A year and a half after graduating from Evangel with a degree in man-agement and marketing, Natasha Martin decided to make her dreams of owning her own business a reality. She just never thought it would happen so soon after graduation.

After two weeks of negotiations, countless conversations with several mentors, and many hours of prayer, Natasha became the owner of Panache Boutique. “It all happened very quickly,” she said with a huge smile on her face. “I couldn’t do this without my education. I do my own Quickbooks, marketing mix, and inventory control.”

Natasha realizes that real-world experience is what really prepared her for her business endeavor. Looking back, she said that some of her toughest professors were the ones who prepared her the most, because they gave her a glimpse of their real-world experiences.

Owning the boutique has not been without challenges, though. She works six days a week, and sometimes her hours get very hectic. “It’s so rewarding, though. I think working hard for yourself gives you the biggest satisfaction. Hundreds and hundreds of women come in here, and I have the opportunity to encourage them,” she said.

Her time at Evangel made all of her dreams possible, and she knows that this is where God has placed her; His blessings have made her dreams a success.

ames Wright and his best friend came to eu:24 Spring 2008, and a semester later, they were back to become members of the EU family. See what he had to say about his eu:24 weekend here!

“I walked in the chapel for eu:24 registration, and the place was packed! It was an exciting time to meet future and current EU students; I could tell right off the bat that I was going to fit in perfectly at Evangel.

After registration, I went on a campus tour. I got a true glimpse of college life and loved it! I walked down the hall [of the dorm], and almost every door was open. I met almost everyone on the floor!

Later in the afternoon, I went to a biology class. Students were free to ask questions, and the professors were excited about what they were teaching. After class I was able to meet with Dr. Tenneson from the Science and Technology Department, and he answered all of my questions about the pre-med program. I automatically felt a part of the EU student body.

[Then] the extreme fun began! We went to a service and a concert that night. The concert was Superchick (my favorite), Disciple, KJ-52, and Brit Nicole. Everyone rushed to the front of the chapel; the energy in that place was crazy and awesome! The concert was great, and it was a fun night of singing, laughing, and taking lots of pictures with new friends.

I’ll never forget what an awesome experience eu:24 was for me. It made the transition from high school to college a pleasant experience. After eu:24, there was no doubt in my mind that Evangel was the perfect school for me.”

GET TO KNOW ANDREA STEVENSName: Stevens, AndreaOccupation: Admissions Counselor “The first time I visited campus, I knew that this was where I was supposed to be.” Andrea Stevens, originally from Flushing, Mich., never thought she would end up in Springfield, Mo., but when she arrived for a campus visit, she knew this was the place for her. During her time as a student at EU, Andrea participated in Activities Board, CROSSwalk, Hall and Floor Council, mission trips, intramurals, and was the vice president of her freshman class. Her favorite activities were sports, especially football. In fact, Andrea only lost two intramural football games the entire time she was a student at Evangel. Additionally, her husband Jared, whom she met at Evangel, played for EU as a running back and a receiver. Andrea and Jared share a love of Evangel and even live on campus in Perkins Hall, the dorm for married students. Now an EU Admissions Counselor, Andrea says the transition from student to staff was an easy one. She loved her experience at Evangel and enjoys the opportunity to help others apply to come here, as well. “We ultimately want to set students up to succeed here,” she said. She suggests applying early, coming to a campus visit such as eu:24, and applying for scholarships, not only through the university but also through your church, high school, and community groups.Andrea is so grateful that God brought her here and looks forward to helping others whom God has called to Evangel.

Dear Prospective Student,

Have you ever wanted to experience a different culture? Have you ever wondered how students your age live in other parts of the world? Are you serious about your academic career? Do you like to challenge yourself in new ways? If so, take my advice: study abroad!

I always knew that studying abroad was something I was interested in, so when I started attending Evangel, I looked into its options to study abroad. Evangel offers several study abroad programs with different destinations for you to choose from depending on your interests, skills, and major. This means that there is sure to be one that’s right for you. I chose to travel to Sydney, Australia, to study music (my major) and Australian history for a semester. My experience there changed my life. Learning music from an Aussie point of view was especially exciting and challenging, teaching me more about music than I ever could have learned otherwise. Meeting Christians from other parts of the world was inspiring. Although the course work in school was rigorous, most of what I learned happened outside of the classroom: I went to school with Australian students just like me, stayed with an Australian family, and learned to live just like they do “down under.” I made many friends from the other side of the world that I will have for the rest of my life and looked at the world from a completely different perspective. Studying in Sydney, Australia, took my college degree outside of the university setting and placed it into a culture where every experience is new and full of exciting challenges!

Now that you’ve read about my amazing experience abroad, I know what you’re thinking: How can I get started? I’m glad you asked! Evangel has an awesome team of staff members who are ready to help you become an international student. Evangel staff and faculty are there to answer your questions and guide you every step of the way!So what are you waiting for? Let Evangel help you get out there and see the world!

