Throughout its 1,200 years of history, the Camino de Santiago has played a leading role in the creation of a common European identity, regardless of nationalities or political and religious disputes. Phenomena such as the expansion of the Romanesque or Gothic or the expansion of urbanization or the concept of citizenship, are closely linked to the moments of splendor of this route of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. After a few centuries of decline, in the middle of the twentieth century, coinciding with the beginning of the process of European construction, the Way of St. James emerged again as a route that combines religious, spiritual, cultural and dialogue values between people from very different geographical, mentality and social extraction. At present, there are more than 80,000 kilometers of routes marked as Jacobean on the continent, existing in almost all European countries stretches of this route.

In order to highlight its integrative nature, the European Federation of the Ways of Santiago promotes the celebration of the first European Days of the Camino de Santiago, during the weekend of October 19 and 20th 2019. Different activities carried out in seven countries will allow the citizens to understand the European component of the Jacobean route and the multiple ties that it have contribute to build between the different peoples of the continent.

The baroque church building with its fresco paintings, which are unique in the Netherlands, is a national monument and belongs to the ‘Top 100 of the National Service for the Preservation of Monuments’ from 1990.

It is also possible to visit the refugio and have a chat with people who have walked or cycled the Camino.

At 19 th. of October the bishop will be present all day. During this day the Basilica can be visitied and at 19.00 hrs there is a light procession in which the pelgrims can take part.

Former Benedictine abbey founded in the 8th century. The former abbey church is now St. Amelberga’s Basilica. The abbey church, one of the major examples of Romanesque architecture in the Netherlands, was built in the 11th century. It was clearly influenced by the Ottonian minster church of Essen Abbey. It was dedicated to Amelberga in 1886, after authentication of the relics kept here.

O Caminho Português de Santiago passa por Tomar.

The Portuguese Way of Santiago passes through Tomar. This route has recognized cultural and tourist interest. The Convent of Christ gathered and supported the pilgrims, being a crossing point, previously only directed to Santiago de Compostela and nowadays also to Fatima.

Visit to the Chapel, which houses an old Standard dating from 1622 which was on the Camino de Santiago from the old town. Chapel already existed in 1755, on the High Altar stood and stands a granite cruise where are carved the images of Christ and Santiago, which claim to have been pattern raised by pilgrims goint to Compostela. The northern road of the Camino de Santiago began to consolidate as a pilgrimage route during the XII-XIII centuries under the foundation, by the Castilian monarchs, of a network of new villages as well as the proliferation of pilgrimages by sea and the navigation of cabotage. In this context, Gijón played a fundamental role as a refuge port for European pilgrims who decided to make a part of the road by boat and stopped in Gijón to visit the Relics guarded in the Holy Ark of San Salvador of Oviedo.

The pilgrimage routes also served to disseminate ideas, artistic fashions and architectural styles of European influence as happened with the Romanesque architecture that followed the axis of the Camino de Santiago. An example of great attraction in Gijón is the case of the Church of San Salvador de Deva. Although the image that we have today of this temple corresponds to a restoration of 1941, it retains, among other remains, the original consecration tombstone of the church that informs us that it was Queen Velasquita, wife of Bermudo II who ordered the construction of this temple at the end of the 10th century and it seems that it originally served to accommodate the pilgrims of the Northern Way of the Camino. Also in the immediate vicinity of this church is the source of the Güeyu de Deva. This type of elements, the fountains, were essential for the pilgrims

Within the framework of pilgrimage routes to both Santiago and Oviedo, is the coastal path or Camino de la Costa. The exceptional richness of the reliquary and the oral propagation of the miracles and legends of the Savior introduced Asturias on the Northern Way to Santiago de Compostela at the end of the 11th century.

The northern road, away from the massification that the French road currently lives, remains as an experience in solitude and in fusion with a wild and fruitful nature of colorful landscapes.

We propose a walk along a section of this coast road, from the top of the Curviellu to the old pilgrim hospital of Gijon / Xixón in Cimavilla.

At the beginning of the tour, plastic collection and cleaning bags will be provided in order to turn the walk into a “Plogging” action, a new way of doing physical exercise combined with the collection of plastic waste.

Among the unique elements that characterize the Jacobean roads we have the hospital institutions that begin to proliferate from the 14th century and that will give assistance to the pilgrims until the 19th century. From this time it is considered the pilgrim hospital of Gijón located in the building that today houses the Zabala Restaurant in Cimavilla. Jovellanos, in a letter addressed to González Posada in 1804, comments that in his childhood this hostel was known as the “corraxos” hospital, a name given to pilgrims and upstarts in Gijón. Pilgrims did not leave without receiving any alms distributed by the City Council among those in need.

The Compostela Group of Universities is devoted to involve all the members of the university community in promoting the values of cooperation and integration in Higher Education. To this end, it has developed a series of initiatives and activities aimed at promoting the formation and dissemination of these values, carried by the Camino all across the European continent.

One of the proposed activities under the funding programme “O Teu Xacobeo” links to the university knowledge about the St. James’ Way and it will consist in a fully one-week event to be held from 18th to 25th October 2019 with the support of the University of Santiago de Compostela.

“Road to the Inland Island” is a seminar on coaching, self-knowledge and internal growth organized in San Simón Island on October 18, 19 and 20. Co-financed with the support of the Xunta de Galicia, this experience reflects the centenary spirit of the Saint James’ Way as a tool for personal introspection, communion with nature and as a common framework to understand the deep roots that link human beings in their eagerness to transcend through silence the way leading to themselves.
