Task force on Hierarchical Objects: Motivation

Important topic for Europeana Network

Implementation of solutions delayed • Required functionalities not available in the flat ESE model

EDM: new possibilities to represent such complex data

Real need for examples showing best practices

Task force launched in June 2012 at the Europeana Plenary

Wiki: http://pro.europeana.eu/web/network/europeana-tech/- /wiki/Main/Taskforce+on+hierarchical+objects

Final deliverable: January 2013

Main activities | 1

Identify different cases where hierarchies are involved

Eight case studies collected from different domains:• Hierarchical description of objects from libraries

• Hierarchical representation of event-related documents

• Hierarchical objects in audiovisual archives

• Hierarchical objects in the context of the Hope project

• Hierarchies for archeological objects

• Europeana 1914–1918

• The Montiano family archive

• Israeli artist biographies

Inventory of display solutions

What happened in the meeting yesterday…

Discussion of first draft of the final report

Analysis of different case studies• Hierarchical representation of event-related documents

• Hierarchical objects in audiovisual archives

• Hierarchical description of objects from libraries

• Hierarchies for archaeological objects

Discussion of keys issues• Question of granularity: what to include in hierarchies?

• Modelling of hierarchies in contextual resources?

• How to sequence parts in hierarchies?

• How to represent missing parts?

Task force will run for two more months

First draft version of report in December 2012

Task Force EDM FRBRoo (EFAP TF)

Intention: analyse how to map existing data formats into an EDM model extended by FRBRoo

Kick-off July 16, 2012

Wiki: http://pro.europeana.eu/web/network/europeana-tech/- /wiki/Main/Task+Force+EDM+FRBRoo

Page 24: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

@maxkaiser

EFAP Task Force: Goals

Start from mapping provided by CIDOC

Deliverable:• Combined model of properties and classes including sample data

• Modeling principles and mapping rules

Results will be of use for everyone who wants to model derivative relations in EDM

EFAP Task Force: Current status

3 virtual meetings: documented in the Wiki

Selection of mapping examples• Don Quixote

• Hamlet

• Musical example

• Example from a Swiss Poster collection

Smaller groups work on the examples “offline”

Last virtual meeting (Nov 15): share and discuss first mapping exercises – available on the Wiki: http://pro.europeana.eu/web/network/europeana-tech/- /wiki/Main/Prep+Call+Nov+15

Page 27: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

@maxkaiser

Status after meeting yesterday

Decisions: • Distinguish modelling for integration, querying & representation

• Use FRBR distinction “expression” vs. “work” only if needed

• Produce clear rules for use of this distinction

Use FRBRoo specialisations to optimise mappings where needed• Identify minimal set of FRBRoo extensions which are required to

represent the level of detail found in the data

Derive mapping rules from these example mappings• until Christmas 2012

• input for virtual meeting on January 9, 2013

Finish by February (deliverable)

Persistent Identifiers Task Force

Goal: investigate if Europeana should play a role in the implementation of PIDs for its Data Providers beyond promoting their use

Examining what that role could be

Chair: Jan Molendijk (Europeana Foundation)

12 Task Force Members

Physical meeting in June at the Europeana Plenary

Process so far: • Question paper sent out

• Discussions followed on list• Reference to current practices returned (e.g. HOPE)

Page 29: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

@maxkaiser

PI Task Force: Next Steps

Jan Molendijk will combine input into draft position paper

Will be sent to list(s) for comments, then finalized by End January 2013

EuropeanaTech and the three main Europeana Priorities for 2013

1. Europeana is an Ecosystem2. Europeana is a Core Service Platform3. The Value of Opening Up

Page 31: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

@maxkaiser

1. Europeana is an Ecosystem

Shared vision: improve access to our shared cultural heritage

Europeana Network as a shared, distributed eco-system: more than the sum of its parts

EuropeanaTech Community: essential component of the ecosystem

Contributions by EuropeanaTech Network in 2013:• Contribute to Commons thinking• Improve sense of mutuality between Europeana Foundation and

Network – Example: EuropeanaTech Task Forces

• Improve Knowledge Sharing – Example: FLOSS Inventory, Europeana Professional

Page 32: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

@maxkaiser

Europeana is a catalyst for innovation for the Cultural Heritage Sector & the Creative Industries

Focus on provision of tools & infrastructure for others to build services

Contributions by EuropeanaTech Network in 2013:• Contribute to Open Culture Lab / Living Labs network

( Europeana Creative)

• Connect to conferences / events in tech sector• Contribute to interoperability: EDM and LOD work

Page 33: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

@maxkaiser

3. The Value of Opening Up

How can we best demonstrate the value of opening up?

Contributions by EuropeanaTech Network in 2013• Contributions to LOD• Contribute to applications for UGC• Work on user interaction models

Page 34: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

How can you contribute?

Page 35: Europeana v2.0 WP 7 & EuropeanaTech

@maxkaiser

How to contribute?

Several levels: organization, advice, code, data… Mailing list, Twitter… React to our deliverables Contribute prototypes & demos in ThoughtLab /

Open Culture Lab Contribute documented EDM metadata and

mappings for next steps of EDM Participate in our upcoming meetings!

How about a joint technical meeting in 2013?
