MUNICIPAL AGENT NOTES By John Sullivan

STROKE-KNOW THE TELL-TALE SIGNS

This information is based on an article by Edie Grossfield and a column by Dr. Eve Glazier, UCLA Health-both in the Journal Inquirer last November. A Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. One thing that all strokes have in common is the suden on-set of symptoms. These include: sudden numbness or weakness in arms, legs or face, particularly when it affects only one side of the body; trouble seeing or a loss of vision that affects one or both eyes; a sudden onset of confusion, dizziness, nausea, feeling faint, sweating; inability to speak or understand speech; the abrupt loss of coordination, bal-ance, or the ability to walk or move about; the instant onset of a massive headache. The American stroke Association (ASA) http://www.strokeassociation.org/STROKEORG/ and National Stroke Association (NSA) http://www.stroke.org/ websites offer good information about both types of stroke-ischemic (artery blockage) and hemorrhagic (blood vessel rupture)-what causes them and how they affect people. As strokes can happen at any age, it’s very important to raise awareness of them. Both the ASA and NSA promote the acronym F.A.S.T. It strands for the most common signs of a stroke: Facial droopiness, arm weakness, speech difficulty and time to call 911. But as we’ve listed above there are many more signs and symptoms of stroke So when someone is having a stroke, it’s vitally important to recognize this ASAP, and then dial 911. But as we’ve listed above there are many more signs and symptoms of stroke. So when someone is having a stroke, it’s vitally important to recog-nize this ASAP, and then dial 911. To quote Dr. Robert D. Brown, Jr, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Min-nesota, “The key is to treat as early as possible.”

Best regards, John John’s Tip of the Month The University of California Berkeley Wellness Letter ad-vises-choose bright and dark-colored fruits and vegetables. The color is generally a sign of extra nutrients. For instance, buy red grapes instead of green, bib lettuce, watercress and romaine lettuce (if declared safe) rather than iceberg lettuce, red cabbage instead of green and dark orange carrots over pale ones.
