EvaluationQuestion 1Conventions in our movieScene 1

The first scene includes the protagonist making his way home which is cross-cutted by three characters returning drunk from a party and get into a car to drive home. We introduce the characters with a three shot which we pan during their walk. This is then followed with another shot of the three characters which are presented with a high shot. This continues with a shot of the protagonists feet and an introduction of his body hidden by the darkness. This challenges general media conventions as the protagonist is not introduced straight away like normally in movies. This cuts back to the characters inside the car already and as they turn on the radio our song from the soundtrack comes on to make it act as diegetic sound. We used tight framing inside of the car as we wanted to create a claustrophobic feel as if there wasnt much space inside, after this the protagonist re-appears and again surrounded by darkness so the audience cant recognise him yet, we see that he is crossing the road and isnt paying much attention until the non-diegetic sound of screeching tires followed by a reaction shot from the main character. This creates an enigma as the audience is left wondering what happens next when the title screen appears, although right after there is a wide shot which establishes the fate of the protagonist and shows that the impact did not go through.

Scene 2

This scene is straight off introduced with another song from the soundtrack which takes away from the panning long shot of the protagonist walking back home, the song makes is supposed to make the audience feel relaxed in a sense of calm before the storm. This is followed by a high shot of the protagonists feet and shadow stopping which is followed by a reaction shot which gives the feeling of shock. The next shot creates confusion as it is a medium shot of two characters walking into the house, the protagonist seeing that it is his brother and himself and this creates drama. These type of shots are normally used in thrillers and surreal movies as it keeps the audience confused and they want to know more about the situation. We aligned the next shot with the door handle so the audience see the door being shut after the characters enter which is followed by the final shot of the main characters face. The protagonist then follows the two characters into the house.Scene 3

As he walks through the door he realises he has appeared in the wrong part of the house and he looks up to see three dark figures standing in the living room which are cast in low-key lighting and introduced with a thunder strike which adds the sense of horror to the scene. As another reaction shot of the protagonist is shown the figures start to move forward trying to reach at the main character to which he makes a quick exit which is followed with an echoed voice which introduces the dream sequence and a high pitched noise to indicate the psycho side of the character early on.Scene 4

This scene begins with an introduction of heavy rock music playing through the headphones as the protagonist browses through YouTube comments. The teacher tries to get Peters attention and the cross-cutting of the ignoring student and teacher builds up tension as you can see the frustration in the teacher rise. As the teacher approaches he slams his hand onto the table to get Peters attention which also cuts out the music as if it was a powerful strike. The protagonist turns unimpressed in a close-up which is followed with the beginning of the argument which is filmed from Peters perspective in a POV style. The tension is as of a thrillers with the cut showing the main characters reaction to the shouting . This is concluded with a two shot of the protagonist exploding back into the teachers face and shouting back before he leaves. This is just the first stamp of the build up to the true conclusion of the movie and it shows wrath within the character.Scene 5

The second scene following the dream sequence begins with a blocking shot introducing two characters before the protagonist appears. The female character leaves her boyfriend and is further stalked by the protagonist who appears from around the corner and sees the couple with a canted shot. The music chosen for this is rather eerie and can mostly be found within thrillers which gives the main character a creepy but sad personality whilst the audience is beginning to find out who he really is. After a blocking shot which speeds up the tempo of the character we see him grabbing for the girls shoulder, once she turns and shouts at him we see a couple of cross-cuts which switch from both characters to show the emotions portrayed in this scene. This compared to the previous scene shows both lust and envy in the protagonist following the deadly sins.

Scene 6

In this scene the protagonist is wearing clothes which make him look really shady and showing that he could be up to trouble. We used a medium close-up tracking shot for this to have the expressions of the main character at all times in the beginning. The shot then arched into view of a drug dealer and a buyer. Following that the character goes to buy some drugs and the shot is panned from the three characters feet to their faces to reveal them and introduce dialogue. The protagonist asks for cocaine and as he sees the dealer handing it to the hooded man he reacts and takes the drugs out of his hand. As the dealer retrieves the drugs we see a reaction shot of the protagonist not looking happy. This then climaxes to aggressive behaviour as the character attacks the dealer. We use an extreme close up to fill the camera with just the two characters as Peter demands the drugs again. The non-diegetic music creates the feeling of danger and violence occurring showing the protagonists power, physical and mental. This shows character progression as after every shot we see a new side of Peter and it gets worse every time. We used blocking again during the shot where the protagonist leaves which is followed by a two shot of the two characters speaking about what just happened. The music sets the mood for the next scene and creates a darker shell around Peter. This shows off greed as he takes something that doesnt belong to him.Scene 7

