Coat of Arms of His Excellency, The Most Reverend

Donald Joseph Hying, Bishop of Gary

BLAZON: Arms impaled. Dexter; Bary of seven Sable and Argent; at the nombril point a thurible emanating to chief three tongues of smoke below two wings all Or. Sinister: Quarterly: I, Gules an eagle displayed Argent; II, of the second a Sacred Heart Proper; III, Of the second a rose of the first, barbed and seeded Proper, IV, gyronny of the first and sec-ond.

SIGNIFICANCE:

The episcopal heraldic achievement, or bishop’s coat of arms, is composed of a shield, that is the cen-tral and most important part of the design and tells to whom the design belongs, the external ornamen-tation, that tells the owner’s position or rank, and a motto, placed upon a scroll. By heraldic tradition the design is described (blazoned) as if being done by the bearer with the shield being worn on the arm. Thus, where it applies the terms “sinister” and “dexter” are reversed as the design is viewed from the front. For the bishop of a diocese, called an “Ordinary,” the left side of the shield is given over to the arms of his jurisdiction; in this case the Diocese of Gary The arms of the diocese are composed of a field that is seven alternating black and silver (white) bars, to represent the Seven Sacraments and the steel ingots that so dominated the See City for so many years. Upon the field are two gold (yellow) angel wings to honor the titulars of the Cathedral-Church in Gary, the Cathedral of the Holy Angels. Below the wings is a thurible emitting three tongues of smoke expressing the Scriptural reference to prayers rising to The Father as smoke rises. (Psalm 141) For his personal arms, seen in the dexter impalement of the design, Bishop Hying, has retained the arms that were adopted upon his selection to receive the fullness of Christ’s most holy Priesthood, when he became bishop, to serve as an Auxiliary Bishop of Milwaukee. Bishop Hying’s arms are divided into four quarters. The first quarter (chief dexter) is a red field on which is displayed a silver (white) eagle displayed. This is to honor Saint John, the Evangelist, patron of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and it is combined with the pattern in the fourth quarter, red and silver (white) gyronny, the field of the arms of Milwaukee, where Bishop Hying has served his entire ministry until his call to service God’s Holy People in the Diocese of Gary. The second quarter, on a silver (white) field displays the Most Sacred Heart, presented “Proper,” or “as it normally appears,” and the third quarter contains a red rose. These charges are to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Theresa, “The Little Flower,” to whom Bishop Hying has deep devotion. For his motto, His Excellency, Bishop Hying has retained the phrase from Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 13:8) which expresses in Latin, “CARITAS NUMQUAM EXCIDIT,” the pro-found Christian doctrine that in all that we do, we should do it with love, because “LOVE NEVER FAILS.” The achievement is completed with the external ornaments that are a gold (yellow) processional cross, that extends above and below the shield, and a pontifical hat, called a galero, with its six tassels, in three rows, on either side of the shield, all in green. These are the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969.

PSALM—SALMO 44/45 Antiphon Cantor:

The Psalm continues on the next page —

page 13

Cantor: My heart overflows with noble words. To the king I must speak the song I have made; my tongue as nimble as the pen of a scribe.

Choir: You are the fairest of the children of men and graciousness is poured upon your lips: because God has blessed you for evermore.

Assembly: O mighty one, gird your sword u-pon your thigh; in splendor and state, ride on in triumph for the cause of truth and goodness and right.

Cantor: Take aim with your bow in your dread right hand. Your arrows are sharp: peoples fall beneath you. The foes of the king fall down and lose heart.

Choir: Your throne, O God, shall endure for ever. A scepter of justice is the scepter of your kingdom. Your love is for justice; your hatred for evil.

Assembly: Therefore God, your God, has a-noin-ted you with the oil of gladness above o-ther kings: your robes are fragrant with aloes and myrrh.

Cantor: From the ivory palace you are greeted with music. The daughters of kings are among your loved ones. On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

Choir: Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words: forget your own people and your father’s house. So will the king desire your beauty: he is your lord, pay homage to him.

