including Huang Yong Ping (China), Yukio Nakagawa (Japan), Alair Gomes (Brazil), William Kentridge (South Africa), Thomas Demand (Germany), Guillermo Kuitca (Argentina), Bodys Isek Kingelez (Congo), Ron Mueck (Australia) and Adriana Varejão (Brazil). The collection also contains groups of works by artists whose careers the Fondation Cartier continues to follow, such as Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Gérard Garouste, Alain Séchas, James Coleman, Raymond Depardon or William Eggleston. Over the years and through various projects and acquisitions, it has established special ties with artists whose work does not fit easily into the more usual context of institutions and museums. This is notably the case for David Hammons, Panamarenko and Jean-Michel Alberola.

An International DimensionFrom its inauguration, the Fondation Cartier has worked at creating and maintaining an impressive international network and ties with some of the world’s most eminent institutions. Every year, it pursues and develops its active presence abroad. After being premiered in Paris, many exhibitions go “on tour” to important foreign institutions. Almost 100 exhibitions have been displayed throughout the world thanks to this policy. The Seydou Keita exhibition was shown four times in Europe and three times in the United States, whilst Issey Miyake’s exhibition was shown in New York and Tokyo. Francesca Woodman’s photographs were exhibited on six occasions in Europe, the work of Pierrick Sorin took off for Barcelona, while the work of Takashi Murakami and William Eggleston traveled to London. Since 1990, various works sponsored by the Fondation Cartier have been donated to a town, a country or an institution, facilitating the discovery of French artists on each occasion. Before it was donated to the Centre Pompidou in 1997, the Pot doré (“Gilded Pot”) by Jean-Pierre Raynaud, commissioned in 1985, was sent from Berlin to Peking at the behest of the Fondation Cartier. In 1991, it donated César’s monumental sculpture, The Flying Frenchman, to the city of Hong Kong. In perfect harmony with the site for which it was specially created, this sculpture was the first work to be commissioned by the Fondation Cartier as a donation.

Artist of the Month - Kamrooz Aram

A journey from a baroque design to an elusive stroke.

Kamrooz Arty Avowal

In his artist statement, Kamrooz wrote, “These paintings are representative of an exploration of the parts (i.e., struggle, contradiction, transformation, longing, etc.) as well as the search for the whole (i.e., the beautiful, complete, balanced image). In these paintings, Islamic geometric patterns are combined with loosely painted organic forms, at times deliberately breaking the steady rhythms, other times quite randomly allowing the painting to paint itself.”

Kamrooz Aram is an Iranian contemporary artist whose work is a pictorial representation of his very strong taste of the themes relating to the systems of belief including nationalist, religious, and artistic ideologies.

Aram’s work uses iconography as well as intellection to present the spectator with the similes that dare reductive ways of seeing some of the sensitive issues of today. Aram’s diverse practice often engages the complicated relationship between outmoded Western art and Western modernism. Through a variety of forms including paintings, collages and drawings, he is able to use image-making to function critically as a tool for certain renegotiations of history.

He first instigated exploring his love for the canvas at the age of 17. He was stirred by the cover of a National Geographic magazine revealing an image of a Sicilian lady. He certainly decided that he desired to play with the colors and paint this outstanding portrait. He bought himself acrylic paints and started painting.

“The first thing I immediately discovered was that paint was an expressive substance itself. When I was painting this image of the women, I was not only interested in the image I was working with, but also with the way I could express something by dragging the paint, a certain color over another color, and having that transparency quality to it. I developed an unexplainable sensitivity to it,” –Kamrooz said.

This one painting took Kamrooz to the heights of art and entered into different art high school competitions and placed as a very thriving painting amongst other artistic works. Kamrooz talent was

not only limited to the hues and colors but he was also a very worthy and lively musician. He often uses his music to explain his art. “My art can be compared to the experience of a musician,” he said. “When I approach my canvas it’s like doing a series of performances - there is an idea of what you are working on and you go through the concrete steps to achieve your final composition; however there is a space where you are free to improvise and explore, there is a point when the self disappears. Although it does not happen every time, it is what drives the creative spirit.”