The scene begins with the protagonist and his brother in a medium two shot where Peter pukes in an urban location. We used a low shot on the Bulmers bottle as the main character reaches down for it. This is followed by a shadow shot which shows the character go for another drink after his vomiting at which David attempts to stop him to which he reacts poorly and pushes his brother away as he begins to walk away. Continuing that we have a tracking shot of the main character walking away from David as he follows, this is a handheld shot which creates realism. Next we have a long shot which lasts for quite a bit, this is reassured by the non-diegetic sounds which again give the calm before the storm feeling and the atmosphere of the scene helps greatly. Continuing with another simple long shot we have the music coming to an end as the characters approach their target. The music takes a sweep down which shocks the audience as it signifies that this scene has already happened at the beginning of the movie which answers the mystery confusion at the beginning, this gives a thriller type of feel to the short film.Scene 8

This scene begins with the two characters entering and the camera pans with the protagonists movement to reveal a two shot of them conversing more about the situation in the previous scene. Followed by a short reaction shot of the main character which leads to a close-up of David. This turns to Peter snapping back at his brother to which we used a slow motion low shot to show David's anger with low key lighting and a heartbeat sound to show the building adrenaline, this signifies that something is about to happen. We return to the two shot as David points out all of Peters problems and then he is pushed to which it fades to black which is followed by a loud abrupt sound. The black cut becomes a reoccurring thing during this fight scene as it repeats itself whenever one of the characters attacks or reacts. We added that to quicken the pace of the movie making it more thrilling and blood pumping so the audience wonder who will come out on top. Once the protagonist hits his brother with a book the cuts end and it turns into a tracking shot which develops into a two shot showing the main character going for the final hit as he rests on David but not managing to convince himself to do so. We then use another tracking shot to show Peter exit with a mysterious and sinister whistle as the non-diegetic sound. This scene is the one that allows the audience to understand how insane Peter truly is and how emotionally torn apart he is to attack his own brother, you can also see how he changes through this scene from a drunk to a psychopath. During the exit You cant run away Peter echoes into the next scene.Scene 9

This shot begins panning up to show a forest to which the protagonist appears out of nowhere shocked. We involved a POV shot which includes some heavy breathing until it pans to reveal himself chasing him. This is very surreal and just like the previous scene rather blood pumping as it adds tempo to the scene. The main character begins to run away with another shot of his shoes to which we added an establishing shot that includes some voiceovers which echo through the extreme long shots of Peter running away. These are parts of dialogue taken from previous scenes which stuck with the character and come back to him as hes being chased away from life technically. The echoes act as the life flash before the eyes but in this instance it only includes the terrible things that the protagonist has done in his past. To split the long shots we used some reaction shots and eye line matches to extend the scene and make it more action pact and to reassure the audience that he is still being chased. This leads to a short tracking shot then into another feet shot before the character falls over, the screen cuts three times in the POV perspective to view the villain in three different shots from a low angle to a worms eye. After all of that he was the danger and life caught up to him. As the dream sequence ends the voice of Peter states Youre dreaming Peter, wake up.Scene 10

The final scene opens up where the first scene should have originally ended as the audience see the car again and this time a body on the ground in front of it as the movie transitions back into reality. This being the final puzzle to the narrative allows the audience to finally understand what is happening as the story becomes clearer. The car lights turn off and the three characters rush out to see if the protagonist is okay after being hit. We used tight framing in the dark environment to crowd the characters around the victim to which we zoom out from his dead body and introduce the final song from the soundtrack which is followed by the credits.

Overall during the production of our movie we have challenged real media conventions to make the film ours as well as using certain techniques to make the movie stand out and feel more professional. This also includes completing carrying out the narrative effectively so the target audience understand it and are engaged.
