Different strategies

Page 11: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Why'd we switch?

Reason #1Cost

(In no particular order)

Page 12: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

The Windows tax

(Don't get smug, Apple fans – There's a Mac tax, too.)

Page 13: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

The power of free

(With apologies to Chris Anderson.)

Page 14: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Why'd we switch?

Reason #2Security & continuity

Page 15: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Sad but true

Page 16: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Need more stuff on security

User's settings are easier to maintain.

Settings are easier to change.

No 3rd party anti-virus is required.

Fewer administrative privileges given to users by default.

Security updates are made and pushed out quickly.

Page 17: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Why'd we switch?

Reason #3Efficiency

Page 18: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Breathe life into old hardware

The specs:

Processor: 800 Mhz Pentium IIIRAM: 512 MBHDD: 20 GBCirca: 2000

At their death, they ran Ubuntu 9.04

Page 19: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Or make new hardware wickedly fast

The specs:

Processor: 2.6 Ghz quad core AMD Phenom

RAM: 8 GBHDD: 80 GBCirca: 2009

Page 20: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Why'd we switch?

Reason #4Philosophy

Page 21: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Source: Richard Stallman, "The Free Software Definition" (GNU Project)

Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept,

you should think of 'free' as in 'free speech,' not as in 'free beer.'

Page 22: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Why'd we switch?

Reason #5Features

Page 23: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

So what can they do?

Page 24: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Everything IE can do . . .

Page 25: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

So what can they do?

Page 26: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Hey, I can see my house!

Page 27: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

And my library

Page 28: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

So what can they do?

Page 29: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Give us your cameras, your SD cards

Page 30: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Manage your photos with F-Spot

Page 31: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Or just browse them

Page 32: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

So what can they do?

Page 33: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Like Photoshop, but better!

Page 34: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

So what can they do?

Page 35: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Like Clippy, except it's useful

Page 36: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Drag, drop, write

Page 37: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Or make music or video discs

Page 38: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

So what can they do?

Page 39: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

If you can use Word . . .

Page 40: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Writer

Page 41: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Calc

Page 42: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Impress

Page 43: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

We can even do multimedia

Page 44: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Of the removeable kind, too

Page 45: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Browse files easily

Page 46: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

And a few more things

Page 47: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

The staff's favorite part?

Automatic shutdown!

Page 48: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

But it wasn't all simple and rosy.

Page 49: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Obstacles we faced

Obstacle #1Printing

Page 50: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Simple on the patron end . . .

Page 51: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

. . . but hardware can get in the way

Say hello to the hellspawn printer.

Main issue:Print jobs taking extremely long to print, sometimes get dropped.

Page 52: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Obstacles we faced

Obstacle #2PDFs

Page 53: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

An unfortunate necessity

Adobe Acrobat

Main issue:Completing, saving and printing fillable forms.

Page 54: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

But no longer

Page 55: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Obstacles we faced

Obstacle #3Flash plugin

Page 56: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

The bane of our existence

Adobe Flash

Main issue:Some Flash animations/applications unplayable.

Okay, admittedly this is a screenshot from Chromium, not Firefox.

Page 57: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

But we can handle most things

Obstacle #4Compatibility

Page 60: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Formatting

Compatibility fix:Defaulting to save in Microsoft formats.

Page 61: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

A glass of Wine a day

Page 64: Even internet computers want to be free: Using Linux and open source software on library public desktops

Our recommendations

Recommendation #1:Make sure that you have an open-minded staff.

Recommendation #2:Try (or at least research) before you buy.

Recommendation #3:Help your patrons by making things look familiar.

Recommendation #4:Accept that trial & error is a given.

Recommendation #5:Don't upgrade your particular flavor of Linux right away. If it ain't broke...