Aram’s innovation is remarkable as he takes a flat detail of carpet design and creates depth to it, layering the image and pattern. It’s his journey from an ornate scheme to an intangible lash to an impressionistic version. Kamrooz said: “My most recent paintings draw compositional and color influences from Persian rugs. Though the grid is usually invisible, as with frays of a rug, in the paintings, it is left exposed in places, showing, the process and history of the painting’s development.”

Asal Fallah

Asal Fallah – A Tehranian Artist was born in 1983. In 2005, she received her Bachelor of Arts in painting. During the course of her studies, she had the chance to work with several professors. Asal attained a dignified place in the artistic world in a relatively short time span due to her novelty and pure adoration of art. Asal describes her My World series, a collection of over 200 drawings produced over a ten-year period, as being a representation of her ‘mental ambience, needs, and daily experiences’, as well as her dreams. This collection not only serves as Asal’s visual autobiography’ but also allows her and her audience to outdo veracity into the demesne of dreams and imagination. Working with black pen on cardboard is not only Asal’s stylistic penchant and a defining characteristic of her work, but also a cradle of ‘tranquillity’ for the young artist. Similarly, Asal describes producing the works in the My World series as being very relaxing for her, as she was able to share her ‘sorrows and loneliness’ with her audience. In the artist’s own words, regarding the production of her vast collection, ‘it was only myself, my mind, and my heart’.

Sasan Nasarnia

Calligrapher, painter and musician Sasan Nasernia, was born in 1974 in Tehran. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design in Tehran in 1997. As a graphic artist, Persian and Arabic words and letter forms never stopped to fascinate him. Although digital lettering was the trend of that time, Sasan grew to realize that it wasn’t his method of choice to mollify his utter vehemence for art. This led him to start creating unique calligraphic paintings, as the means to express his artistry and self-exploration. In search of his own language and style over recent years, Sasan has resorted to a minimalistic approach as a result of his “less is more” motto. The majority of his works are monochromic and dichromic, where the intertwined letter forms are created promptly, considered as the melody of intoned poetry. Since 2008, Sasan has held various solo and group exhibitions in galleries in both Tehran and Dubai.

Nima Hashemian

Nima Hashemian was born in Tehran in 1974. Inspired by his father, an architect, and strongly encouraged by his mother, Nima pursued the arts from a young age. Nima focused his attention on traditional Persian and Oriental painting. Later, he attended the University of Arts, where he began experimenting with sculpture, greatly swaying his painting style. As well, a host of personal projects during this period, such as producing frescoes. Since 2007, Nima has reconnoitred the theme of the ‘modern man’, and his beliefs and essence. According to Nima, the modern man is composed of various layers, and his paintings reflect the vigorous coinciding of these layers, exposing them fully. As well, Nima’s recent works also examine the relationship between him and his daughter, and their multi-layered existence.

Happenstances of time. The Atmos Hermès clock – limited edition crystal

clock that quite literally lives on air.

The result of the collaborative effort of Hermès, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Les Cristalleries de St. Louis, the Atmos Hermès clock is a striking demonstration of the fact that time is a true ally: one that has facilitated the three Houses to combine

their expertise in order to create this 176-piece limited edition crystal clock that quite literally lives on air.

Pellucidity rubs shoulders with opalescence; glass meets metal, artistic craftsmanship combines the adamant nature of metal with the delicate vulnerability of crystal: such are the defining characteristics of the Atmos Hermès table clock. By giving substance to an immaterial reality, it forges a strong bond between humankind, its environment and an eternally

intriguing principle: that of time.

