Dear Colleagues and Friends,
We are now just ten months away from the EuroSpeleo Forum (ESF), Europe’s premier speleological event, which will be held in Ebensee, Austria, on 23rd-26th August 2018. An estimated 700 people from nearly 30 countries are expected to attend to share the results of their latest exploration, research, and techniques.
Early bird registration on our website has already started and will be open until the end of May. In addi-tion, we want to encourage all participants to submit an oral or poster contribution for one of the confer-ence symposia.
We are excited and look forward to greeting all those who have already registered or are planing to do so. We hope the important information contained in this 2nd Circular, together with that on our website, will be of great benefit in planning your visit to the Salzkam-mergut and answering any questions you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact us if some informa-tion is missing or you have additional questions.
We are sure that it will be a unforgettable experience during your visit in Austria, and we hope to see you all there.

Es trennen uns nur mehr 10 Monate vom EuroSpeleo Forum (ESF), Europas wichtigstes höhlenkundliches Veranstaltungsformat, das von 23.-26. August 2018 in Ebensee, Österreich, stattfindet. An dem Kongress werden rund 700 Höhlenforscher aus insgesamt 30 Ländern erwartet.
Die Frühbucher-Registrierung auf unserer Tagungs-webseite ist bereits freigeschaltet und ermöglicht bis Ende Mai eine Anmeldung zu vergünstigten Kondi-tionen. Zusätzlich wollen wir alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer einladen, mit einem Vortrag oder einem Poster an einem der geplanten Symposien mit-zuwirken.
Wir sehen dieser internationalen Veranstaltung mit Freunde entgegen und hoffen, dass die im 2. Zirkular gebotenen Informationen alle Interessierten dabei un-terstützen, ihren Besuch im Salzkammergut so gut als möglich zu planen. Ebensee—a town of 8000 inhabitants—is not only known for its culture and natural beauty, but also
for the high number of caves (about 200) in the sur-roundings. The “Schönberg-Höhlensystem“ (with over 140 km total length the longest cave system in the EU), the “Schwarzmooskogel-Höhlensystem” (over 122 km) or the “Hirlatzhöhle“ (over 100 km) are also close by.The town has a very good highway and railway con-nection and represents an ideal starting point for un-derground and “surface” excursions to mountains and caves of the district Salzkammergut, for example to the four managed show caves and the world heritage site Dachstein near the old salt town Hallstatt.
AccessThe venue offers good transport links by road, bus and train. The railway station “Ebensee Landungsplatz“ and the bus stop “Ebensee Hotel Post” are situated in front of the town hall. Road access on the national street “B145” from the highway “A1” connecting Munich, Salzburg and Vi-enna, 30 minutes drive from the highway exit “Regau”. Railway access every hour between 7:00 a.m. and 9 p.m. from Attnang-Puchheim or Stainach-Irdning (rail access to the high speed connection between Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna) to the station “Eben-see Landungsplatz”. International airports are situated in Salzburg, Linz, Munich (Germany), and Vienna (all airports are linked to public transport).
Ebensee, eine Marktgemeinde mit 8000 Einwoh-nern, ist nicht nur bekannt für seine reiche Volks-
kultur und schöne Lage am Südufer des Traunsees, sondern auch für die große Höhlendichte. Alleine 200 Höhlen befinden sich auf dem Gemeindegebiet, dar-unter auch das Schönberg-Höhlensystem – mit über 140 km Ganglänge die längste Höhle der Europäi-schen Union. Der Ort ist bequem mittels Auto oder Bahn zu errei-chen und bietet sich daher als idealer Stützpunkt für ober- und unterirdische Aktivitäten aller Art an: von einfachen Wanderungen am Seeufer, dem Besuch ei-ner der vier Schauhöhlen des Salzkammerguts bis zu anspruchsvollen Bergtouren am Dachsteingebirge.
AnreiseEbensee ist durch die Salzkammergut-Bundesstraße B145 (Autobahn Salzburg-Wien, Abfahrt Regau) bequem erreichbar. Von der B145 die Abfahrt ins Ortszentrum wählen und dieser ca. 200 m folgen.Öffentlich anzureisen ist dank der Salzkammergut-Bahn (Betriebszeiten stündlich von 7:00 bis 21:00), die mit den Bahnhöfen Attnang-Puchheim und Stai-nach-Irdning an das Fernverkehrsnetz angeschlossen ist, ebenso problemlos möglich. Der Rathaussaal mit dem Tagungsbüro liegt 5 Minuten zu Fuß von der Bahnhaltestelle „Ebensee Landungsplatz“ sowie von der Bushaltestelle „Ebensee Hotel Post“ entfernt und befindet sich im Ortszentrum. Die nächsten internationalen Flughäfen befinden sich in Salzburg, Linz, München (Deutschland) und Wien.

and in a further complex with an auditorium, a school, and a cinema, which is situated in a distance of 800 m.
The congress programme consists of scientific sympo-sia, expos, business meetings, different competitions, excursions & field camps.