“I like that I am surrounded by people who also have a strong relationship with God and that all my teachers teach with a Christian point of view.” –Jesika Terry Colorado Springs, CO

“I like that Evangel offers professional degrees for those who are called to serve God in some-thing other than ministry.” –Griffin McGrath Tucson, AZ

“I like that you can’t get a better atmosphere for spiritual growth like the one here at Evangel.” –Zach Coffman Holland, MI

“The best part of the spiritual aspect of Evangel is that it’s pretty diverse. Everyone is at a different place in their spiritual life. Some have been Christians their whole lives, and some are new Christians still trying to figure everything out. You can learn some-thing from everyone because of that.” –Rachel Pearson Ozark, MO

“I like that teachers are involved. How they pray and may do a devo in class. Also, they may be able to answer spiritual questions.” –Bree Martin Parker, CO

“My favorite part about Evangel is that the teachers are open to prayer requests from the students before class.” –Cameron McBeth Wayland, IA

“I love the growth that is start-ing to take place around campus. There is a sense of desperation for God. Ideas such as 24 and 29:11 start as a dream, but turn into reality with all the hard work of the students and guidance of God.” –Joel Yanke

n what she describes as the “greatest test of faith” in her life, an Evangel graduate will pack her belongings and head for the war-torn, impoverished land of Rwanda, Africa. Sarah Ugoletti graduated from Evangel University in 2008 with a major in theatre and a minor in psychology and a calling bigger than she ever imagined.“I am convinced I want to start the next chapter of my life as a part of something bigger than myself…making a difference and helping people, children specifically,” Sarah said. What started as an innate love for children escalated into a test of faith which was ignited during an Evangel Spiritual Emphasis Week on forgiveness. “Forgiveness Week” featured a seminar led by Patrick Mureithi, producer of the documentary Icyizere (Hope): Healing and Rebuilding Communities in Post-Genocidal Rwanda. During “Forgiveness Week,” Mureithi discussed his work in Rwanda and held a question and answer forum following his presentation in which Sarah asked a question that would change her life:“What about the kids who are left trying to figure out right and wrong in the wake of their parents dysfunction?”

Spurred by her desire to work with children, and drawn specifically to those left in the tumultuous wake of the Rwandan genocide, Sarah contacted “Through the Eyes of Children,” a Rwandan organization affiliated with the Imbabazi Orphanage in western Rwanda, which would soon become her new place of employment. At first Sarah was not sure whether or not she would even be paid for the position, but recently she found out that she will not only be compensated, she will also have her own house, a translator, an international telephone so that she can contact her family, and wireless Internet.“I don’t know how long I’ll be there, but it will be for potentially a year. I’m doing my best to stand strong in faith, and at this point I really just want to be obedient and go wherever this takes me. I’ve always felt that I would be working with underprivileged kids somewhere; I just never dreamed that it would be in Rwanda. Now all I can dream about is Rwanda,” Sarah said.

The EU campus is filled with interesting professors. Professors that grab your attention and hold it until your graduation day. Professors that, even after you’re long gone from campus, you’ll think about and ask about. Pro-fessors that are hard and trying, and you wonder how you’re going to sur-vive their class, but in the end, you look back and realize how much you’ve learned in just one semester. Dr. James Edwards is one of those professors. I’m a theatre minor, and as such, I was required to take a theatre appreciation class with Dr. Edwards. I’d heard stories about his class — how he was simultaneously one of the most difficult yet most interesting professors with whom you could take classes.

One of the first things that I realized is that Dr. Edwards is an anomaly. Very few people love and understand the theatre like he does. He is a man who knows his profession backward and forward. He and his wife Twila have seen almost 1,000 plays, and they attend festivals all over the country, even in Canada and England. “For years… we camped at these festivals, for several years with our son, Craig, always in a tent. Twila cooked all of our meals in camp, often using local produce,” he said.

“There are a few reasons why we made this effort to see plays. 1) It is part of my profession. That is, I teach Theatre History, Introduction to Theatre, Shakespeare, Drama Masterpieces, and try to include drama in almost all other classes I teach. 2) Theatre has roots in religion: Greek religion and medieval Christian religion. EU practices integration of faith and learning, and I have training and interest in both the Bible and theatre. 3) Since there is no artistic force more powerful than theatre, I think the church and society in general needs to become more aware of its power to teach moral living. 4) There is no other force in my life which has been more effective in developing Christian compassion, aware-ness of my need to grow in Christ, and Christian hospitality than theatre,” Edwards said.Every department has its own version of Dr. Edwards — someone who is so unique and so full of knowledge that you can’t wait to take another one of his or her classes. All you have to do is come look for them.