123 | Eveningz | Lifestyle

Page 127: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Encounters born of time

Expertise carefully refined over the decades; a thirst for innovation; a philosophy based on high standards: all of the Houses united in crafting the Atmos Hermès clock share the same values, including, first and foremost, a vision of time inextricably bound up with hand workmanship often referred to by the French word “bienfacture” and best translated as fine craftsmanship. The astonishing crystal sphere thus houses a unique, almost perpetually moving mechanism developed by the Manufacture JaegerLeCoultre. Since 1928, the mechanism of the Atmos clock fascinates by its exceptional mode of operation with no battery, no electric current and no winding. It lives on air by means of an ingenious principle: a hermetically sealed capsule containing a mixture of gases that expands when the temperature rises and contracts when it drops. Connected to the mainspring of the clock, the capsule acts like a concertina or a pair of bellows, thereby constantly winding the mechanism. It is so sensitive that a one-degree temperature difference is enough to power it for 48 hours. Its balance oscillates just twice a minute rather than the average 300 times of a classic wristwatch, which consumes 250 times more energy than an Atmos clock. The 190 parts that compose this clever construction are precision-assembled within the Manufacture.

Pursuing this demanding hand-crafted approach, Hermès entrusted Les Cristalleries de Saint-Louis glassmakers with creating the astonishing exterior of this clock: a crystal globe made using the so-called doublé or double overlay technique, which consists in coating layers of glass over each other, including a colored one. Within the company, only six master glassmakers have the mastery and experience required to perform this task.

The making

First of all, the glassblower uses his blowpipe or gathering iron to collect the molten white enamel and fashions it so as to form a ball known as a gather; he then blows short puffs of air into this mass, all the while regularly heating it; before working it further using a maillot or shaping block, a ladle-like wooden tool used to shape the glass into a glass bubble. This first stage of production is rendered even more difficult by the opacity of the material that prevents the artisan from seeing the various layers of the enamel. In parallel, four master glassmakers prepare a light-colored glass mass using the shaping block and heat it to give it a spherical shape.

Then comes the drape operation: the glassmaker uses the tip of his blowpipe to isolate the white enamel, into which another master glassmaker pours the light-colored glass. The dualistic layered materials are then worked together and placed in a mold that is then blown to form a sphere measuring around 30 centimeters in diameter. The latter is placed in an annealing oven that serves to progressively cool it down in order to avoid the glass shattering. Once cooled down, the sphere that now weighs around ten kilos is perforated in the spot where the mechanism will be inserted. After this, using previously drawn markings, it is cut so as to reveal transparent pearl-like beads, and then polished to create subtle light effects. It is thus within this subtle blend of opalescence and transparency that the clock mechanism is fitted, thereby composing a rare object which represents the quintessence of the craftsmanship spirit. For while the Atmos clock counts off the minutes and hours, it represents, first and foremost, the time dedicated by the artisans: years of apprenticeship and patiently acquired expertise, the time required for the mastery of each of these remarkable and singular skills.

Introduces Both the GPSMAP® 8000 MFD and GPSMAP 8500 Black Box Series

Integrating the Look and Feel of a Glass Helm

Garmin International Inc. is a subsidiary of Garmin Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation. Since 1989, this group of companies has designed, manufactured,

marketed and sold navigation, communication and information devices and applications – most of which are enabled by GPS technology. Garmin’s products serve automotive, mobile, wireless, outdoor recreation, marine, aviation, and OEM applications. A component of the S&P 500 index, Garmin Ltd. is incorporated in Switzerland, and its principal subsidiaries are located in the United States, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

Garmin International Inc. announced on February 14th 2013 the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series, their newest flagship series added to an already extensive line of multi-function devices. Introducing a true glass helm appearance into the boating industry, the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series boasts powerful new features and a revamped user-interface with a streamlined design that can make any helm look custom-built.

“The GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series features the ultimate in simplicity, ease-of-use, power and speed,” said Dan Bartel, vice president of worldwide sales. “Incorporating the look and feel of a glass helm into the marine industry, the Glass Helm series provides a beautiful centerpiece while delivering the most important features and capabilities to the user.”