Oral presentations (15 min lecture, 5 min discussion) and posters are welcome. Symposium language is English. Presentations in German are accepted when headings and captions in the slides are in English. Participants are invited to submit abstracts (max. 250 words) or extended abstracts (max. 4 pages in length)of their contributions by the end of January, 2018.
Since the abstracts will be collected in a printed publication, authors are requested to carefully follow the instructions of the following templates: www.eurospeleo.at/symposia.html
All abstract applications should be sent by email to [email protected]. Please indicate if you prefer an oral or poster presentation.
Submissions undergo a reviewing process. The sci-entific committee reserves the right to request revi-sion of the abstract and to decide upon acceptance as oral presentation or as poster. For the participants of the EuroSpeleo Protection Symposium, the review-ing process lays in the responsibility of the European Cave Protection Commission.

There will be a photo competition during EuroSpe-leo Forum 2018. Further information about the
participation will be published later.
All photos, which are cave-related (creative, docu-mentary, humour, etc.), are allowed. A participation at the conference is mandatory. The pictures must be a JPG file with min. 2500 pixel on the longest side of the photo. The copyright remains with the photographer and the photos will be shown at the exhibition at the EuroSpeleo Forum.
The photographer will not be named during the ex-hibition, to focus the audience only on the photo as a basis for evaluation. The evaluation of the photos will be done by audience voting. The photographer agrees that his/her pictures might be printed and presented online for the purpose of a report of EuroSpeleo Fo-rum 2018. The three best photos win an award and prizes.

Im Rahmen des EuroSpeleo Forums 2018 wird ein Fotowettbewerb zum Thema „Höhlenfotografie“
ausgeschrieben. Detaillierte Informationen zur Aus-schreibung folgen.
Hierzu zählen alle Fotografien die sich mit dem Thema Höhle kreativ oder dokumentarisch auseinanderset-zen. Eine Teilnahme an der Tagung ist Voraussetzung. Die Einsendungen müssen mindestens 2500 Pixel auf der längsten Bildseite haben und im Format .jpg abge-liefert werden. Das Verwertungsrecht verbleibt voll-kommen beim Fotografen und die Fotos werden im Rahmen der Wettbewerbsausstellung gezeigt.
Der Fotograf wird bei der Ausstellung nicht genannt, um den Fokus für die Bewertung auf das Bild zu legen. Die Bewertung erfolgt mittels Publikumsvoting mit Stimmzetteln. Der Fotograf willigt mit Teilnahme am Wettbewerb ein, dass die eingereichten Fotos im Rah-men der Berichterstattung über die Tagung sowohl im Druck als auch online veröffentlicht werden. Die drei erstplatzierten Gewinner erhalten Sachpreise.

Your films will be shown during two afternoons ac-cording to the program. The EuroSpeleo Image’In
Film Festival will take place in: Cinema Ebensee (House of Music and Films), Schulgasse 6, 4802 Eben-see: http://www.kino-ebensee.at
To take part please provide the film as a MP4 file and send a link (e.g. dropbox) to: [email protected].
The films will be categorised if necessary, depending on the number of submissions. We will inform you in which category your film will be shown. We will not change the content of your film!
To give a forum to as many artists as possible please make sure that your film is not longer than 12 min. Every participant is allowed to submit only one mov-ie. The authors of the three top-ranked films win an award and prizes.

Call for Candidates for Speleo-Olympics Competition
Die Speleo-Olympics werden in einer öffentlichen Parkanlage ausgetragen. Die Teilnehmer haben
ihre Fertigkeit beim Aufsteigen, Abseilen und Schlie-fen unter Beweis zu stellen. Für die Aufgaben werden beispielsweise örtliche Gegebenheiten wie Stiegen, Bäume, Mauern genutzt, aber auch künstliche Hin-dernisse wie Schlufpassagen eingesetzt.
Die Sicherheit steht an oberster Stelle. Jeder Teilneh-mer ist für seine eigene Sicherheit während des Wett-kampfes verantwortlich. Werden die Sicherheitsregeln missachtet, hat das die Disqualifikation zur Folge.
Beim Wettkampf ist die Höhlenforscherausrüstung, d.h. Schlaz, Helm, Handschuhe und technische Aus-rüstung, die zum Aufsteigen, Abseilen usw. benötigt wird, zu tragen. Die jeweils drei Erstplatzierten (Män-ner, Frauen) werden mit einem Preis ausgezeichnet.
Nähere Informationen zur Anmeldung werden im 3. Zirkular veröffentlicht.
Speleo-Olympics will be held in a public park next to the conference centre. The competitors have to
demonstrate their skills in climbing, abseiling, craw-ling etc. For the challenge, stairs, trees or walls as well as artificial obstacles like simulated narrow passages will be used.
Savety is always first. Every competitor is responsible for his own safety during the challenge. Disobeying savety rules cause immediate disqualification.
For the competition, all paticipants have to wear re-gular caving equipment, like caving oversuit, helmet, gloves and SRT-equipment. The first three male and female winners will receive an award.
Further information will be published in our 3rd Cir-cular.

