‘How did you attract/address your target audience?’

Page 2: Evaluation Question: 02

FRONT COVER – ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE1. The use of a masthead in the top left corner of

the page makes it easy for the reader to recognise the magazines corporate identity, as will as making it easy to see when stacked on shelves

2. By placing my masthead in the top left corner of the page, the main headline in the centre, and the smaller headlines on the edges, I am able to guide my audience to see the masthead first, and then the main headline, which will draw the readers attention

3. The use of a banner for my main headline will draw attention to my main headline, and therefore make the reader interested in the main article of my magazine

4. I have used this image as my main image as it is bright and therefore captures the readers attention. It is also a rather interesting image which will keep the readers interest after first seeing it

5. The use of smaller headlines with band names included in them suggests a large amount of content, and therefore will attract the reader to purchase the magazine as it appears to have a reasonable amount of content

2) Use of ‘Z-Band’

1) Masthead in top left corner of page

3) Use of banner for main headline

4) Use of image

5) Use of smaller headlines

FRONT COVER – ADDRESSING MY TARGET AUDIENCE1. The main image used in this magazine

uses an indirect mode of address. Although it is an unconventional mode of address, I have used this style because I feel it relates to my target audience more. The target audience for this magazine is rather maid back, so I have decided to use an image which makes the artist seem relaxed and uninterested. This will allow my target audience to relate to the artist displayed on the cover of my magazine as it will show him as similar to themselves

2. The use of language on the cover of my magazine is informal to suite my audience. I have used an informal use of language as it will be easier for my target audience to read and enjoy, rather than using a formal use of language which would make the magazine seem too serious. The language used is direct as well as it makes the audience feel like they are interacting with the magazine, rather than just reading blocks of information on the bands displayed inside

CONTENTS PAGE – ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE1. The use of my masthead in the title of the

contents page allows the reader to see a level of consistency from the front cover to the contents page

2. The use of a ‘Grid Structure’ makes it easy for the reader to navigate around the page, therefore allowing them to decide which articles they want to read

3. The use of images of the artists included keeps a level of visual interest to the contents page, which will keep the readers attention while they read the contents

4. The use of the information beneath the titles ‘Bands this week’ and ‘News Reel’ allows the reader to see how much content is in the magazine, and therefore see that the magazine will give them a large amount of information on the genre they enjoy

5. The use of quotes will give the readers a level of interest about the artists saying them, and make them want to read the related article

2) Use of ‘Grid Structure’

1) Masthead used in title

3) Use of images of the artists

4) Use of contents teasing

5) Use of quotes

CONTENTS PAGE – ADDRESSING MY TARGET AUDIENCE1. The images used in the contents

page use a direct mode of address. I have decide to use this mode of address rather than continuing to use an indirect mode of address for my images because a direct mode of address allows the audience to relate more easily with the artists, and the images are similar to the one used in the front cover as the artists seem rather laid back and relaxed. This again is easy for my target audience to relate to

2. The use of language on this page is again informal and direct. I have continued this style of language as it keeps the reader interested in the magazine and allows them to fell as if they are interacting with the magazine

2) Use of language

1) Image uses direct mode of address

ARTICLE – ATTRACTING MY TARGET AUDIENCE1. The use of a main image as a

background will gain the readers interest quickly, and allow them to see who the article is about. This will keep their attention

2. The use of ‘Pull Quotes’ allows the reader to quickly see interesting parts of the article without having to read the whole text. This will gain the readers attention and make them want to read the whole article

3. The us e of a banner for the main headline will make the title stand out and grab the readers attention. This will quickly display the reader who the article is about and allow them to read on

4. The use of the ‘Z-Band’ theory will make my audience see the members of the band first, followed by the name of the band, and finally a dropped cap to start the article. This will show the reader everything about the band before they start reading the magazine article, which will keep them interested as they will then know how the band are while reading the article

2) Use of ‘Pull Quotes’

1) Use of main image

3) Use of banner for main headline

4) Use of ‘Z-Band’

ARTICLE – ADDRESSING MY TARGET AUDIENCE1. I decided to use a direct mode of

address for my main image. I decided to use this type of address as it will make it easier for my audience to relate to the artist before reading more about them. I decided against using an image with an indirect mode of address as it wouldn’t give the reader the same feeling of relation to the artist, and they would therefore be likely to lose interest in the article as a result

2. The use of language is a continuation of the use of language from my other two pages (direct, informal language). This allows the audience to not only feel as if they are interacting with the magazine, but also make it easier for them to relate to the artist. This I because, as a result of having a direct use of language which allows the reader to interact with the magazine, the reader therefore feels as if they are interacting with the artist, and therefore more fully relate to the artist

2) Use of language

1) Images uses direct mode of address