Offering an 8-inch SVGA, 12-inch and 15-inch XGA multi-touch, pinch-to-zoom multi-function display, the GPSMAP 8000 MFD series boasts a lower profile than previous multi-function models. With the 12-inch and 15-inch models being 30% and 32% thinner, respectively, the 8000 MFD series can easily fit into a pre-existing space where previous MFD units were installed. In addition to a smaller frame, the 8000 units have 40% more processing power than previous models, allowing for faster user experience.

129 | Eveningz | Connoisseurs

Page 133: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

Combined with a user-interface that’s designed for efficiency, the GPSMAP 8000 MFD series proves to be essential for any helm. The refreshed interface has been streamlined to help access the most important menus and settings and provides a more intuitive and accessible experience for the user in all languages. With a user control bar docked at the bottom of the screen, information such as waypoints, autopilot and the home menu are only a finger touch away.

In addition to the release of the GPSMAP 8000 MFD series, Garmin is also proud to introduce the GPSMAP 8500 Black Box series, an elegantly efficient solution for larger vessels with more helm space. Offering a 15-inch XGA, 17-inch or 19-inch SXGA multi-touch, pinch-to-zoom monitor to use with the black box, the GPSMAP 8500 Black Box series allows for easy installation wherever the user chooses and to outfit the 2.16-inch slim monitor directly in the helm. Having an independent, detached black box allows for better system cooling, larger screen size capability and easier installation. And because the Black Box series monitors are high resolution, they can receive up to a 1080p HD resolution video.

With a fully integrated glass display, the sleek GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series brings an elegant and customized appearance by offering a new, flat-mounting option that transforms the vessel’s bridge into a glass helm. The new series can also be installed by traditional flush mounting, providing a very low profile alternative.

A valuable new feature offered on the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series is SmartMode™ station control. With SmartMode, the mariner can customize numerous preset modes based off of various activities. With the simplicity of only two button pushes, SmartMode can instantly synchronize all displays to show the most desirable screens for a particular activity. Auto-dimming and power is also synced across displays, providing the easiest, most intuitive controls ever offered in our multi-function units and allowing for a custom experience to every user.

With the ability to utilize Garmin’s high-sensitivity 10Hz GPS/GLONASS external receiver, the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series is able to update position and heading ten times per second, providing significantly smoother on-screen navigation. This industry-leading GPS receiver dramatically improves the ability to mark and navigate to a waypoint and also allows for vessel movement to be crisp and fluid on screen.

Steering with autopilot has never been easier with our new on-screen autopilot controls. With a customization that allows the user to create a quarter- or full-screen autopilot display, the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series works in conjunction with the autopilot head unit to guide the vessel to where the user needs to go. The perfect accessory to accompany the new Glass Helm series is the GRID™ (Garmin Remote Input Device). GRID, sold separately, is a remote device that allows for seamless navigation between an individual or multiple displays. GRID can be integrated into a captain’s chair for a low-profile controlling solution. As if all of this is not enough, if fishing is your weekend hobby, Garmin helps you find the best location to catch fish in any open water location. You will be able to accurately map where exactly fish groups are and save yourself the hassle of having to guess where they may be.

The GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series is scheduled to be available in the second quarter of 2013. For additional information regarding the GPSMAP 8000 Glass Helm series, visit www.garmin.com/8000.

Racing ahead: McLarenThe McLaren 12C named Middle East’s “Car of the Year”

Page 135: Eveningz Magazine Issue 16

McLaren Automotive is a British manufacturer of luxury, high-performance sports cars, located at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, Surrey.

Following the company’s global launch in 2010, McLaren Automotive launched the groundbreaking 12C and 12C Spider. The brand continues to expand, operating through a dedicated global network of retailers in every major automotive market.

The connection between Formula 1 and road cars at McLaren is a natural process of experience, knowledge, principles and process transfer. Through the integration of 50 years of Formula 1 racing expertise and knowledge, and 20 years of heritage in producing landmark sports cars, McLaren Automotive designs, develops and builds the technologically advanced, groundbreaking and no compromise 12C and 12C Spider.