Cavers in Austria invite you to join a variety of field trips and precamps:
What: Most trips are located within the Salzkam-mergut area. Some points of interest are nearby Salz-burg and we visit the Nationalpark Kalkalpen and the Waldviertel.You can experience the caves in Dachstein, Höllenge-birge, Totes Gebirge, Salzkammergutberge, Taugl, Untersberg and Waldviertel. Last but not least we cross lakes, visit museums, search for salt and look through geological windows.
When: We organise one-day field trips on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. For longer tours we are planning a few precamps. Tours of two or three days are scheduled from Friday, 17th Aug. to Wednesday, 22nd Aug., the week before the conference. On Saturday, 25th we only offer short-excursions and encourage you to take a break from caving and join the sessions at the conference. Ebensee is also a good starting point for your per-sonal hike. The train stops in Ebensee and takes you to towns next to the Salzkammergut lakes: Gmunden, Traunkirchen, Bad Ischl, Bad Aussee and Obertraun at the south end of the Hallstättersee are some of them.
How: All trips are rated in terms of the experience and gear needed ranging from 1 to 3. 1 is easy. For tours rated 1, you don’t need a caving overall and a torch is sufficient. 2 is sportive and in most cases you will need an overall and a helmet with headlamp. Some tours also require gear for ascending and descending on a single rope. 3 is for experienced cavers, who are very familiar with ascending and descending on a single rope. Complete caving equipment is needed for these demanding tours.
We are planning field trips in all of these three catego-ries on each day during the congress.

Was: Der Großteil der Exkursionen findet im Salz-kammergut statt, doch einige Ziele liegen bei Salzburg. Weiters besuchen wir den Nationalpark Kalkalpen und das Waldviertel. Du kannst Höhlen im Dachstein, Höllengebirge, im Toten Gebirge, den Salzkammer-gutbergen, der Taugl, dem Untersberg und im Granit des Waldviertels besuchen. Zudem überqueren wir Seen, suchen nach dem weißen Gold, besuchen Mu-seen und schauen durch geologische Fenster.
Wann: Für Donnerstag, Freitag und Sonntag werden Tagesexkursionen organisiert. Längere Touren finden im Rahmen von „Precamps” statt. Diese mehrtägigen Touren, die zwei oder drei Tage lang dauern können, finden in der Woche vor der Tagung (17.-22.8.) statt.Am Samstag, den 25.8., finden nur Kurz-Exkursionen statt und wir empfehlen, die Tagung mit ihren Vorträ-gen und Ausstellungen zu besuchen. Ebensee ist außerdem ein ausgezeichneter Ausgang-spunkt für Wander- und Bergtouren. Mit dem Zug er-reicht man von Ebensee aus Gmunden, Traunkirchen, Bad Ischl, Bad Aussee, und Obertraun – alles beliebte Urlaubs-ziele in der Seenregion Salzkammergut.
Wie: Alle Ausflüge sind nach Schwierigkeitsgrad bzw. Ausrüstungsbedarf in die Kategorien 1 bis 3 eingeteilt.1 ist einfach. Touren, die mit einer 1 bewertet sind, brauchst du keinen Schlufanzug. Eine einfache Taschenlampe ist ausreichend.2 ist sportlich und in den meisten Fällen brauchst du einen Schlufanzug und einen Helm mit Lampe.3 ist für erfahrene Höhlenforscher gedacht, die rou-tiniert in Einseiltechnik sind. Es handelt sich um be-sonders fordernde Touren hinsichtlich Technik und Kondition.
Es ist geplant, dass Exkursionen zu allen drei Katego-rien an jedem Tag des Kongresses stattfinden.

Künstliche Objekte: Prähistorischer Salzabbau in den Stollen Hallstatts, Kohleabbau in Timelkam, Ebenseer Stollen aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, ein Museum für Naturgeschichte und Schleifsteinbrüche warten auf deinen Besuch.
Wanderungen: Tauglboden und Lengfeldkeller, Langbathsee, Hirschlucke, Feuerkogel, Traunsee-Ost-ufer mit seinen Höhlen, Hirschbrunn, Karstquellen in Abtenau und Scheffau und weitere.

1st: The word “See” means lake. There is no sea in Aus-tria. We are sorry for that.
2nd: “Berg” means mountain, but don’t be confused. “Gebirge” basically also means mountain and “Stein” often refers to a mountain as well.
3rd: We use “Höhle” to say cave. Some people want to disguise their cave as “Loch”, “Schlund” or “Lucke”, but you will be clever and know it’s just a cave.
