The political vision

‘Digitisation and online accessibility of cultural material are essential to highlight cultural and scientific heritage, to inspire the creation of new content and to encourage new online services to emerge. They help to democratise access to culture and knowledge and to develop the information society and the knowledge-based economy.’

Spain is also an early adopter of open data standards. Hispana, with the Spanish Ministry of Culture, has provided its content under the Linked Open Data standards and by doing so has contributed to the Linked Open Data Pilot that Europeana is promoting. Almost 10% of Spanish material in Europeana is shown with the internationally accredited Public Domain mark, which gives a clear indication to users that they can use the digital material as they wish, incorporating it into educational resources and cultural tourism packages, for example. It would be good to keep up with this figure and increase it, as this widens audience engagement with Spanish cultural heritage material, and also opens it up to creative enterprise and new commercial applications.
