As a starting point within our research, we looked at the company IPC Media. I carried out an in-depth research into this company and looked at the types of magazine they produce, specifically focusing on the music aspect.

IPC media publish 75 different types of magazine, and two of these are music based. NME and UNCUT are the two music magazines produced by IPC media, and they are both based on the music genre rock/heavy-metal. This therefore means that as a company they have a target niche established already for their music magazines, and the target niche is not one of my media product.

IPC have a gap in their market for a indie-pop music magazine and I feel that by publishing my product with them, I would gain a new different audience group.

This would not only be a benefit for my media product but also for the company themselves, who would gain a larger target audience. However other companies such as Bauer who produce a wider array of music magazines will have a greater number of my specific target audience already established, and although my media product will compete against ones that are a similar genre, I would be able to reach a greater audience more quickly.

Baeur is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations; Bauer Media spans over 80 influential brand names covering a diverse range of interests including 4 music which suits the genre of my music magazine. As well as this Baeur reach over nineteen million UK adults every week, which therefore establishes a new target niche in the company and this would mean my magazine would easily reach out to the audience without no competition.

By using IPC Media to publish my music magazine, I will reach a new audience for the company but considering that IPC already have such a strong target audience for their rock music magazines, I will struggle to reach a new audience. This is why I believe a company like Bauer will result in a better outcome for my media product, although there'd be a competition against other top-selling music magazines I believe that indie-pop is not a genre that has been widely covered throughout their magazines and this is why I would choose this company to go with for the distribution of my music magazine.