I had been excited about auditions since last spring when Mr. Smith decided he was going to do Beauty & the Beast to kick off the new Theatre Music major. As a veteran in both the theatre and music departments, and one of the first to join the new major program, I felt that the spring show would be a great opportunity to gain experience for my resume’.

I knew I would be vying for the main role of “Belle” along with many other girls, so I worked very hard preparing and practicing my audition. The audition process was lengthy and nerve-wracking, but patience and confidence got me through.

After observing all of the talent within this school, I knew that no matter how the show was cast, the end product would be phenomenal, but when I saw that I had been cast as “Belle” I squealed and cried and could not stop smiling for days. All of my hard work and determi-nation had finally paid off. I am so thrilled to get started with this production and to see how we will add our own unique flair to make this show truly memorable.

Amber Gathright – Belle

Coming off of my busy fall semester of acting, directing, and producing, I am much relieved and excited to only be acting in Beauty and the Beast. Very few of the Disney princes offer much to delve into for an actor, but one or two of them are quite the delightful chore. The Beast is one of those roles, and I feel an honor to “don the helm,” so to speak. There is a pressure I feel to bring something new to the character, create something new for the audi-ences to take home as their vision of the Beast. And here we go…

oach Charles Getty has been paid to put his body on the line in order to protect others for over half of his life. As a quarterback guard since high school, Getty has had a chance to protect many famous men.

Getty’s lifelong football calling began with his high school football excellence, which brought him many great opportunities. He got to attend Penn State University and play offensive tackle under the legendary coach Joe Paterno. While at Penn State, Getty played in the 1974 Orange Bowl, after which he was drafted in the second round by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Getty remained with the Chiefs for nine years and then finished out his professional career with the Green Bay Packers. After his retirement, Getty decided to bestow his football skills upon others by becoming a teacher and a coach.

Now, Getty is serving as the head offensive line coach for the EU Crusaders. Through his football career, whether playing or coaching, one thing Getty has learned is that God cares. “I have learned that God is in control. He cares about every athlete and every play. When a player broke his neck in a game in 2002, I was brokenhearted. When God healed him, I was amazed,” Getty said. I just never felt football was important enough for God to get involved. But the people that play football are important enough that Christ died for them. That means he cares about them and heals them.”

Now, Getty views the game differently—in a way that only God could show him. Football is no longer just a sport or a career to Getty; it’s an opportunity to share the gospel with those around him.

spring, which is a two-day event for future students, and a visit can be scheduled for

almost any time by calling 1-800-EVANGEL. We also offer overnight bed-and-breakfast

visits that can be scheduled for Fridays by calling 1-800-EVANGEL ext. 7432.

Not at all! The state-of the-art Mabee Center is free for students, and it has basketball

courts, racquetball courts, aerobics, an indoor track, free weights and cardio equipment.

Whether you want to do local ministry or foreign missions work, EU has something for

everyone. You can join one of our chapel worship teams, CROSSwalk—our

student ministry team, or go on one of the yearly mission trips. Also with hundreds of

local churches, getting involved is easy!

With EU’s low student/teacher ratio (15:1) and small class sizes, it’s easy to get to know

your professors. Some professors will even give you their home phone number and tell

you to call anytime. Some will even invite you over for supper!

Not to worry. All the sidewalk slabs around the clock tower have heated panels

beneath them.

All of the brick buildings you see on the Evangel campus have been built to replace old

barracks left from when the site was O’Reilly Army Hospital. Building 25 is the last

barrack remaining and it may not even be here by the time you arrive on campus. In the

early years, long corridors that connected these buildings served as battle grounds for a

fierce annual tradition of competitive mini-golf. We’re rather proud of our legacy for the

innovative utilization of otherwise underappreciated commodities.

Sadly, no. But if you wake up early enough, you’ll often find some neighborhood cats and

bunnies celebrating the morning together. As for the clause, well, the handbook makes

concessions for ‘small aquarium fish’, which is great news if your endeared fits

the designation.

MEETADAMGRUMKE

Adam Grumke had known about Evangel for a long time but never thought that his college search would lead him here.

Adam is interested in pre-med, so he had to work hard to stand out to get scholarships for a good undergraduate pre-med program. And stand out he did Adam made a 35 on his ACT and became a National Merit Finalist during his junior year of high school.

Adam’s academic excellence gained him offers from many universities, but his decision rested upon financial aid. After being contacted by Michael Crawford, prospective student coordintor, Adam sent in applications to EU for admission, financial aid and the Founders Scholarship. Though Evangel offers a large number of financial aid opportunities, only two full-tuition and ten half-tuition Founders Scholarships are offered each year. Adam became the grateful recipient of one of these prestigious awards.

Adam saw this great achievement as God opening a door for him, so he decided to join the EU family. “I am so glad that I came to Evangel. It has been so easy to get to know people here,” he said.

Adam’s hard work and sensitivity to God’s direction brought him what he considers a blessing in the form of financial aid.
