Q3-( With a short video at the end )

Page 2: Evaluation number 3

I have been researching into many different media institutions that might distribute my music magazine product. These are the ones and the research I carried out on each:

• Paul Cheal, publishing director at NME, said the brand remains the iconic music brand.Overall I decided that this was not the media institution that would distribute my music magazine.

IPC Media

• They produce iconic media brands and there websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month.

• I decided to research into what magazines they were associated with and found the popular music magazine NME to be one of them. This is a similar music magazine to mine in the fact the bands featured can overlap into the rock genre.

• HOWEVER whilst browsing I found an article saying IPC’s weekly NME recorded a circulation of 38,486 – down 20.6% year on year and a fall of 6% over the period. However it is said that the ‘IPC reaffirmed its commitment’ to the magazine and pointed to its various brand extensions –including NME Radio and NME TV –claiming the NME brand has a reach of more than one million.

• Next I found an institution called ‘Menzies distribution’.

•They are a leading provider of ‘added value’ distribution and marketing services to the newspaper and magazine supply chain in the UK. They distribute 4 .5 million newspapers (6 million on Sundays) and 2.5 million magazines (covering over 3,000 magazine titles) each day, with deliveries to more than 21,500 customers.

•However I do not feel my magazine would perhaps fit into their institution due to their typical magazines.

• Another one I have found out about its Smiths News-

•Smiths News distributes newspapers and magazines on behalf of all the major national publishers as well as a large number of regional publishers. The business serves approximately 30,000 customers across England and Wales.

• I went on to discover others such as ‘Worldwide magazine distribution’ . I found out that over the past 12 months WWMD have despatched over 9,000,000 magazines.

• They are located close to important motorway networks, Birmingham International Airport, and railway stations. This will ensure quick and effective distribution of magazines and

therefore my magazine.

•They distribute magazines such as ‘Kerrang’ , ‘Uncut’ , ‘NME’ and ‘Q’. These magazines are all very similar to mine whether it be through genre or style and target groups. Therefore this

could be a very good option as my music magazine would fit in nicely and keep to their typical styles overall.

I would like my magazine to be sold at the popular and diverse shop – ‘WH smiths’. I think it would fit in with similar music magazines that already sold there such as Kerrang. However also it could stand out due to the contrasting and various colour used. This is due to perhaps it challenging stereotypes surrounding a typical rock music magazine.

HERE is a little video with sound that I created, just to act as a reminder to what my magazine looks like and so how is will visually fit in with this shop.