McLaren has pioneered the use of carbon fiber in vehicle production over the past 30 years, and since introducing a carbon chassis into racing and road cars with the 1981 McLaren MP4/1 and 1993 McLaren F1 respectively, McLaren has not built a car without a carbon fiber chassis.

The McLaren 12C won the prestigious Middle East Motor Awards ‘Car of the Year’ title ahead of 17 other category winners. The 12C named ‘Best Supercar’ at the end of a successful first full year of sales for McLaren. McLaren Automotive received two awards, including overall ‘Car of the Year’, for its debut model, the 12C, at the 2012 Middle East Motor Awards. The 12C was rated ahead of almost 50 car models, including some of the world’s top supercar models, by a jury panel comprising of the region’s top automotive experts across 17 categories.

The Middle East Motor Awards are the region’s most prestigious automotive accolades, judged by a jury panel that includes 17 of the region’s most influential motoring journalists from nine countries. This is the

first year a McLaren model has taken part in the awards, and the 12C was named ‘Best Supercar’, before being crowned with the overall title of ‘Car of the Year’. These honors cap a successful first year of sales across the world for the brand. Speaking at the awards ceremony, organizer Saif Al Midfa, Director General of Expo Centre Sharjah: “The 12C is a clear winner for ‘Car of the Year’. McLaren’s debut model is a stunning car and worthy of making the ultimate wish list for any automotive fan.” Mark Harrison, Regional Director for Middle East and Africa said: “To win ‘Best Supercar’ in the Middle East is an amazing achievement coming in our very first full year as a luxury sports car manufacturer. But to win the overall ‘Car of the Year’ title is unbelievable.”

“It is a great reward for all the skilled and passionate designers and engineers back at McLaren and our retail partners in the region who have worked incredibly hard to launch the brand. But the real winners, I believe, are our first customers. They are driving the Middle East’s ‘Car of the Year’.”

McLaren Automotive strives to be at the forefront of innovation; this is what has enabled McLaren to win one in every four of the Formula 1 races in which they have entered since first competing in the sport nearly 50 years ago. The 12C also benefits from this race-winning technology with features such as the pioneering Brake Steer and carbon fibre MonoCell which allow the 12C to offer dynamic driving capabilities unlike any other car in its segment.

The 12C was launched in the Middle East in November 2011, and has since achieved sales of over 1,000 cars worldwide, and more than 100 in the Middle East. McLaren Automotive’s Middle East retail network of specialist, luxury automotive retailers is located in prestigious venues across Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and there is also a service center in Lebanon.

From unlocking the device with a swipe towards top from the bottom of the screen to using the left to right swipe to access BlackBerry Hub - a name for the unified notification center - gestures play a big role in the new OS. Under the direction of Basel’s architect Jacques Gros, a place to relax and unwind was opened, which later on

changed into the luxury hotel. The hotel expanded with the passage of time and today it stands out as one of the finest recreational and romantic place. In 2004, Dolder Grand proprietor Urs E. Schwarzenbach and Managing Director Thomas Schmid sought out eminent draughtsman Lord Norman Foster to helm the momentous hotel’s essential renewals.

Foster further added two up-to-the-minute annexes with sweeping glass frontages to either side of the hotel’s 19th century chief edifice with traditional woody frame, chiseled sunshades and fairy tale belfries. Each room is furnished with a classy and refined

European elegance. Ambient igniting and lush fabrics in cowed mauve form a soft ambience, while regal patterns in dramatic shades flourishes and gives an aristocratic feel. By the espousal of its historic ancestries, the Dolder Grand’s rationalized style wages reverence to the past while exemplifying modern luxury.

zeitgeist. Inspired by the actress Giulietta Masina, The Dolder Grand’s Masina suite has a touch of the fascination and glamor from the films of 1950’s epoch. Likewise the Maestro Suites are enthused by Maestro Herbert von Karajan, the conductor with an influence of traditional music and classical architecture.