Antiphon ALL: Silent Prayer—Orar en Silencio (sit) Collect—Colecta (stand)

Assembly: And the people of Tyre shall come with gifts, the richest of the people shall seek your favor. The daughter of the king is clothed with splendor, her robes embroidered with pearls set in gold.

Cantor: She is led to the king with her maiden companions. They are escorted amid gladness and joy; they pass within the palace of the king.

Choir: Sons shall be yours in place of your fathers: you will make them princes over all the earth. May this song make your name for ever remembered. May the peoples praise you from age to age.

Assembly and Choir: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Ho-ly Spirit: as it was in the begin-ing, is now, and will be for ever. A-men.

NEW TESTAMENT CANTICLE — Ephesians 1: 3-10 (sit) CÁNTICO NUEVO TESTAMENT — Ef 1, 3-10 Antiphon-Cantor then Assembly:

Choir: Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has bestowed on us in Christ every spiritual blessing in the heavens.

Choir:

God chose us in him before the world began to be holy and blameless in his sight.

Choir:

He predestined us to be his adopted sons through Jesus Christ, such was his will and pleasure, that all might praise the glorious favor he has bestowed on us in his beloved.

Choir:

In him and through his blood, we have been redeemed, and our sins forgiven, so immeasurably generous is God’s favor .

Choir:

God has given us the wisdom to understand fully the mystery, the plan he was pleased to decree in Christ.

Choir:

A plan to be carried out in Christ, in the fullness of time, to bring all things into one in him, in the heavens and on earth.

Choir:

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING — 1 Corinthians 12;31 — 13:13 (sit) Set you hearts on the greater gifts. Now I will show you the way which surpasses all the others. If I speak with human tongues and angelic as well, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong, a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and, with full knowledge, comprehend all mysteries, if I have faith great enough to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give everything I have to fee the poor and hand over my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind. Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs, it is not snobbish. Love is never rude, it is not self seeking, it is not prone to anger; neither does it brood over injuries. Love does not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoices with the truth. There is no limit to love’s forbearance, to its trust, its hope, its power to endure. Love never fails. Prophecies will cease, tongues will be silent, knowledge will pass away. Our knowledge is imperfect and our prophesying is imperfect. When the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. When I was a child I used to talk like a child, think like a child, reason like a child. When I became a man I put childish ways aside. Now we see indistinctly, as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. My knowledge is imperfect now; then I shall know even as I am known. There are in the end three things that last: faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love.

HOMILY—HOMILÍA CHOIR RESPONSE—LA RESPUESTA DEL CORO

Of the Father’s love begotten Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the Source, the Ending He, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see Evermore and evermore. Oh, that birth forever blessed When the Virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, Bore the Savior of our race, And the Babe, the world’s Redeemer, First revealed His sacred face Evermore and evermore.

O ye heights of heaven, adore Him; Angel hosts, His praises sing; Powers, dominions, bow before Him And extol our God and King. Let no tongue on earth be silent, Every voice in concert ring Evermore and evermore. This is He whom Heaven-taught singers Sang of old with one accord; Whom the Scriptures of the prophets Promised in their faithful word. Now He shines, the Long-expected; Let creation praise its Lord Evermore and evermore.

Christ, to Thee, with God the Father, And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving And unending praises be, Honor, glory, and dominion, And eternal victory Evermore and evermore. Antiphon Cantor then Assembly:

BLESSING OF PONTIFICAL INSIGNIA (sit) Every Catholic bishop is given the use of special insignia. The bishop's ring, bearing his new coat of arms, is a seal of his fidelity to the Church of Gary, the bride of Christ given to him for his love and protection. The pectoral cross is an outward sign of identification with Christ, the crucified savior. The miter bears the image of the diocesan patrons, the Holy Angels, and on its lappets the crest of the Diocese of Gary. The crosier or pastoral staff is a sign of the Bishop's pastoral office to keep watch over the whole flock as the shepherd of the Church of Gary. All the insignia are original works constructed for the new bishop as a gift from the priests of the diocese.
