Dear Readers,
I may be a little late in wishing you all a “Happy New Year”, but as the old saying goes “better late than never”. Have you ever wondered when was the first “New Year’s Day” celebration? I did some re-search with my new tablet and the following is what I found: In 45 B.C. New Year’s Day is celebrated on January 1st for the first time in history as the Julian calendar takes effect. Soon after becoming Roman dictator Julius Caesar decided that the traditional Roman calendar was in dire need of reform. He then sought advice from Astronomer Sosigenes where a sweeping reform was ordered. Sosigenes introduced the Egyptian solar calendar, taking the length of the solar year as 365-1/4 days. Resulting in what we have every 4 years as leap year! Did you know that the first celebration in Time Square was in 1904 when the New York Times made their move from the Financial District up to 42nd Street (and got the area dubbed “Times Square” in their honor,) Back in 1904 there was not a ball drop. In 1907 New’s Year Eve Ball made its maiden descent from the flag pole atop One Times Square. That was their idea for a big celebration! Well there you have it, my version any-way. More can be found on your computer. Enjoy the year with good health and a smile.
Mary Ann Giannelli (P.S. Happy Valentine’s Day!)

MUNICIPAL AGENT NOTES By John Sullivan
NON-ADDICTIVE PAIN RELIEVERS
The National Safety Councils latest statistics show that while 1 out of 103 deaths results from car crashes, 1 out of 96 deaths now results from misuse of opioids! The following information comes from an article, “New Ways To Ease Pain” by Matthew Broderick in the January 2019 issue of Hartford Magazine. The Council of Economic Advisors estimated that in 2015 alone , the opioid epidemic cost $504 billion in lost productivity, health care expense and criminal jus-tice costs-not to mention the annual toll of human lives lost. As a result of such statistics health care providers, insurance companies and pharmaceutical manufactur-ers are starting to some up with non-narcotic alterna-tives for pain management. One such alternative-for use after surgery-is Exparel, a non-opioid single-dose anesthetic block being used to target the surgical area and provide pain relief for the first three days after sur-gery-the period when a patient would be most likely to need opioids. Studies have found that even short-term opioid exposure—as little as a one-day supply-can lead to long term use! It turns out that opioids are highly addictive because in addition to reducing pain-they work on the endorphin receptors in the brain to pro-duce a pleasurable “high”. I hope to provide further information on non-opioid pain relievers (whether pre-scription only, or over-the-counter) with pain-relieving effects on a par with opioids, but without the addictive effects of opioids, as soon as this information becomes available. Meanwhile, there is always acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin) for routine pain re-lief, or lidocaine (Xylocaine) for topical pain relief. One precaution! If you are uncertain what to take for pain, it might be advisable to consult a physician. For example, I’ve been advised to use acetaminophen for routine pain, not ibuprofen. Best Regards, John John’s Tip of the Month The University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter advises that cantaloupe is the most nutritious melon. One cup (cubed) or a six-ounce slice (without rind) supplies more than the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene. In fact, a serv-ing of cantaloupe contains nearly 5 milligrams of beta carotene and 68 milligrams of vitamin C-nearly the daily RDA.
