HOW DOES YOUR FILM OPENING REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

Evaluation Question 2

Harry Helyar

How does your film opening represent particular social groups?

• Our film opening represents many social groups throughout its course. We represent political figures as shady characters throughout. This is through the black costume which connotes anonymity, and considering we never get a long look at his face, it makes him look quite shady. He is looking through records for a person called Aaron Allen. Aaron Allen is a hooded figure, this gives negative stereotypes about him, as hoodies are generally represented negatively throughout media. Allen is also seen as someone trying to be anonymous – we can see he is intruding somewhere, this goes to show he is somewhere he isn’t supposed to be, this again gives the idea he isn’t a positive figure. From our film opening no one is represented as being particularly “good”, instead we get the idea that all of the characters are up to something, both are shady, leaving the audience to wonder what the connection is between them. This is quite conventional of thriller genres. At very few times do we know what is going on in a thriller, it normally takes a while to learn it. We have taken this into account in our opening, the audience know little at this point in time.
